The Baldor Super-E®
In the mid-70s, a southeastern tire manufacturing plant
in the U.S. asked Baldor to increase their plant’s
operating efficiencies. After analyzing the efficiencies of
the plant’s 55 kW motors, Baldor engineers determined
that considerable energy savings could be gained from
a motor design focused on “active materials.” By adding
more copper to the windings, upgrading the laminations
to a premium-grade steel, designing precision air gaps
between the rotor and stator, and reducing fan and
other losses in the motor, Baldor was able to supply the
plant with the premium efficient motors it needed. This
was the birth of the Baldor Super-E.

Leadership in Premium Efficiency
Over 600 Stock Motor Ratings
Called a “key breakthrough” by the Consortium for
Energy Efficiency, the CEE in 1998 recognized Baldor’s
Super-E as the first premium efficient motor line to meet
their stringent efficiency criteria, citing “For the first time,
one manufacturer will carry all qualifying products.”
Today’s line of Baldor Super-E motors offers customers
some from the highest levels of efficiencies, in ratings of
.75 to 1500 kWr. Baldor has over 600 ratings available
immediately from stock, with non-stock motors
delivered in just 10 working days. All Super-E motors
(except Explosion-Proof) are also “Inverter-Ready”.
As countries and regions across the world establish
minimum efficiency levels for motors, more companies
are turning to the Baldor Super-E. This includes plant
and processing applications, as well as OEM products
for shipment overseas. Super-E motors exceed the
efficiency levels defined by EPAct in the U.S., NRC in

Super-E Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC, IP54, IP55)
and Open Drip Proof (ODP, IP23) are reliable motors
that have kept plants operating efficiently since their
introduction in 1983. Explosion-Proof, Close Coupled
Pump and Automotive Approved Super-E’s deliver
premium efficiency for special duty applications.
How is Energy Efficiency Rated?
Did you know that a motor’s nameplate may be marked
with two different efficiency numbers – “nominal” or
“minimum” full load efficiencies and that the efficiency
value marked on the motor’s nameplate are not the
same around the world.
In applications requiring added protection from
corrosion caused by severe environmental operating
conditions, Baldor Super-E Chemical Processing motors
are available in TEFC ratings from 1 through 900 hp.
Cast-iron construction, two-part epoxy zinc chromate
primer inside and out, gaskets on all joints and many
other features provide added protection where and
when you need it most.
In the United States, when motor efficiency is
measured, certain inherent motor losses are also
included in the efficiency number. These losses include
stator core losses, stray load losses, friction and
windage losses. In other test method standards, these
motor losses may not be counted in the efficiency
figures for their motors. For example, IEC test
standards, exact stray losses are not measured. These
losses are calculated into the efficiency ratings based
on an assumed percentage per motor’s kW rating. In
other countries, the efficiency rating does not even have
the stray load losses factored into the efficiency rating.
When a user is concerned about energy efficiency, the
consumer must be careful in the comparison of motors.
For the ultimate in protection from severe environments
– where you need added insurance against downtime –
Baldor offers IEEE 841 motors. Delivering reliable,
rugged performance with the industry’s highest energy
efficiencies, these motors exceed IEEE 841 - 1994
standards for severe duty TEFC induction motors.
Inpro/Seal® bearing isolators at both the drive end and
fan end. Baldor IEEE 841 motors are available
immediately off the shelf, in .75 – 185 kW ratings, with
special designs available in just 2 weeks.

Standard on All Baldor Motors: Exxon Polyrex® EM Polyurea Grease
It’s a fact: Bearing failure is the #1 mechanical reason for motor failure. So the better the grease
protecting those bearings, the better and longer the motor performs.
Today, that better grease is Exxon’s new Polyrex® EM polyurea grease – now standard on all
Baldor motors. It provides lubrication life of more than four times greater than other polyurea
greases in tests up to 350°F. It exhibits greater durability when subjected to mechanical shearing
forces. Furthermore, a specially formulated additive in the grease resists washout, rust and
corrosion even when subjected to salt water conditions.

EU Electric Motor Efficiency Standards
Instead of requiring a minimum efficiency standard, the European Union elected to establish a
rating system for motor efficiency. By definition, electric motors of standard design are assigned to
an efficiency classification.
The concept of classing efficiencies is envisioned as a simple way for consumers to determine
which motor best fits their application in terms of energy efficiency. Motors used occasionally
might be selected from a lower efficiency group whereas, motors in continuous use would warrant
selection from a higher efficiency group.
The three classifications can be thought of as efficiency ratings that are higher than the average,
within the average and below the average efficiency rating. These bands are called EFF1, EFF2
and EFF3 respectively. (The equivalent North American efficiency classifications would be premium
efficiency, EPAct efficiency and standard efficiency.)
The EU motor manufacturers are putting their motor’s efficiency class rating on the motor label or
nameplate. The EU encourages users to purchase motors from the average or higher efficiency
classifications rather than the lower efficiency classification. The use of these logos – EFF1, 2, and
3 – is licensed through a contractual agreement with CEMEP (European Committee of
Manufacturers of Electrical Machines and Power Electronics). This agreement binds the
manufacturer to reducing (and eventually eliminating) the quantity of Eff 3 machines and increasing
the quantity of Eff1 and 2 machines.
Which motors are covered by the efficiency classifications?
• general purpose, totally enclosed fan ventilated (TEFC) three phase squirrel cage induction
motors either 2 or 4 poles only
• with an output range between 1.1 to 90 kW (1.5 to 120 Hp)
• and rated at 400V, 50 Hz, S1 Duty (continuous duty)
What are the efficiency classification rating’s data points?
The following table and chart illustrate the efficiency-banding concept. The EFF1 band contains
the highest efficiency ratings. EFF2 contains average ratings and EFF3 has below average ratings.
The EFF1 efficiency ratings for the 4-pole motor are slightly higher than the ratings of 2-pole
motor. The EFF2 and EFF3 classifications have the same efficiency ratings for both the 2-pole
and the 4-pole motor.
Definitions of standard design motors, efficiency ratings and outputs:
• A standard design is a Design N motor. See EN 600 34-12 and HD 231.
• Motor efficiencies are measured according to IEC 60034-2 (1972) + Amendment 1 (1995) +
Amendment 2 (1996) standards, and are reflected in the efficiency rating values in this brochure.
• Power output is defined by IEC 34

UL, IEC AND CSA EXPLOSION-PROOF CLASSIFICATIONS
1. Hazardous Locations
Class I Group D locations are atmospheres containing elements such as Gasoline, Hexane, Naphtha, Benzine, Butane, Propane, Alcohol,
Acetone, Benzol, Lacquer Solvent Vapors or Natural Gas.
Class I Group C locations are atmospheres containing elements such as Ethyl-ether, Ethylene and Cyclopropane.
Class II Group F & G locations are atmospheres containing dust such as (F) Carbon Black, coal or Coke Dust, (G) Flour, Starch or Grain Dusts.
Class I, Zone 1/2/3, IIC locations are atmospheres containing acetylene and hydrogen
Class I, Zone 1/2/3, IIB locations are atmospheres containing ethylene
Class I, Zone 1/2/3, IIA locations are atmospheres containing propane
2. As required by Underwriters Laboratories and Canadian Standards Association, explosion-proof motors with Class II Group
F & G approvals must have over temperature protection.
Explosion-Proof Motors rated 1.1 kW or less have internally mounted automatic thermal overloads when indicated by suffix
“A”. Caution must be observed when applying these to machinery applications to prevent accidental injury should the thermal device
automatically reset and restart the motor.
Explosion-Proof Motors rated .75 kW and larger without automatic thermal overloads have thermostats in the windings. These
thermostats are pilot circuit devices to be connected to the magnetic starter circuit.
3. Surface temperatures of Baldor Explosion-Proof Motors will not exceed the following UL and CSA maximums under fault conditions.
A.Class I, Group D listings only.

Motors with Class B insulation will not exceed surface temperatures of 230°C (446°F) equivalent Code T2C.
Y
Motors with Class F insulation and 1.0 S.F. will not exceed surface temperatures of 280°C (536°F) equivalent to Code T2A.

4. Not suitable for applications in temperatures below -25°C (-13°F).
5. All Explosion-Proof motors are supplied with Explosion-Proof UL and CSA approved conduit boxes as standard.
6. Baldor AC Induction Explosion Proof Motors are not approved for use on variable voltage or variable frequency controls
(Inverter or Vector Drives). Contact local Baldor office for explosion-proof motors used on variable voltage or variable frequency controls.
CAUTION: Motors misapplied in hazardous environments can cause a fire or explosion resulting in destruction of property, serious injury
or death. Only the end user or a qualified underwriter is to identify and select the proper class, group, division, and temperature code
motor to meet the requirements of each installation. Baldor personnel can advise what listings and approvals Baldor motors carry, but
