Message from the Interim Dean
I am very pleased to present this annual report of our grant activity during
fiscal year 2009-10. This was another record-breaking year, as we exceeded
$10 million in funded proposals for the first time in the history of the college.
We also continued to show a significant increase in the number of proposals
submitted year over year.
This year’s success is due in part to more faculty submitting and winning
grants overall, more collaborative proposals, and stimulus funding from the
American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA). We are especially pleased
that all 22 of the new faculty have already submitted internal or external
grant proposals and several have already received external awards totaling
$1.5 million.

Highlights of this year’s success include:
 93 proposals were funded, resulting in $10,511,845 in new awards. This
surpasses the 78 funded proposals last year by 19% and the $7,260,549
received last year by 44% or $3.2 million.
 270 proposals were submitted, a 62% increase over last year’s 166
submissions, with a combined value of $85,133,144—a 120% increase over
last year’s total of $38,878,933.
 Of the 270 proposals submitted, 15 had budgets greater than $1 million.
The collective value of these proposals is $39,454,900 and the proposals
were primarily submitted to the National Institutes of Health, the National
Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the
U.S. Department of Energy.
This report lists each of the proposals that CEAS faculty have submitted and
had funded in FY 2009-2010, with the grant title, sponsor, amount, and Co-PI
information. The CEAS Office of Research Support gathered this information
from monthly funded grant reports distributed by the UWM Graduate School,
WISPER records, and internal records.
Congratulations on a highly successful year, and I look forward to another
exciting and successful year in our grant activity.

New University-Wide Strategic Planning for
Research Begins in 2011
With the strong support of Interim Chancellor Mike Lovell and Interim Provost
Johannes Britz, UWM is engaging in a university-wide Strategic Planning for
Research initiative. The goal of this activity is to provide a series of options
for the next chancellor to recognize UWM’s research strengths and what is
needed to move to the next level.
Led by Colin Scanes, UWM’s Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic
Development, this significant new undertaking for the university will involve
several CEAS faculty and academic staff on an overall Steering Committee
and eight subcommittees. Each subcommittee will report back to the
Steering Committee by April 30, 2011, with preliminary recommendations for
the new chancellor.
CEAS faculty and staff are encouraged to contact chairs and members of the
subcommittees with questions or suggestions once the members of each
group are finalized. The eight subcommittees are listed below and on the
Graduate School Web page.

Recognizing the diversity of research across UWM and promoting the
strengths/reputation of UWM in research and education

Research space, equipment, and other critical support infrastructure

Moving centers of excellence to the next level

Re-engineering administrative processes to the needs of a research
university (reducing administrative hurdles)
6.
Partnerships with other institutions, businesses, non-profits and
government agencies
7.
Budgeting and incentives to meet research and educational missions
8.
Ensuring a culture of ethics, inclusivity and research integrity

planning process is expected to begin early in the spring semester.
In addition, there will be new leadership in the Graduate School in the spring
semester. Three Associate Deans for Graduate Studies and Research will be
announced. Each Associate Dean will be responsible for graduate studies and
research in their respective broad academic areas (Arts, Humanities and
Architecture; Natural and Biomedical Sciences and Engineering; Social
Sciences, Education, and Business.
To complete the new leadership team, a new Director of Sponsored Programs
will be announced soon. That person will oversee pre-award and post-award
grant activity and serve as the authorized institutional official for signing
grant applications and awards.

CEAS Faculty Workshop: Revising and
Resubmitting Proposals on January 13
Although only 25% or fewer grant applications are funded initially, grant
agencies report a much better success rate for applications that are revised
and resubmitted. To help you revise and resubmit your grant proposals, the
CEAS Office of Research Support is hosting a workshop on Thursday,
January 13, 2011.
Marjorie and Michelle will review the most common reasons for rejection by
federal funders and provide practical and effective strategies to revise and
resubmit unfunded proposals. We also will provide an overview of the
review and resubmission process of major federal agencies.
The workshop will be held in EMS Room E371 from 12:00–1:00 p.m.

Presenter: Dr. Peg AtKisson, Grant Writers' Seminars & Workshops
This seminar is Phase 1 of the Graduate School Research Fellows Program
for 2011. Faculty, academic staff, and post-docs participate in a full day
intensive grantsmanship workshop (8:30-4:30).
The Fellows program emphasizes idea development, identifying the most
appropriate funding agency, how to write for reviewers, and strategies in
presenting an applicant's case to reviewers.
Once registered, participants must e-mail Steve Atkinson ([email protected])
and select one of three workbooks for the seminar: National Science
Foundation, National Institutes of Health, or any other agency.
Deadline for registration and workbook selection is January 22, 2011.
Participants can write a pre-proposal master plan to apply for Phase 2 of
the nine-month intensive grant writing program.
Phase 2 participants continue to revise pre-proposals and write drafts of
proposal applications, guided by a proposal writing handbook. Fellows
create final technical proposals based on consultant feedback throughout
the process for submission to agencies.
