Image and Sound Quality Worthy
Dedicated to the Creation of Fine Sound for Over a Century.
Yamaha’s involvement with sound began with the production of our first reed organ in 1887. Shortly thereafter, we began making pianos and other
instruments, and today we are the world’s largest producer of musical instruments. We also operate a worldwide music school, design concert halls and
produce innovative electronic instruments. Our audio components have long been recognized as the standard bearers of fine quality, and with the
development of Digital Sound Field Processing in 1986, we opened a new era in home entertainment. All of our acoustic and audio expertise is now
engineered into LSIs that we design and manufacture ourselves, and these powerful chips are
expanding and enhancing entertainment possibilities in the exciting new field of home theatre.
Recently, we’ve also introduced state-of-the-art video components, and now offer everything
necessary for the finest in music and movie enjoyment at home.

Speakers: When the Speakers are Yamaha, the Sound is Natural
Yamaha has long been known for its Natural Sound speakers. This is more than a slogan,
it’s an honest statement of the commitment we put into designing and building our
speakers. Natural Sound with stems from our long tradition of producing fine musical
instruments. So the experts may measure our speakers in terms of their excellent
dynamic range, frequency response, sensitivity and so on, but the true measure of their
worth is the clean, natural sound you enjoy each time you listen to them.

QD-Bass Technology
QD-Bass (Quatre Dispersion Bass) technology uses
down-firing drivers with square, pyramid-shaped
reflective plates to radiate the sound efficiently in
four horizontal
directions. The
reflective plates
negate any effects
caused by the floor
surface and reduce
resonance between
sound waves
reflected from the
floor and the unit.
Advanced YST
Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology
(Advanced YST) is a unique system in which the
speaker and amplifier work together to cancel out
impedance so the speaker unit has a perfectly
linear motion. Advanced YST helps to ensure the
highest levels of sound pressure
and overall performance.
Effect of Linear Port and Half Pipe Port
Advanced YST produces rich bass sound, and the addition of a
Linear Port reduces extraneous noise for even higher quality.
Advanced YST II (YST-SW515, YST-SW225 and
YST-FSW100)
In Advanced YST II, an Advanced Negative
Impedance Converter enables the speaker cone to
be driven with even tighter control. The result is
more stable and accurate low range response, as
well as higher sound pressure levels, for more
natural and energetic bass reproduction.
A semicircular Half Pipe Port provides the benefits of full 180°
dispersion when placed against a wall, compact design and
minimal extraneous noise for high sound quality.
BASS
The BASS (Bass Action Selector System) function
lets you switch between Movie and Music modes,
providing the optimum frequency response in
each case.
Linear Port (YST-SW515 and YST-SW225)
The Linear Port provides smooth bass response
during playback and minimizing extraneous noise.
Half Pipe Port (YST-FSW100)
The subwoofer also employs a new design feature
called the Half Pipe Port, which further smoothes
bass response and minimizes extraneous noise.

ToP-ART
When processing and transmission of the audio signal is simple
and direct there is less chance of it being affected by noise and
distortion. Yamaha’s amplifier design technology called ToP-ART
features I/O (input to output) Direct Symmetrical Design, with left
and right channels organized in a straight, symmetrical layout for
highest signal purity.
CD Direct Amplification
Engaged by a front panel switch, it matches CD signal levels so
each stage produces less noise, resulting in improved S/N ratio and
maintenance of the amp’s total gain balance.
Custom Installation Compatibility
As befits a high performance receiver, the RX-797
and RX-497 are designed to be suitable for use in
custom installations. It has a Zone 2 out so the
audio/video signal can be output in a second room
(RX-497: audio only). In addition, You can enjoy
audio in 3 different zones in your home by using
main zone speaker output, Speaker B output, and
zone 2 audio/video output. The RX-797 also a
Main/Zone 2 power switch and 2-in/1-out remote
terminals (RX-497: 1-in/1-out).

Natural Sound Audio Components:
Putting You in the Same Room as the Musicians.
Well, not actually. But if you close your eyes, you might well imagine that they are right there with you. Assemble a
system from the components on the next page, according to your listening preferences. Then let the pure, natural sound of
Yamaha audio components bring your music to life as you have never heard it before in your own home.
DVD-Audio/Super Audio CD Ready
Rather than the usual 20Hz–20kHz frequency response, Yamaha
has given RX-797, RX-497, RX-397, AX-497 and AX-397 the
ability to handle frequencies to100kHz. Super Audio CD and other
new formats will be able to output sound over this range, so these
models are fully compatible with products using these formats.
High Dynamic Power, Low-Impedance Drive Capability
Yamaha stereo receivers and amplifiers are capable of delivering
large amounts of reserve power for accurate reproduction of high
energy peaks. This emphasizes the music’s dynamic qualities and
provides a sharper sound image.
Linear Damping
Level variations due to high amp impedance tend to reduce an
amplifier’s damping factor, and frequency variations cause it to
fluctuate. This circuit cancels the effect of these variations,
maintaining a high, stable damping factor, for superior articulation
of all sounds and better frequency response.
Enjoy Uninterrupted Music
The CDC-685 and CDC-585 give you the benefits of extended
playing time and direct selection from all discs. And with
PlayXchange, you can change discs while the current one
continues to play. You don’t have to interrupt the music to change
a disc and you’re not limited to changing only one disc at a time.

The YSP components apply sophisticated Digital
Sound Projector™ Technology to precisely control
the orientation of the sound by focusing it into
beams. The center channel sound is heard directly,
while sounds from other channels are heard after
reflecting off walls. The result is true multi-channel
surround sound that sounds
just like a multi-speaker
system – but without the
need for extra speakers!

Cinema Projector Technology
DPX-1300: Advanced technologies
deliver extraordinary performance.
"Natural Black" Concept
How a video system
reproduces black and all
its gradations is what
determines contrast, and generally makes the
difference between an image that is merely good
and one that is sharp and richly detailed at every
level of brightness. In quest of superior contrast
performance, Yamaha developed the Natural
Black concept, whereby various technologies,
parts and functions combine to achieve truer,
deeper levels of black than those of conventional
home cinema projectors.
720P DarkChip3™ Engine
This DLP chip is Texas Instruments’
most advanced Digital Micro Mirror
Device. As the name implies, it
provides deeper blacks, while
improving contrast in dark areas.
High-Resolution Lens
Yamaha has gone beyond the capabilities of other
projectors with the use of a new high-resolution
lens that maintains resolution sensitivity to the
edge of the lens. Four anomalous-dispersion glass
components are used to reduce chromatic
aberration by half while maintaining a short focal
point and high zoom magnification.
Black reproduction by DPX-1300 and conventional projectors.
Yamaha Natural Black makes
subtle degrees of black in
textures, shadows stand out
more clearly.
With other projectors, black
contrast may be soft and
fuzzy rather than sharp
and clear.
Taking Projector Performance to a Higher Level
The DPX-1300 makes use of a wide range of new
technologies to deliver extraordinary video
performance. Contrast is an incredible 5,000:1,
brightness is 800 ANSI lumens, picture sharpness
is outstanding and colour reproduction is
stunningly natural.
New 10-Bit Video Signal Processing
Designed for discerning home
theatre fans, the DPX-1300
utilizes 10-bit video signal
processing from A/D conversion all the way
through to DMD™ output. In addition, the newest
HQV technology from Silicon Optix Inc. has been
adopted to enable programmable per-pixel
processing. Plus, at high-definition TV resolution,
high-level de-interlacing processing (1080i to
1080p) is performed is performed at the pixel
level. Complex cadences are handled with ease,
not only with 3:2 pulldown, but also with
broadcast film and animation programming, for
smooth, stable de-interlacing. Other remarkable
technologies include highly detailed scaling
processing, jaggy line reduction for HD sources.
An exclusive Overshoot Suppressor is more
natural outlines in images. To further improve
DVD or SD TV picture quality, powerful Digital
Video Noise Reduction minimizes mosquito noise
and block noise.
38
Seven-Segment Colour Wheel
The DPX-1300 incorporates a
seven-segment colour wheel,
with an ND filter-equipped
green segment, resulting in
excellent colour reproduction.
Natural Colour Adjustment System
The DPX-1300 features a colour balance
adjustment menu that enables higher precision
adjustment with easier operation, with three colour
adjustment modes.
Convenient Memory Functions
For each set of input terminals, there are a total of
six memory positions for storing different
combinations of parameter settings, and each can
be used for two different input signals, enabling up
to 84 different memory setting patterns.
Mounting Flexibility
Mounting the DPX-1300 is easy and versatile. Lensto-screen distance can be anywhere from 9 ft. 10
in. to 15 ft. 9 in. (100” screen) thanks to the
powerful 1.6x zoom lens. Motorized vertical lens
shift is ±50% of projection height, so the projector
can be used at any height between the top and
bottom of the screen. Iris, zoom and focus
adjustments are also motorized, In addition, vertical
and horizontal keystone.
HDMI and DVI Terminals for Versatile Interfacing
In order to connect the DPX-1300 to any
component which outputs a digital video signal, it
is equipped with both HDMI and DVI terminals. This
also enables it to handle a variety of other data as
well, such as component type, aspect ratio and
calorimetry, which can be adjusted.
DPX-530: “Natural Black” and
superior features for high contrast,
high brightness and magnificent
colours.
4,000:1 Contrast Ratio
(Highest Level in Its Class)
The DPX-530 utilizes DLP™ and other advanced
technologies to deliver superior overall projection
performance. In addition to a having a wide-panel
DMD™˛ with a mirror angle of ±12°, the optical
engine features a high-detail all-glass lens. The
prism shape and lens arrangement have been
precisely designed and a special coating reduces
the light reflection that can affect contrast
performance. As a result, contrast is an amazing
4,000:1 and small details that would ordinarily be
obscured by black areas are visible. In addition, the
highest level of brightness in its class (1,500 ANSI
lumens) lets you enjoy clear images in ordinary
living room lighting.
Motorised Iris Control for Higher Contrast
The DPX-530 utilises motorised Optical Iris Control.

cooling fan operation by continually adjusting it
according to picture brightness. Viewers can lost
themselves in the movie without the annoyance of
projector noise.
Low Light Leakage
The chassis is designed to
block light leakage from
the front, where stray
light is more likely to
affect picture quality.
4,000-Hour Lamp Life
The lamp has a long service life of approximately
4,000 hours (lamp Cinema mode), thanks to an
improved temperature control system.
DVI-D Terminal and HDMI Compatibility
A DVI-D terminal is provided, so digital signals can
be received for maximum picture quality. This
terminal can accept copy protection (HDCP) signals.
By using a connector conversion cable, HDMI input
is possible via the DVI-D terminal.
Technology

Technology
Surround Realism
Yamaha CINEMA DSP Digital Technology
Conventional multi-channel systems base their
sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using
relatively simple matrix and steering techniques to
create surround sound effects. Yamaha’s CINEMA
DSP Digital technology is much more sophisticated.
It naturally decodes the Dolby Digital and DTS movie
sound formats, but it also draws on a huge memory
of real-world data from actual venues (especially for
the music programmes) and input from movie sound
technicians. This data is stored and processed on
Yamaha-developed LSIs, the most powerful audio
chips in the world.
Way Beyond Ordinary Surround Sound
Our latest technology, Quad-Field CINEMA DSP
actually creates four independent sound fields
(front, surround left, surround right and surround
back) that merge to envelop you in an unmatched
surround sound experience. You hear movies and
music with accurate sound localization, smooth
movement across the sound space, exceptional
clarity and remarkably realistic presence. It will seem
as if the walls of your room have disappeared and
you are in the middle of your own immense theater!
Yamaha Uses Actual Sound Field Data
Yamaha developed a technique called Single Point
Quad Miking to precisely capture the acoustic
patterns of sound spaces. This complex data is
stored and processed on extremely sophisticated LSIs
designed and manufactured by Yamaha.
High Definition CINEMA DSP Technology
(RX-Z9)
The RX-Z9 has six times greater DSP capacity than
previous models, thanks to an increase from 48kHz
to 96kHz/24-bit A/D converters that can accept
96kHz signals for direct digital conversion and
processing. Higher density processing enables
approximately triple the amount of early reflection
data to be handled, for significantly richer surround
sound performance.
Yamaha’s Exclusive 32-Bit Floating Point
Quantization LSI
The powerful LSI performs all
Dolby Digital and DTS decoding
with extreme accuracy, as well as
all digital sound field processing,
capabilities that previously
required two or more chips. It
also outperforms other chips in the precise
synchronization of images and sound.
Night Listening Enhancer and SILENT CINEMA
During low-volume listening, such as late at night,
dynamic range suffers and you may miss some
sounds. The Night Listening Enhancer offers two
modes, Cinema and Music, with three-level
selectability, which will ensure that you don’t miss
movie dialogue or quiet passages, or lose overall
surround spaciousness. It works for all surround
programs, including Dolby Pro Logic IIx.
The SILENT CINEMA mode allows private
listening enjoyment of
multichannel music or
movies, with an
accurate simulation of
surround sound,
through ordinary
headphones.
CINEMA DSP
Programmes and THX
Programmes
One of the main advantages of CINEMA DSP is
the large choice of sound field programmes
available. The basic programme for movies is
Enhanced, which greatly improves the sound of
the surround fields. The "largest" of these sound
fields is Spectacle, which recreates the open
feeling of large-scale, epic motion pictures. The
Sci-Fi, Adventure and General programmes
provide the optimum sound fields for those
movie genres. There are also THX programmes*.
* THX Ultra2/Select2/Select are the surround programs for
home use, based on the THX Theater processing developed for
movie theatre surround sound.
Audio Delay for Adjusting Lip-Sync
A Yamaha LSI provides synchronization of images
and sound, which is called lip-sync. The video
signal goes through the video processor circuit
before it is displayed, which takes time, so it lags
behind the audio. The LSI accurately aligns them
and even allows the lip-sync parameters to be
adjusted using the Audio Delay mode.

Building Speakers for “Natural Sound”
When planning a high quality home theatre system, speakers should not be merely an afterthought. The better the
speakers, the more fully realized the surround sound effect will be. At Yamaha, we build speakers based on a
concept of achieving “natural sound,” so movies, concerts and anything you listen to sounds amazingly realistic and
lifelike. We accomplish this by ensuring that our speakers have wide and flat frequency response, wide dynamic
range, high S/N ratio and extremely clarity in the dialogue/vocals range.
increasing stiffness and suppressing unwanted
resonance, detailed musical nuances can be more
clearly heard.
Yamaha’s Exclusive Advanced PMD Cone for
Natural Sound Reproduction (525 A-PMD Series)
The Advanced PMD (Polymer-injected Mica
Diaphragm) cones are 15% lighter than previous
types, thanks to the use of a low specific gravity
material called PMP (Poly-Menthyl-Penten) that
provides faster response (speed of sound rise and
fall). Internal loss has been increased by 43%,
lessening unwanted resonances to achieve the
smooth frequency response that results in naturalsounding vocals.
WSD Cone Midrange and Woofer (HX Series)
Yamaha's White Spruce Diaphragm (WSD) material
emerged from an intensive search for a light, tough
diaphragm material that would help us achieve
ideal home cinema sound. The pulp material used
for the WSD is manufactured almost entirely from
long fibres of Canadian evergreen white spruce, the
world's lightest single-sheet diaphragm material.

Waveguide Horn (HX and EF Series)
Modern movie theatres are designed to offer a
highly absorptive acoustic environment in which
soundtrack recordings with five or more channels
can be used to achieve a rich sense
of spatial expression. To achieve a
similar level of spatial expression
at home, it is therefore
necessary to use speakers with
a direct/reflected sound ratio
that is quite different from
the speakers used for
conventional music

recordings.

How Yamaha Achieves Our “Ideal” Sound.
The key to achieving the purest, most natural, and most
pleasing sound is balance. Balance among the above
three elements, balance among all the components
that make up the speaker, and balance among
subjective listening judgments.
Testing and More Testing
Yamaha tests speakers in various ways, both before and
after production. Each part of the speaker, be it a coil,
a capacitor, or a cabinet, is selected out of many
alternatives, which may be tested for months before a
decision is made. In the case of cabinets, for example,
we often build 50 to 60 cabinets and test each one. In
order to test many cabinets with many drivers in many
configurations, we begin with computer simulations, then
move to actual prototypes for measuring a myriad of
factors, such as the variations of standing waves inside the
cabinet. An anechoic chamber is used to obtain precise
acoustic data on pre-production models. Even speaker
finishes are rigorously tested for durability and how they
influence the sound. We have an environmental room
where speakers are tested for 500 hours in Amazon rain
forest conditions, and five different listening rooms,

As a result, the tweeter is extremely light to
minimize sound loss, yet is
highly durable. It is capable
of reproduction all the way
up to 100kHz, which is
exceptional performance
for a 3cm dome tweeter.
Highs are crisp and clear
even at high power levels.

where speakers are carefully evaluated reproducing a
variety of music and movie sources.
The Final Judgment
Throughout the design process and especially in the
final phase, our most important test equipments are the
ears of our speaker experts. Having hard data is helpful,
but deciding which cabinet sounds “better” and whether
the speaker meets Yamaha’s high standards can only be
done by the “golden ears” of Yamaha speaker designers
who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of beautiful,
natural sound.
1. Many cabinets are built and tested for each speaker series.
2. A testing room that simulates an actual listening room.
3. A wide range of parameters are tested.
4. Speakers undergo harsh environmental testing.
