Energy-Saving Function

Initiates electric defrost heaters only as needed

Highly efficient valve eliminates need to maintain a high head pressure (head pressure control valve eliminated also) allowing a lower head pressure and condensing temperature.

A compressor operating at a lower condensing temperature yields higher capacity with less energy input.

A reverse cycle valve reverses the flow of high temperature refrigerant through evaporator coil, heating along its entire length and eliminating frost buildup. Results in up to an 80% decrease in defrost energy usage as well as a major reduction in defrost time.

LEDs use less electricity than fluorescent lights with electromagnetic ballasts and introduce less heat into the refrigerated space which reduces the workload on the refrigeration system’s compressor. The less the compressor operates, the more energy is saved. LEDs also last up to 50,000 hours.

Door open alarm prevents door from being left open. Optional light management system automatically turns off lights after a programmed interval.

The Glass Sentry II anti-sweat control module is designed to save energy by turning off glass door and frame heaters when no door heat is necessary.

Amount of torque and current required to start ECMs is low, making them more efficient. ECMs run cooler, reducing heat load to refrigerated space which makes the compressor run less.

Standard 4-inch panel with R-32 rating meets federal EISA requirements for freezers and surpasses R-25 requirements for coolers.

5" and 6" thick walk-in panels Thickness of panels produces a higher R-factor and energy efficiency which surpasses federal EISA requirements.

Low energy or energy free standard walk-in entry doors

V-series doors have a PVC thermal break between the door and frame which minimizes heat transfer between the refrigerated space and the outside. Cooler doors don't require anti-sweat heat and freezer doors only require a low wattage heater in the frame.

Scroll compressors

MRS & DRS series multi-compressor remote refrigeration systems

PS series multi-compressor parallel refrigeration systems

Up to 20% increase in efficiency vs. reciprocating compressors. Scrolls are also 50% more reliable than reciprocating types.

Since these systems are remote, the heat produced by multiple condensing units is removed from the kitchen or sales space reducing the air conditioning load and energy bill

Parallel units can match refrigeration capacity to actual load for a 20%+ savings over a single compressor unit.

WALK-IN SELECTION

CEILING AND WALL CLEARANCES

Please keep the following points in mind when determining space requirements for your walk-in.

When a ceiling mounted refrigeration system is used, the distance between the top of the walkin and the building ceiling should be at least the height of the condensing unit or housing plus

an additional two inches to allow proper air circulation. For easier maintenance and service access, allow two feet from the top of the refrigeration system housing to the building ceiling.

A minimum space of two inches must be allowed between the ceiling of the walk-in and the building ceiling to permit installation of the walk-in ceiling.

A minimum of two inches should be allowed between walk-in walls and building walls. The extra space compensates for irregularities in building construction and provides an air space which increases the walk-in's operation efficiency.

DOORS

MASTER-BILT'S UNIQUE ADJUSTABLE HINGE BACkING PLATE

A standard feature in all Master-Bilt walk-in doors, adjustable hinge backing plates are made of 1/4" thick steel enclosed within a 14 gauge steel housing. The plates are situated behind each hinge in a

Master-Bilt door and allow 3/8" adjustment of the door in any direction without removal of the door or its frame.

WHY INCLUDE THIS FEATURE?

We build in the adjustable hinge backing plates as a way to compensate for future door leveling. Before walk-in doors leave our factory, we make sure they are properly aligned. However, certain factors beyond our control can occur on the jobsite which may call for further adjustment. These include:

• Settling or unlevel surface

• Door placement change

• A need for more gasket seal at the bottom of the door

Remember, these factors can affect ANY door

from ANY manufacturer. With most manufacturers' doors, the only way to correct an unlevel door is to remove it with its frame, re-drill holes for the hinges and reinstall. But with Master-Bilt doors, adjustable hinge backing plates provide a very simple alternative. All you need to do is loosen the hinge bolts, shim the door to make it level and tighten the bolts back.

Adjustable hinge backing plates also extend the life of your door. By using the plates to keep doors level, you reduce wear on the door gasket, bottom wiper gasket and door hardware.

FLOORS AND CEILINGS

FLOORS

Master-Bilt has a tested design for every floor need, in both indoor and outdoor applications.

Any existing designs can be modified by our engineering department to meet your most exacting requirements.

The standard Master-Bilt floor is NSF-7-1997 listed with a .080 textured aluminum surface. This tough floor is also safer. Its raised textured pattern provides workers with better traction, thereby reducing the potential of “slip and fall” accidents

(even in wet conditions).

Master-Bilt also offers interior and exterior ramps for safe and easy transfer of carts from building floor to cooler/freezer floor. Rugged design of these ramps matches or exceeds the load bearing capacity of walk-in floors. A non-skid safety strip is a standard part of every ramp.

PROTECTIVE OUTDOOR ROOFS

Three roof packages are available for walk-ins: aluminum prefabricated, membrane and sloped

(galvalume).

The aluminum prefabricated roof is available in widths up to 24 ft. by length desired (some size limitations do apply). This durable option provides a waterproof covering for the ceiling panels and is designed for rapid, accurate field assembly.

The membrane roof is designed for the exact walk-in roof surface desired (a maximum of 2400 actual square feet surface area) with no welding of seams required for installation. Some size limitations do apply.

The sloped, or galvalume, roof is available for 25-100 ft. widths by length desired

(some size limitations do apply). These roofs are constructed of a minimum 26 gauge galvalume. The package comes with all necessary fasteners, graduate spacer purlins, galvalume decking, end closures, ridge caps and ridge vents for fast assembly.

Indoor ceilings are either self-support or suspended.

MASTER CONTROLLER REVERSE CYCLE DEFROST SYSTEM

COLD CONTROLLED

The Master Controller Reverse Cycle Defrost

(MCRCD) system is an electronic controller for

Master-Bilt walk-in cooler and freezer refrigeration systems. Its patented design saves up to 27% more energy than an all-mechanical system.

The MCRCD system is highly efficient since it regulates an electric expansion valve in response to evaporator superheat and return air temperature. Additionally, integrated Reverse

Cycle Defrost (see p.

9.12) completely re-

The MCRCD system interface is mounted to an evaporator coil.

moves frost build-up in coils and works much faster than electric defrost heaters. Standard

Demand Defrost technology initiates reverse cycle defrosts only as needed, allowing further energy savings.

In addition to energy savings, the MCRCD system is designed to reduce installation labor and material costs:

• All electrical components are factory pre-wired and tested

• No line voltage is required between evaporator coils and condensing units (two pairs of low voltage wires, typically thermostat cables, are required to operate the Reverse Cycle Defrost valve and the compressor relay at the condensing unit)

• The walk-in doesn’t have to be at operating temperature to confirm or set superheat (preprogrammed)

• No need to install a thermostat and solenoid or set a defrost schedule

37

In some cases, the savings on wiring installation alone covers the cost of the MCRCD.

DEMAND DEFROST

Demand defrost is a more efficient alternative to mechanical defrost timers. With most mechanicallybased low temp refrigeration systems, electric heaters installed on evaporator coils are used to melt accumulated frost. The heaters are pre-set to engage at certain times of the day regardless of the amount of frost build-up on the coil.

Conversely, demand defrost constantly checks for the buildup of ice on an evaporator coil to determine if defrosting is required. If a defrost is needed, the standard Reverse Cycle Defrost method is initiated.

WEB2WALK-IN

Web2Walk-In is an internet-based program which provides complete access to the MCRCD system from anywhere on the globe. Through this interface, users can remotely monitor and program all data and setpoints either through wireless internet or cabled (cat 5) connection. There’s even an Android ™ app for smartphones. With Web2Walk-In, there’s no need for a service tech to climb onto a roof or enter the walk-in to monitor or adjust the refrigeration system. Plus, constant access to data allows users to improve refrigeration system performance and avoid service issues.

Web2Walk-In gives users constant access to refrigeration system performance data. This internetbased program can be accessed almost anywhere by computer or Android ™ based smartphone.

OPTIONS AND ACCESSORIES

REVERSE CYCLE DEFROST

Increase defrost efficiency with Master-Bilt’s patented* Reverse Cycle Defrost method. When the

Master Controller’s Demand Defrost determines a defrost is necessary, a reverse cycle valve installed on the refrigeration system’s condensing unit is activated and high temperature refrigerant flow is reversed. The refrigerant flows back through the evaporator coil heating it along its entire length, completely eliminating frost build-up.

In comparison, only a certain amount of the coil is heated by electric defrost heaters, leaving ice deposits which weaken the evaporator’s performance.

Reverse cycle technology offers several significant advantages. First of all, the process uses less energy than electric defrost heaters. Reverse cycle

reduces defrost energy usage by up to 80%.

This savings plus that gained from the demand defrost feature and elimination of head pressure control valves dramatically reduces electrical bills.

Reverse cycle eliminates not only the need for defrost heaters and head pressure control valves, but also check valves and expansion valves at the condenser. With reverse cycle, liquid receivers are also unneeded on most condensing units. Removing these components decreases the cost of the evaporator itself and saves on installation and wiring.

Defrost time is also greatly shortened. The average defrost time for a freezer with electric heaters is 20 to 30 minutes. Reverse cycle can perform a completely “clean” defrost in as little as 3 to

5 min-utes in a freezer or 1 1 /

2 to 2 minutes in a cooler. Because the defrost is so rapid, there’s no noticeable increase in freezer temperature and product temperature rise is also significantly less.

B-SERIES CONDENSING UNITS

Master-Bilt offers one of the most complete condensing units in the built-up B-Series. These units are completely factory assembled on a galvanized steel base. Accessories are pre-wired and mounted, resulting in minimal field installation time. All that is required is electrical hookup, piping, connection, evacuation, leak testing and charging to become operational. Master-

Bilt’s B-Series systems, available with hermetic, semi-hermetic or compliant scroll compressors, range from 3 to 40 H.P.

M-SERIES CONDENSING UNITS

Master-Bilt’s M-Series is very similar to the B-Series in components and options. However, M-Series models are specially designed to function in high temperature environments.

As with the B-Series, components are pre-wired and factory mounted. Package options on the basic standard remote unit include a factory precharged system with quick-connect liquid and suction line sets up to 50 ft.

M-Series units are available in hermetic, compliant scroll and semi-hermetic compressor models, with or without matching evaporator coils. They are factory assembled on a galvanized steel angle leg base and range from 1 /

2

to 6 H.P.

E-SERIES EVAPORATORS

Both B- and M-Series condensing units can be provided with a matching evaporator coil for a complete remote refrigeration system.

E-Series evaporator coils are ready to mount in position and are available in either air (off cycle) or electric defrost. Each is also furnished standard with

MRS SERIES MODULAR MULTI-

COMPRESSOR REFRIGERATION

SYSTEMS

Remoting the refrigeration systems in equipment such as reach-ins, walk-ins and ice machines to a single MRS system removes the heat produced by multiple refrigeration units inside a kitchen or store and reduces air conditioning loads and energy bills. The MRS system, typically roofmounted, also reduces noise level, service calls and extends the life of equipment.

Modular design sets the MRS series apart.

Each system is composed of individual modules containing a condenser, compressor, generously-sized receiver and other appropriate components all enclosed within a single housing. This modularity maximizes configuration flexibility, simplifies service and provides for future expandibility.

Factory pre-wired to an electrical panel for one-point connection, MRS systems are designed to be easily installed.

The modular condensers are rated at 110°F to withstand high temperatures. Each module also contains head pressure controls and crankcase heaters for low ambient protection.

Other benefits include pre-piping to an internal pitch pocket to decrease water leakage from roofs.

MRS systems can also be equipped with the optional Master Controller Reverse Cycle Defrost electronic control system.

DRS SERIES DUAL

COMPRESSOR SYSTEMS

When your requirements call for two-compressor unit, the DRS series is the answer. An economical complement to the MRS series, DRS models share many of the same quality construction features as well as the same range of applications.

DRS systems feature:

• Compressors that use a separate refrigerant circuit providing independent function of each system

• Scroll compressors for freezer applications up to

5 HP

• Hermetic compressors for cooler applications up to 3 HP

• Common base and frame assembly

• Standard galvanized finish with optional stainless steel finish

The Master Controller Reverse Cycle Defrost system is also an option on the DRS series.

REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS

PS SERIES MULTI-COMPRESSOR

PARALLEL REFRIGERATION

SYSTEMS

Master-Bilt's PS series systems use scroll compressors for the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly system. PS series units, matched to an appropriate condenser, are modular and allow you to add or change compressors as needed.

The standard rack housing and frame is made of durable galvanized steel with stainless steel as an option. Other options include the Master Controller Reverse Cycle Defrost electronic control system.

A few PS series features:

• Parallel units match refrigeration capacity to actual load. This amounts to a 20%+ savings over a single compressor unit.

• The lead compressor is a digital scroll which better matches capacity needs and provides a 3% energy saving over standard parallel units

• The PS series electronic controller unit can interface into existing building controls

• Remote communications are possible

• Built-in alarm features

• A diagnostic feature that reports temperatures, pressures and failure alarms as well as trending of these readings that can be used to predict maintenance needs

PS series parallel systems are matched with an appropriate condenser section and can be located indoors or out.

12E. OPTIONAL MASTER CONTROLLER

REVERSE CYCLE DEFROST SYSTEM

The refrigeration system of a walk-in cooler or freezer may be equipped with a Master Controller

Reverse Cycle Defrost (MCRCD) electronic control system (U.S. patent no. 7,073,344) mounted to the refrigeration system. The MCRCD system is custom-designed for Master-Bilt walk-in coolers and freezers to control an electric expansion valve in response to evaporator superheat and return air temperature. The Master Controller is part of a Master-Bilt refrigeration system which includes either a remote condensing unit (B-series or Mseries) or a multi-compressor system (MRS, DRS or

PS series) and one or more evaporator coils. A reverse cycle valve is also mounted to the condensing unit (this valve is not required when Master

Controller Reverse Cycle Defrost is utilized with PS series parallel racks).

Remote communication with the Master Controller system will be provided through an internet-based program. Through this interface, users

SPECIFICATIONS will be able to remotely monitor and program all data and setpoints either through wireless internet or cabled (cat 5) connection.

No line voltage connections will be required between evaporator coils and condensing units.

Two circuits of low voltage wiring will be required from terminals in the evaporator coil to terminals in the electrical panel or enclosure at the condensing unit or rack. Standard five wire thermostat cable is a permissible product for this provision.

Voltage for the evaporator may be pulled from the condenser when evaporator is 220/60/1.

Additionally, a refrigeration system containing a Master Controller will consist of the following factory-mounted parts:

• Digital control board mounted to an evaporator coil

• Electric expansion valve

• Reverse cycle valve

• 24VAC transformer

• Three solid state temperature sensors

• External relay to control the liquid line solenoid valve or compressor contactor

• Pressure transducer

The Master Controller board will contain four output relays: defrost heater (20A), evaporator fan

(10A), alarm (3A) and liquid line solenoid (compressor) (3A). It will be possible to configure this

Master Controller system in a peer-to-peer application for up to a total of 6 evaporator controllers.

Reverse cycle defrost will be the default method for MCRCD systems on walk-in coolers and freezers.

Reverse cycle defrost will be accomplished by means of a reversing valve installed on the refrigeration system's condensing unit. This valve will reverse the direction of high temperature refrigerant through the length of the evaporator coil to remove ice buildup.

The MCRCD system will also be equipped with demand defrost technology which will constantly monitor an evaporator coil for ice buildup before initiating a reverse cycle defrost.

The room temperature range will be -40°F to

75°F. Medium temperature application is pre-set at 35°F cut-out room temperature with scheduled defrost. Low temperature application is pre-set at -10°F cut-out room temperature with demand defrost. The cut-in temperature differential is 5°F by default. These set points can be field set at the job site if different settings are desired.

12F. PRS-2 SERIES PACKAGED

Master-Bilt and the Federal Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007

Listed below are the requirements of the Federal Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 and a short explanation of how Master-Bilt is embracing these energy saving initiatives.

Requirement

“...automatic door closers that firmly close all walk-in doors that have been closed to within 1 inch of full closure, except that this subparagraph shall not apply to doors wider than 3 feet 9 inches or taller than 7 feet...”

“have strip doors, spring hinged doors, or other method of minimizing infiltration when the doors are open...”

Master-Bilt Response

Master-Bilt walk-ins have standard spring-loaded hinges and door closers that will close the door fully if the door is within one inch of the closed position.

“...contain wall, ceiling, and door insulation of at least R-25 for coolers and R-32 for freezers, except that this subparagraph shall not apply to glazed portions of doors or to structural members...”

“...contain floor insulation of at least R-28 for freezers...”

Master-Bilt walk-ins have standard spring-loaded hinges and door closers that close the door fully if the door is within one inch of the closed position or if the door is inadvertently left open.

Master-Bilt offers walk-in panels in standard four-inch thickness with optional five- and six-inch thicknesses. The four-inch panel has an R-value of 32, the five-inch has an

R-value of 40, and the six-inch has an R-value of 48. Additionally, Master-Bilt is one of the only manufacturers to offer a six-inch ceiling panel of up to 23 feet in length with no additional support needed.

Master-Bilt floor panels meet this insulation requirement. For

“floorless” applications, the slab is required to be insulated to R-28.

Master-Bilt evaporator motors of less than one horsepower use electronically commutated motors to be compliant with the new law.

Master-Bilt condenser motors of less than one horsepower are permanent split capacitor (PSC) type which is compliant.

“...for evaporator fan motors of under 1 horsepower and less than 460 volts, use - (i) electronically commutated motors

(brushless direct current motors); or (ii) 3-phase motors...”

“...for condenser fan motors of under 1 horsepower, use –

(i) electronically commutated motors; (ii) permanent split capacitor-type motors; or (iii) 3-phase motors...”

“...for all interior lights, use light sources with an efficacy of 40 lumens per watt or more, including ballast losses (if any), except that light sources with an efficacy of 40 lumens per watt or less, including ballast losses (if any), may be used in conjunction with a timer or device that turns off the lights with 15 minutes of when the walk-in cooler or walk-in freezer in not occupied by people...”

“Transparent reach-in doors for walk-in freezers and windows in walk-in freezer doors shall be of triple-pane glass with either heat-reflective treated glass or gas fill”

“Transparent reach-in doors for walk-in coolers and windows in walk-in cooler doors shall be – (i) double-pane glass with heat-reflective treated glass and gas fill; or (ii) triple-pane glass with either heat-reflective treated glass or gas fill”

Master-Bilt’s four-foot T5 fluorescent ceiling fixture and compact fluorescent bulb for the vapor proof door fixture exceed efficacy of 40 lumens per watt. Additionally, Master-Bilt’s optional MBWA Digital Walk-in Alarm and Light Management System can be programmed to turn off the lights after

15 minutes.
