Low-power, high-performance products for lower system power consumption overall
In the most common operating modes, the RL78 family delivers an operating current of 66 μA/MHz (while operating at
32 MHz) and a standby current of 0.57 μA (in Halt mode, with the RTC and LVD operating). Also, a newly developed
“Snooze” mode has been added to the previously implemented “Halt” and “Stop” low-power operation modes. In
Snooze mode the CPU is in the standby state while A/D conversion and serial communication are enabled, and the
CPU is activated only when required. This mode is excellent for battery-powered systems as it greatly increases the
battery life.

New “Snooze” mode for more power savings
In the new power-saving Snooze mode A/D conversion and serial communication can continue while the CPU is
stopped. When the microcontroller is in Stop mode (clock stopped), switching to Snooze mode makes it possible to
start the on-chip oscillator and use peripheral functions while keeping power consumption low.

A/D converter operation
Serial communication
A transition is made periodically to Snooze mode using an
internal timer, and A/D conversion and comparison of
conversion results are performed. This is ideal for monitoring
sensor input.
The ability to wait for receive data while the clock is stopped
(Stop mode) cuts power consumption. The clock starts
immediately when data is received and receive operation
takes place (Stop mode → Snooze mode). If reception ends
following a receive error, the state can return to Stop mode
(Snooze mode → Stop mode).

The RL78/G1x groups provide the standard functions of the RL78 family. The RL78/G13 group is the standard
configuration, the RL78/G12 group has low pin counts and smaller ROM capacity, and the RL78/G1A group is enhanced
for analog applications (12-bit A/D converter).

Ability to select among three display types for LCD applications
The RL78/F12 supports operations such as writing to and erasing the data flash and A/D conversion with a 1.8 V
power supply. This makes it ideal for applications such as keyless entry systems that operate at low voltage.
For heavy-duty LCD/AC power supply applications
Using resistance division to generate the drive voltage achieves high LCD
drive capacity at low cost. External resistors are used for voltage division
to generate the LCD drive voltage. The ability to input an external voltage
means that external resistors and capacitors can be used to adjust the
operating current and drive capacity.

This method uses the smallest operating current. The LCD display dims when
the battery voltage drops. It can be used without modification in cases where
the aim is to dim the display according to the remaining battery capacity. To
prevent the display from dimming as the battery voltage drops, the system

Want to start evaluating the RL78 right away? The Renesas Starter Kit
is just what you need. It brings together in a single package all the
development tools needed for microcontroller evaluation and initial
implementation. The control signals from the microcontroller are output
to the expansion board interface of the CPU board, allowing connection
to the target system under development for easy debugging.
This target board is for testing RL78 microcontroller applications
using the E1 on-chip debugging emulator (sold separately). It can
be used for testing at all stages of development, from software
development though actual system operation. All pins of the
microcontroller are assigned to peripheral port connectors, making
it possible to build evaluation circuits using commercially available
universal wiring boards.

There is also an Action Event function that displays the value of a variable or variables when program execution reaches a specified address. This
function allows convenient debugging, making it possible to access the variable name display function simply by right-clicking and without the need to
spend time on additional builds.
Useful visual feedback and ability to search
The ability to display variable values during program execution or
graphs like an oscilloscope makes it possible to develop programs
while performing monitoring of analog variations, as is necessary for
sensor applications and the like. You can display the ratios of
execution times among functions or a call graph to track down the
processing associated with high loads. This makes it possible to
improve overall system performance in a very efficient manner.
Other analysis functions include a source code display for functions
and variables, CSV output of information, and the ability to search
for all occurrences of specific definitions or declarations. These
capabilities simplify administration and management even when the
program structure is comparatively large-scale and complex.

Easy Updates
The powerful backup function allows saving and restoring of
complete projects and associated tool settings.
The update manager function of CubeSuite+ automatically checks on the
Internet for newer versions of the installed tools. This makes keeping up
to date easy.
