• Backup time is directly related to load. If you know the load, you can calculate
expected backup time by:
(Volts * Battery Capacity in Ah) / Load in Watts
• We typically de-rate battery capacity by 50% because battery capacity
decreases in cold weather. To de-rate, we divide the battery capacity in Ah
by 2
• So if you have a 24V device with 8W power draw (a Typical Canopy Unit)
and you have 36Ah of battery capacity:
(24V * (36Ah/2) ) / 8W = 54 hours backup time
•Our systems are designed to fully charge in about 4 hours after a power outage.

5+ Questions When Specifying the
RemotePro™ Power System
1. What is the average power requirements in Watts for each piece of
equipment?
2. What operating voltages are required by each piece of equipment?
Are voltages supplied via POE or other?
3. How many hours per day does the equipment run?
4. How many extra hours of backup power do you require?
5. What are the worst case average peak sun hours at your installation
site?
6. If considering a wind turbine, what is the average wind speed at the
site?
Tech Notes: Peak Sun Hours
• Peak sun hours per day is the number of
hours per day with solar irradiation > 1000
Wh/m2
•Peak Sun Hours = Total Irradiation [Wh/m2] /
1000 = Peak Sun hours:
Example: If during the day we have 4 hours at
500 Wh/m2 and 6 hours at 250 Wh/m2 we
should compute the peak sun hours per day as
follows:
First, multiply 4hs x 500 W/m2 and add to it 6hs
x 250 W/m2 – This will equal 3500 Wh/m2
Second, divide the total irradiation for the day
by 1000
Peak Sun Hours = 3500 Wh/m2 / 1000 W/m2 =
3.5 Peak Sun hours
Tech Notes: Solar Power
• We use 6 hours peak sun for all system calculations. Peak sun varies by location
and season. 6 hours is optimistic for Michigan and pessimistic for Arizona.
• Solar panels have output beyond the peak sun hours but difficult to calculate
without site specific solar studies so we just use peak hours to be conservative.
• To figure out how much power a panel or panel array can generate:
(Peak Sun Hours x Panel Watts) / Hours of Load = Maximum Load in Watts
that the panel can power reliably.
• If we use 6 hours of peak sun per day and 30W solar panel with a constant
load (24hrs) we can figure out how many watts we can power:
(6h x 30W) / 24 = 7.5W
• To correctly specify a system the customer must have a good understanding of
his load voltage and total load watts. We use average watts, not maximum watts.
He must also have a good understanding of the peak sun hours at his site. If sizing
a system for remote power we use the worst case winter sun hours.
Remote Power Systems - Hybrid
• Wind Turbines can be added to any outdoor UPSPro™ or
RemotePro™ systems
• Wind Turbines come with their own controller. Output
of Wind Turbine controller connects in parallel with
output of solar controller so both wind turbine and solar
are feeding same batteries.
• Wind turbines are great uptime insurance for a properly
sized solar system. The wind is usually blowing when the
sun is hidden by storm clouds.

Tech Notes: Turbine Blade Design
• Tycon Turbines utilize an airfoil type blade design with an advanced
twisted pitch.
• The pitch near the center is around 15 degrees and the pitch flattens to near zero
pitch at the end of the blade. The blade also gets narrower towards the tip of the
blade. These design factors optimize the lift and reduce the drag.
• The airfoil shape built into the blade creates lift and will actually allow the blade to
spin faster than the wind speed because of differential pressures created on the
front and back of the blade. This is most important at the blade tip because the tip is
moving through the air faster than the blade center.
• The advantages of this type of design are more torque produced and minimal
turbulence produced by the spinning blades. Blade turbulence results in lost torque
and can actually cause the blade to “stall”.
• The twisted pitch design takes better advantage of the apparent wind at all points
along the blade length to produce the maximum torque from the available wind.
• The 6 blade design generates torque at lower RPM. Blades spinning at lower RPM
are more visible to birds which is safer for the birds.

The output on normal cloudy days is 25-50% of sunny day
output. Dark cloudy days with heavy cloud cover affords

In order to meet -60C temperature spec , battery charge needs to be maintained at >60%. If charge
level is reduced the battery may freeze. This is true of any type of sealed lead acid battery however

Bringing A Battery Back from an Over-discharge Event and Testing Batteries
• Disconnect the battery from the array and charge the individual battery using a smart charger like
our TP-BC12-300 for at least 6-8 hours.
• Alternative: Charge with an automotive battery charger. Because automotive chargers aren’t really
designed for charging AGM and GEL batteries use this method only for emergency situations. Don’t
charge for more than 3-4 hours with an automotive charger and don’t do it often.
• Let the battery sit for 30 min to 1 hour after charging. Measure voltage on all charged batteries. It
should be the same within 0.25V
• Connect batteries together in the 12V or 24V array. Connect to a load and let the load run on the
batteries for 30 min to 1 hour. Disconnect batteries and test voltage of the individual batteries. It
should be the same within 0.25V
