OPERATION
To switch on your Beocenter
1800 depress one of the P 1 to
P 4 buttons or the FM, PHONO
or TAPE button, and the indi-
cator to the left will show red
light.
To switch off, depress the OFF
button.
Volume is controlled with this
knob for both speakers and
headphones.
This knob controls the deep
notes relative to the mid-
range and high notes. The mid-
scale setting, O, is the normal
one; sliding the knob towards
the right will accentuate the
deep notes; sliding it to the
left will attenuate them.
This knob controls the high
notes relative to thedeep
and mid-range notes. The mid-
scale setting, O, is the normal
one; sliding the knob towards
the right will accentuate the
hight notes; sliding it to the left
will attenuate them.
The balance knob controls
the relative strengths of the two
speakers. The normal setting
is in the middle, but if the
two speakers are not placed
in perfect symmetry in the
room it may be necessary to
88 - 108 MHz
slide the knob to one side.
Listen to a mono program from
the place in the room you want
to consider your listening
area. Try different settings of
the knob until the sound ap-
pears to be coming from a place
midway between the two speakers.
You depress the MONO button
when you want single-channel
reproduction, whether for
FM-programs, discs, or tapes.
Band Tuning
Depress the FM button and tune
in the station of your choice
with the large cursor on the
dial. Use the circular vernier
control for final accurate
tuning.
The double-acting indicator
light helps you to tune in ac-
curately: The two red lights
will have equal brightness when
a station is tuned in correctly.
If one light is brighter, the
tuning is not in perfect ba-
lance.
FM Stereo
When you tune in an FM ste-
reo program the green indicator
light will turn on, and reproduc-
tion will automatically be
two-channel stereo. If FM
stereo reproduction is di-
sturbed by hiss and noise which
disappears on pressing the
MONO button it is an indica-
tion that your FN aerial is
either out of order or in-
adequate.

AFC (automatic frequency
control)
Your Beocenter 1800 has an au-
tomatic frequency control
circuit which can perform
final accurate tuning for you
and keep the station in tune.
This feature becomes opera-
tive on depressing the AFC
button. When listening to a
weak station adjacent to
a stronger station on the
dial you may find it an
advantage not to use the
AFC feature - that is,
leaving the AFC button re-
leased.
Pretuned Programs
Buttons P 1 to P 4 allow you
to choose quickly between
your favourite programs.
Before you can use these
push-buttons, the small dials
(18-21) must be tuned to the
FM stations you may expect
to receive in your locality.
Depress the P 1 button. Leave
the AFC button released. Set
the knob (18) to the station you
want to be program 1. Use the
red indicator light as when tuning
in on the large dial.
Proceed in the same way in
tuning P 2 to P 4 to the other
programs. Depress the AFC
button so that you will always
be sure that the station of your
choice is tuned correctly in.

PLAYING DISCS
Depress the PHONO button
and put a disc on the turntable.
Set the selector knob (25) to
the desired disc size, 30 or 17 cm,
and start playing by pressing
LIFT. The pickup will automa-
tically lower into the first
groove of the disc, and when
the disc has finished, the pickup
will rise and travel out.
The dust cover can be closed
while you play the disc.
If you want to stop playing
or just make a pause, press
LIFT. The pickup will then
be lifted but will remain in
the same place above the disc.
When you press LIFT again,
the pickup will again lower,
and will continue playing
the disc.
For 25 cm discs the selector
should be set to 30 (33 r.p.m.),
and the pickup arm should be
moved to the first groove of
the disc before LIFT is pressed.
The same applies to the spe-
cial 17 cm discs which are to
be played at the 33 r.p.m.
speed.
For discs with large centre
holes use the adaptor which
is supplied.
Vernier Speed Adjustment
Without disc on the turntable
turn the selector knob to 30
cm and thereafter a little to
the left.
E ||.
„ии +
The turntable will now rotate
at 33 r.p.m., but the pickup
will not travel towards the
centre. With the knob (23)
adjust the speed while ob-
serving the stroboscope dial,
which should be illuminated
by a lamp powered from the
mains. Rotate the knob until
the black sectors appear to
be standing still. If they seem to
move against the speed of
rotation, the speed is too low,
and the knob should be turned
towards +. And conversely, if
the sectors appear to be moving
in the direction of rotation, the
speed is too high, and the knob
should be turned towards —.
Wiping Your Discs
The TURN position should be
used also when you wish to >
wipe dust off a disc before
playing it.
The turntable will rotate, and
the pickup will not be lowered.
Headphones
A pair of stereo headphones may
be plugged into the socket on the
front of your Beocenter 1800,
between the bass and treble
knobs. When the plug is in-
serted, the speakers are cut off
automatically. However, this
does not apply to speakers in
another room which are con-
nected as No. 2 pair; they
will continue to reproduce sound.
TAPE
FM
TAPE
Headphone impedance is
fairly uncritical; impedances
between 16 and 2000 ohms will
provide normal volume whereas
lower volume will be obtained
at higher impedance values.
Tape Recorder
To play back tapes, depress
the TAPE button and start
the tape recorder in its play-
back mode.
To make tape recordings, de-
press the button for the pro-
gram you wish to record: FM,
P1toP4,or PHONO. Operate
the tape recorder as described
in its instruction manual under
Record.
Off-the-tape Monitoring
You can obtain off-the-tape
monitoring if your tape recorder
has this facility (separate
record and playback heads).
You should then depress two
buttons together, e.g. FM and
TAPE, or PHONO and TAPE.
Recording level is adjusted on
the tape recorder in the normal
manner, and monitoring level
is adjusted on your Beocenter
1800.
43
cm
SETTING UP
Your Beocenter 1800 is in-
tended for horizontal place-
ment on a table or wall shelf.
In order to make it possible
for the dust cover to be
opened, a free height of not
less than 43 cm is required.
The depth space requirement
is 41 cm inclusive of cables
and plugs, and the minimum
width dimension should be 54
cm.
Your Beocenter 1800 is switch-
able between mains voltages
of 110, 130, 220 and 240 volts
AC, 50 Hz.
The switch is located in the
bottom of the set; it controls
both the radio section and the
record player. As supplied from
your dealer, the set is switched
for 220 volts. Conversion to
a different voltage is performed
by turning the switch with a
coin or similar object.
Speakers
A total of four speakers may
be connected to your Beocenter
1800: Pair No. 1 for stereo
reproduction in the room where
the set is placed, and pair No. 2
in another room.
The connector sockets are placed
on the rear. The left speaker
plugs into L and the right
speaker into R.

TAPE
FM Aerial
Your Beocenter 1800 has
sockets for both 75- and 240
ohm FM aerial systems. |f you
live near an FM broadcasting
station you may use a Bang &
Olufsen type 8902010 FM in-
door aerial. On the back of the
set is a holder into which the
“aerial may be inserted, and the
short cable should be plugged
into the 240-ohm socket.
Such an indoor aerial has its
limitations, and if you find
it difficult to obtain noise-
free reception or want to be
able to receive distant FM
stations, you will have to
install a more efficient ae-
rial system.
FM stereo reception in order
to be noise-free requires an
incoming signal that is
approx. ten times stronger
than in the case of mono
reception from the same FM
station. Discuss this with your
dealer; he knows local condi-
tions and can advise you.
Tape Recorder
The TAPE socket is intended
for both cassette and reel-to-
reel recorders. A type 0961014
cable is required.
Y ou can obtain off-the-tape
monitoring if your tape record-
er has this facility (separate
record and playback heads).
In this case use a type 6270019
cable.
y
MAINTENANCE
The external surfaces of your
Beocenter 1800 can normal -
ly be kept clean with a dry,
soft cloth. More thorough
cleaning may be carried out
as follows:
Metal Surfaces and White-
lackquered Wood. A soft
cloth moistened in a lukewarm
solution of detergent in water
is recommended. Do not use
alcohol as this may cause the
translucent portions of the
slide knobs to assume a dull
appearance. |
Rosewood. If the cabinet surfaces
seem grey and dry you may apply
a thin film of rosewood oil,
though not more than once
or twice a year. Use a thin
grade of oil.
Wiping the Dust Cover. Re-
peated wiping with a dry cloth
will cause the dust cover to
eventually pick up a static charge.
It is therefore advisable to use
detergent once in a while, when
wiping the dust cover.
Cleaning of the stylus
If the sound is distorted it may
be due to dust on the stylus. —
Use the enclosed cleaning brush
and brush only in the direction
of the arrow in order not to
damage the thin cantilever.
Warning:
Be aware of chemical detergents
for records and stylii. They may
contain solvents which damage
parts of the pick-up unit.
