Water-Based Wood Coatings Applications and Procedures Guide
SURFACE PREPARATION (for sanded floors):
1. Before sanding, clean the floor using Betco Squeaky Cleaner following label instructions. Cleaning
should be done to remove contaminants from the floor before sanding.
2. Sand floors using accepted NOFMA/MFMA procedures. All old finish must be removed. A dust mask
should be worn during sanding.
3. Finish sanding with a new 120-grit screen. DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL.
4. Vacuum. Tack with clean, dry towels until all dust has been removed.
Using Stains:
Allow oil stains to dry a minimum of 48-72 hours. Apply 2 coats of water-based wood sealer followed by 2
coats of water-based wood finish. A test board is recommended with any stain to insure
compatibility and color acceptance.
MIXING CATALYST FOR Sealers or finishes (requiring a catalyst)
Always maintain adequate ventilation during all phases of the coating and drying process.
1. Rock side to side or mix the sealer container several times before opening.
2. Pour sealer into a clean, dry plastic pour can.
3. While stirring sealer, slowly add catalyst to sealer or finish (one 3-ounce bottle per gallon or one 15ounce bottle per five gallons). Continue mixing for 30 seconds after adding catalyst.
4. Use only Betco catalyst. Never add extra amounts of catalyst. Never use catalyzed material that is
over 24 hours old and never mix catalyzed material with uncatalyzed material. Set aside for 5-10
minutes to allow bubbles to break.
SEALER APPLICATION
1. Measure moisture content of floor in several areas. We recommend using a Wagner Dual Depth
L607 Moisture Meter or equivalent.
2. Rinse refill applicator in water to remove all excess loose fibers.
3. Starting about one foot from the head wall, pour a four-inch wide line of sealer the length of the floor
going with the grain. Stop about three feet from the opposite wall. As close to the wall as possible,
hold the applicator at a slight angle and drag it in a "squeegee" or "plowing" type motion to move the
puddle from one side of the room to the other. Overlap two inches of last pass and pull parallel
passes until entire floor is coated. Brush out all turns, stops, and other applicator marks brushing in
the direction of the puddle-line. Add sealer to the puddle-line when needed to maintain a wet edge
across the room.
4. When 2-3 feet from exiting wall, begin to taper the puddle-line down to a nickel size bead. Back out
of the room by wetting small sections of the remaining floor, brushing away from you in the same
direction as the grain of the wood.
5. Allow each coat a minimum of 30-45 minutes to level.
6. After sealer levels, place fans in an adjacent area to pull moisture away from the job site. When each
coat has dried a minimum of 2-3 hours, re-measure moisture content. If moisture content is not equal
to the first reading, allow more dry time before proceeding to the next coat.
7. If necessary, abrade between coats to remove debris, hair, drips, etc. or if the 6-hour window
between coats has elapsed. Abrade with a maroon pad or a new 120-grit or finer screen. Vacuum
and tack with water-dampened towels between coats.
8. Apply second coat in the same manner if desired.
9. Abrade second coat of sealer with a 120-grit screen or finer prior to painting game lines or finish
coats.

PAINTING GAME LINES
Apply any painted game lines after screening and cleaning the second coat of sealer. Refer to
gymnasium technical literature for acceptable paints and painting procedures. Paint must be abraded
with a maroon pad or used 120-grit screen prior to applying finish coats.
FINISH APPLICATION
Always maintain adequate ventilation during all phases of the coating and drying process.
1. Measure moisture content of floor in several areas.
2. Rinse refill applicator in water to remove all excess loose fibers.
3. Starting about one foot from the head wall, pour a 4-inch wide line of finish going with the grain of the
wood. Stop about three feet from the opposite wall. As close to the wall as possible, hold the
applicator at a slight angle and drag it in a “squeegee” or “plowing” type motion to move the puddle
from one side of the room to the other. Continue pulling parallel passes until the floor is coated. Brush
out all turns, stops, and other applicator marks brushing the direction of the puddle-line. Add finish to
the puddle-line when needed to maintain a wet edge across the room.
4. When 2-3 feet from exiting wall, begin to taper the puddle-line down to a nickel size bead. Back out of
the room by wetting small sections of the remaining floor, brushing away from you in the same
direction as the grain of the wood.
5. Allow each coat a minimum of 30-45 minutes to level.
6. After finish levels, place fans in an adjacent area to pull moisture away from the job site. When each
coat has dried a minimum of 3 hours (refer to product label instructions), re-measure moisture
content. If moisture content is above the first reading, allow more dry time before proceeding to the
next application.
7. It may not be necessary to abrade before final coat unless the previous coat has been allowed to dry
longer than 6 hours. If the 6-hour window has elapsed, abrade with a maroon pad or a new 120 or
finer screen. Vacuum and tack with water-dampened towels between coats.
8. Apply additional coats following the same procedures if desired.
DRY TIME
Allow at least 2-3 hours between coats (depending on the finish used) and 1 hour of good ventilation
before closing job site. Keep air moving over floor for several hours. Finish will reach full cure in
approximately 7 days. Do not place carpet, rugs, or cover the finish for at least two weeks after
completion of coating.
DAILY MAINTENANCE
Do not use cleaners on the floor for the first 2 weeks. Dust mop daily. Use Betco’s Squeaky cleaner as
directed for maintenance.
