NEWS & INFORMATION
By way of introduction, my name is Michael Hinojosa. I am proud
to serve as Dallas ISD superintendent. Dallas is my home. I am a
graduate of Sunset High School, started my career in education
as a teacher and coach at W.H. Adamson High School, and have
two sons who graduated from Hillcrest High School. I served an
initial term as superintendent in Dallas ISD from 2005–2011, and
returned as interim superintendent in July 2015.
In October 2015, the Board of Trustees formally approved my
return to the district as superintendent.
As someone who has experienced our schools as a student,
parent, and leader, I know how much the hard work and
dedication of the staff and community have helped Dallas ISD
students, and your efforts are both appreciated and admired.
Dallas ISD has set high expectations for our schools and put a
number of initiatives in place with the goal of preparing every
student for college and the workforce. We will continue to
uphold those high expectations and implement the key initiatives
already underway, including the Teacher Excellence Initiative,
more Public School Choice opportunities, and expanded Early
Childhood and Career and Technical Education programs, all of
which are in the best interest of our students.
I look forward to working with you to help all Dallas ISD students
and staff members succeed in every way.
Michael Hinojosa, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
About Dallas ISD
CORE BELIEFS
WHO WE ARE
Our main purpose is to improve student
academic achievement.
The Dallas Independent School District sits in the
heart of a large, diverse and dynamic region with a
metropolitan population of 6.5 million people in the 12
counties in North Central Texas. Dallas ISD comprises
384 square miles and encompasses the cities of Dallas,
Cockrell Hill, Seagoville, Addison, Wilmer and parts of
Carrollton, Cedar Hill, DeSoto, Duncanville, Farmers
Branch, Garland, Grand Prairie, Highland Park, Hutchins,
Lancaster and Mesquite. The district is the secondlargest public school district in the state, and the 14thlargest district in the nation.
Effective instruction makes
the most difference in student
academic performance.
There is no excuse for poor
quality instruction.
With our help, at-risk students will
achieve at the same rate as non–atrisk students.
Staff members must have a commitment
to children and a commitment to the
pursuit of excellence.
We are proud of our award-winning schools, outstanding
teachers and staff, hard-working students and committed
parents and volunteers. The school district serves
approximately 160,000 students in pre-kindergarten
through the 12th grade, in 227 schools, employing nearly
20,000 dedicated professionals.
Dallas ISD has seen continual gains in student
achievement, and strives to help ensure the success of
every student. Upon graduation, more district graduates
are college and career ready, primed to be productive,
contributing members to the community.

Weather-related school closing /
Suspensión de clases por mal tiempo
In inclement weather, a decision to close schools is determined
no later than 6 a.m. on the day in question. The district will not
hold school if buses cannot operate safely; if electric service
at schools is disrupted; or if natural gas to schools is curtailed.
However, once school has opened, classes are held for the entire
school day.
