NOT ALL BATTERY CHARGERS
ARE CREATED EQUAL
When purchasing a charger to suit your battery, please note the battery manufacturer’s
recommendations for boost/absorption and float voltage requirements. These voltage
specifications have critical influence on the life of any battery.
Incorrect charging and over or under-charging significantly shortens battery life. Anecdotally
charging a battery consistently at only 0.5V above the recommended maximum will also shorten
battery cycle life by up to 40%.
Chargers should also be matched to the capacity of the relevant battery. Maximum battery life is
obtained by sizing chargers so that full recharge is possible within a period of 8-12 hours. A good
rule of thumb is to size your charger to at least 10% of the 20-hour Ah rating (ie – for a 100Ah
battery select a charger rated at 10-amps or more).
If you have selected a charger that is not recommended for use with any of these batteries, please
consult your charger’s manual and check that it is suitable for the application.
It is important to note that a battery charger which does not have multiple settings for boost/
absorption and float voltages cannot claim suitability across a variety of battery types and
technologies. Chargers that feature a setting for Gel, AGM and Flooded type batteries should
also provide some form of current limiting for best results. Charge ripple should be below +/30mV for longest battery life.
If you are selecting a charger for a generic or other brand battery, always refer to the
manufacturer’s recommended charging requirements. If no specifications can be found, please
refer to the typical charge requirements for each battery technology, as listed below:
