It is important that the temperature be within the stain manufacturer’s recommendations. 1. Place the door flat on padded saw horses or other supports. 2. Trim or scrape any factory sealant that has seeped out from seams or window trim. 3. Mask off any areas not to be stained, including glass and the door jamb. 4. Wipe the door thoroughly with a cleaning solvent, mineral spirits or an all purpose cleaner and allow to dry. 2. “Pull” the stain with a clean lint-free rag or cheese cloth by gently rubbing with varying pressures in the direction of the grain. This will help accentuate the grain pattern in the door or component. 3. While the stain is still wet, gently go over the doors with the 3” bristle brush to remove any streaks or lap marks. The brush can be dabbed in corners and crevices where there is heavy stain accumulation. Keep the brush clean during this process by using a rag to remove stain from the bristles. 4. As recommended, the first stain application should be applied in a light coat. If a darker colour is desired, wait a minimum of 8-12 hours for the stain to dry before applying a second coat. 5 STAINING Stir the stain thoroughly to ensure proper product colour and consistency. It may be beneficial to practice staining a small area of the door. This will allow familiarity with the process and ensure shade and colour accuracy. The practice area can be cleaned with solvent prior to staining the door. For best results, adhere to the following steps: 1 3 2 3 1 1 2 1 Paint/Stain Panel Order 1. Raised panel areas 4 1. Using a 3” bristle brush, apply the varnish in the direction of the grain in the same panel sequence as used in the stain application. NORMAL MAINTENANCE By exposure and weathering from sun, moisture and air pollutants, a well finished exterior fiberglass door will be affected. Normal maintenance is to reapply the topcoat approximately every two years. 2. A minimum of 2 coats is recommended, allowing 6 hours drying time between coats. Brushes can be kept clean with solvent or mineral spirits.
