CAPS: Five-way protection system
Cambndge Audio nas developed a proprietary protection system to ensure reliability
and long life of its amplifiers. This protection system comprises five main protection
methods:
1. DC detection *
Indicator - Unit has swttched off durmg
in Single bursts.

Description - CAP5 offers loudspeaker protectiOn if the output of the amplifrer goes to
a htgh constanl voltage (OC) . Ttus tS a rare fault. althougt1 detecting it could just save
those ell.pensive loudspeakers.
Remedy
Due to the necessar~· sensttivtty of the DC protectton ctrcui t,
hard cl1ppmg of the ampli fte r may cause DC protection to be triggered.
It this fau lt occurs please swttch the unit off, power up again and check ol)eration
wtth a reduced 'iOiurne leveL If the DC fault occurs agau) please contact your Jeater
tor servrce.
2 . Over temperature detection**
Indicator - Un1t has SWitChed off durmg operation, protection LED constantly flashes

Description - CAP5 mcludes tempe1ature datect1on wh1ch constantly monitors the
11eat generated b) the output transrstors. If the monitored temperature reaches a high
levttl (suitably with1n the lim1ts of tne output dev1ces1 the cunphfier will automat1caUy
sw1tch 1nto a fault mode. If the loudo.peaker impedance IS lOw, the temperature of the
drnplifier may rise faster as the amplif1er rs wori<rng harder. II the amplifier is rnountt.>(i
ill a cabmet or the ventilation slots ore obstructed, the o-.er-temperature detection may
actrvate/ reacuvate after a short listenmg time.
Remedy - The unit IS not damaged. altt10ugh

(Safe Operating Area • SOA) arbeiten. Der SOA ist ein Grenzwertsatz,

ab und der Verstarker Oberhitzt. CAP5 wird diese Situation erkennen.
Wenn die Anzeige bei nur einem angeschlossenen lautsprecherpaar
gleich bleibt. kann in einem oder beiden ein Oefekt vorliegen.

ensure rellab1hty. V/ l also protects the amplifier against short-circuits on the speaker
termmals durrng use.

on the loudspeaker terminals to see if a short across the terminals has
been accrdentally rntroducad. If the resistance measured across the loudspeaker
termmals rs too low. the unit wrll remain in Standby mode wml the fault has been
removed and power up is re-attempted
Remedy - User.rel.;lted fault. Tnare may be a slwrt-circuit between the lotJdspeaker
h:rtnrnals. Chec" allloudspea..,er connections before attemptmg to swttcl'l tile urut ou t
of Standby.
5. Intelligent clipping detection *
Indicator · CltiJprng LED wrlf flash if the audio output is at/above the clipping level.

pourraient leur etre fatals.
Remtde - En raison de la sensibiltte necessaire du circuit de protection
CC. l'ticretage dur de l'aml>'ificateur peut entrainer le dCclenchement
de Ia protection CC. Si cette panne survient. Cteignez l'appereil, puis
remettez·le sous tension et verifiez le fonctionnement un volume reduil
Si Ia panne de courant continu se reprodult, contactez votre revendeur
en vue d'une reparation.

mode de panne. Si nmp8dance des enceintes est taible, Ia temperature
de l'amplificateur peut augmenter ~us rapidement du fait que
l'amplificateur est davantage sollicite. Si l'amplificateur est instaue dens
un meuble ferme ou si les fentes d'aeraticm sont obstruees, Ia detection
de surchauffe peut s·activer;se reactiver apres un court temps <1'6coute.
Remede - L'appareil n'est pas endommage, mais vous devez le laisser
refroidir pendant 15 minutes avant de quitter le mode veille.

Abhllfe - Das Gerat ist nicht beSct1iJdrgt. es sollte 1edoch mindestens 15 Mlmrten
lang ausgeschaltet bleiben, um ausreichend abzukOhlen. bevor es aus dem Standby
a~rsgeschall~t wrrd.
3. Uberspannungs-/Oberstromerkennung * <*·*
Anzetge - Das GerSt schaltet sich wahrend des Betriebs aus. Die Schutz·LEO
blinht stetig dreimal auf.

Remitde - Panne due l'utilisateur. II est possible qu'un court-circuit se soit
produit ent1e les bornes des encelntes. Vt!riflez tousles raccordements des
enceintes avant d'essayer de quitter le mode veille.
Remitae - L'amplificateur est utilise hors de son enveloppe de
performances. RE!dulsez le volume. Verlflez egalement sl un court-circuit
ou court-circuit partie! s'est produit entre les bornes des enceintes.
Remarque : si l'indication reste Ia meme et que plusieurs enceintes sont
utilis6es su1 cheque sortie d'enceinte, retirez une paire puis reesseyez.
Si un trop grand nombre d'enceintes sont connectees un amptificateur,
falsant cnuter trop bas Ia resistance de charge, l'amplificateur sera
sature. le systeme CAPS detectera cette situation. Si l'in<lication reste Ia
meme avec une seule paire d'enceintes connect6es, l'une ou/et I' autre
des enceintes prt!sente(nt) peut.atre un probteme.

4. Detection de court-circuit****
TemDin - lorsque !'apparel tente de sortir du mode veille, le temoin
lumineux de protection clignote. quatre illuminations Ia fois.

Description - Lors de Ia mise sous tension
partir du mode veille. le
systeme CAPS effectue une verification sur les barnes des enceintes pour
voir si un court-circuit a ete acci<lentellement lntro<lult. Si Ia resistance
mesuree entre les bornes des enceintes est uop faible,l'appareil restera
en mode veille jusqu·a ce que le <18faut ait ete supprim6 et qu·une
nouvelle tentative de mise sous tension ait eu lieu.
Oeacripcl6n - CAPS incluye detecciOn de Ia temperatura, que monitoriza
constantemente el calor gerrerado por los transistores de salida. Si Ia
temperatura monitorizada alcanza un nivel elevado (dentro de los limltes de
los dispositivos de salida), el amplificador se pondui automtiticamente en

SoluciOn - Ia unidad no esta daflada. aunque debe dejarse que se enfrie
durante lS minutos antes de sallr del modo de reposo.

3. Deteccl6n de sobretensl6njsobrelntensldad
lndlcador: - Ia unidad se ha desactivado durante su funcionamiento, el lED
de protecci6n parpadea constantemente en r8fagas de tres.
De•crlpciOn- CAPS ofrece protecci6n V/1 monitorizando contlnuamente los
transistores de salida para que funclonen dentro de su area operativa de
seguridad (SOA). El SOA es una serle de Ifmites indlcados por el fabricante
del transistor de salida para garantizar su fiabllidad. V/1 tembltin prote'e al
amplifica<lor trente a cortocircuitos en los termlnales de altavoces durante
su uso.
Soluci6n: - el ampliticador se est8 usando fuera de su margen de
funcionamiento. Reduzca el volumen. Compruebe tambien si hay alglin
cortocircuito total o parcial entre los terminates de altevoces.
Nota; Si 18 indiceci6n se mantiene igual y se utilizen varios alt8\loces en ceda
salida de altavoces, desconecte una pareja y vuelva a intentarlo. Si hay
demasia<los altavoces conecta<los a un ampllficador, lo que provoca que Ia
resistencia de carga sea demasiado baja, el aml>'fflcador podria saturarse.
CAPS detectara esta situaci6n. Si Ia indicaci6n permanece igual con una
sola pareja de alta'o'Oces conectados. puede haber un fallo en uno o los dos
altavoces.
4. Detecclon de cortoclrcultos ****
lndlcador: - mientras Ia unidad intenta salir del modo de reposo. el LEO de
protecci6n parpadea en r3fagas de cuatro.
DeKrlpciOn: - al sacar Ia unidad del modo de reposo, CAPS realiza una
comprobaci6n de los terminales de altavoces para comprobar si se
ha producido por accidente un cortocircuito entre los terminales. Si Ia
resistencia medida entre los terminates de altavoces es demasiado baja, Ia
unidad permanecera en el modo de reposo hasta que se haya solucionado
el fallo y vuelva a lntentarse encenderla .
SOIUCI6n: - fallo relacionado con el usuario. Puede haber un cortocircuito
entre los terminates de altavoces. Compruebe todas las conexiones de
altavoces antes de intentar sacar Ia unidad del modo de reposo.
