Welcome to the V
VIKING is the world-leader in marine evacuation
systems with over 1,300 systems in operation on
passenger vessels all over the globe.
Only VIKING can offer chute and slide evacuation
systems for all vessels types and sizes.
VIKING advantage
The flexibility and depth of our range gives us the expertise to be
able to support an extensive network of locally-based servicing
technicians for cost-effective and convenient service, where and
when our customers need it.
VIKING’s advanced marine evacuation systems provide fast and easy
evacuation, exceptional stability and are trusted by passengers and
crew worldwide.
VIKING Evacuation Slide
The platform can receive evacuees before the liferafts are fully inflated, saving valuable time.
The VIKING Evacuation Slide, or VES, is designed to enable passengers
and crew to quickly and safely board liferafts directly from onboard ship.
Ultra safe slide
Efficient and simple to operate
VIKING’s VES system is ultra safe. The dual track
slide consists of 12 main tubes with 8 separate
compartments that are individually inflated. This
means that the slide’s stability is not compromised in
the unlikely event that the slide becomes punctured in
any one place.
Exhaustive trials onshore and at sea have proven its
evacuation efficiency and its ability to remain stable
even in very rough seas. It is simple to operate and
The VIKING Evacuation Slide, or VES, is designed to
enable passengers and crew to quickly and safely
board liferafts directly from onboard ship. The
platform can receive evacuees before the liferafts
are fully inflated, saving valuable time. Requires few
trained crew members.
Slide angle for ultimate stability
The angle between the slide and the ship ensures that
the system can absorb the movement between ship
and even high seas.
Platform doubles as rescue unit
The slide is connected to 100 person self-draining
platform. In addition to being the landing base from
the slide and entry platform for the liferafts, the
platform itself can be cut free from the slide and
function as a supplementary rescue unit.
Hard wearing, well-proven design
The steel or aluminum structure is resistant to
seawater corrosion. The slide system has a long life
expectancy and is constructed from hard wearing
materials.
4
Single handle activation
One handle turn releases pressured nitrogen (N2) that
opens the system door. The slide is pulled out and
immediately starts to inflate with nitrogen (including
50% over capacity) and air aspirators. The slide system
does not require an external power supply.
The evacuation slide is developed, engineered and
manufactured to comply with the latest international
legislation for safety and complies with international
marine safety regulations.
People can be evacuated from the water on board ship,
by stretcher if necessary.
The dual track system is easy to operate and requires
few trained crew members.
Flexible installation
System features
The 30° angle of the slide also means that the
evacuation slide system can be installed at extreme
forward and aft positions. Liferafts are stored on racks
and can be positioned separately from the evacuation
system, in an open recess for example, and remotely
released and bowsed in when required.
n Evacuates 657 people within 30 minutes,
or 386 people within 17 min 40 sec
Installation heights are from 6 to 15m above
waterline*.
Means of rescue
The slide can also be used as a means of rescue. Side
grab lines along the length of the slide allow people
to be rescued from the water and evacuated on board
ship. Specially designed stretchers are available for the
system that allow for rescue from the water to ship for
those unable to pull themselves on the grab lines.
n Extremely stable, even in very rough seas
n Simple to operate
n Requires few crew members

System in action
Deployment in 6 easy steps:
It requires just one crew member pulling on the release handle
to commence deployment of the VIKING evacuation slide.
The first steps are entirely automatic, from the gas
release of the covering front door to the descent and
inflation of the slide and platform.
The platform itself can hold up to 100 people.
Evacuation can commence before the liferafts are fully
inflated and attached, saving valuable time.
Just 2-3 minutes later, the slide and platform are
inflated.

Deploy the VES system
by simply pulling the
handle.
It takes just 2-3 minutes
from pulling the handle
to full inflation

Attach the container
to the platform and
pull on the release line.
13
Bowsing winches
Bowsing winches are used to
bowse the liferafts into position
in relation to the ship’s side
The winch and bowsing line ensure that the liferaft
remains stable alongside the ship and is not moved
out of position by the movement of the waves.
VIKING systems use Andersen Winches. In situations
where every second counts, these lightweight stainless
steel winches allow for rapid pull in of the line.
Vertical ribs on the drum provide extra grip on the
bowsing line, meaning that the winch needs turning
fewer times.
The highly polished surface minimises the risk of
jamming. The bowsing line slides easily up the self
tailing drum, constantly pushed up by the following
rope wind.
The spring loaded locking system in the handle means
that the winch can be easily operated with one hand.
Remote liferaft release
Remote release systems allow liferaft containers to be
stored far away
The containers can be stored on racks anywhere on
deck, even in inaccessible areas. The liferafts can be
remotely released when required and are immediately
ready to operate. VIKING systems use Hammar Manual
Remote Release Systems (MRRS) to remotely release
the liferafts.
14
Pumping on the release system pump creates a
vacuum which in turn activates the hydrostatic release
unit. A sharp stainless steel knife within the unit cuts
through the rope that holds the liferaft in place. The
MRRS system is an effective and reliable method of
releasing liferafts from their storage rack.
Passenger instructions
Clear and easy to understand instruction posters are affixed the system and/or on the nearby bulkhead.

The VIKING Evacuation
Mini Slide (VEMS)
The VIKING Evacuation
Chute (VEC)
VIKING has developed a 153-person,
open reversible liferaft and mini slide
system packed into a single aluminum
stowage box. The real magic of the
new system lies in its one-button, oneperson release and operation.
This system is designed for small
vessels operating in any sea condition.
It is available with either a 101 man
open reversible liferaft for vessels
operating in sheltered waters or
a SOLAS compliant 101 man
self-righting canopied liferaft for
vessels operating at sea.
The telescopic nature of the
reinforced Kevlar evacuation chute
ensures a safe descent path and
compensates for ship and sea
movements so that evacuation is not
obstructed. This system has the
additional advantage of protecting
evacuees from environmental hazards
such as severe weather conditions during evacuation and is fitted with
a protective cover.
The VAS system is designed and
certified for vessels on domestic
voyages such as ferries sailing in
protected waters. It enables crew to
evacuate up to 153 people in one go
and is designed for evacuation heights
of 1.5 – 3.65 m.
The VAS system is very easy to install.
It comes in a box that’s placed flush
with the ship side, bolted to the deck
and ready to go. No bowsing lines
or welded connection points on the
ship’s side are necessary.
It is compact, packed in a container
the size of a standard liferaft
container, simple to operate and fully
operational within 2 minutes. The
VEMS can evacuate 303 people in
17 minutes and 40 seconds and 501
people in 30 minutes.
The system has 2 or 3 pre-incorporated
101 person liferafts for ease of
operation.
It is designed for installation heights of
5-20 m and has an evacuation capacity
of 565 people in 30 minutes.

Safety in Numbers
While it may not feel quite right to call passenger evacuation
a “numbers game”, we’ve got a few figures that really make
a difference when it comes to passenger safety. Like the
number 1984, for example. That’s when we were first
to introduce a marine evacuation system to the market.
Thirty years later, we have over 1,300 systems in operation.
That’s more than anyone else - and it represents a wealth
of experience.
Then there’s the fact that we’ve got the market’s widest
range of choices. From the VAS mini-slide for evacuating
up to 153 passengers in 30 minutes right up to our VEDC
double-chute and liferaft systems, capable of 908 passengers
in the same amount of time. That makes us the clear leader
in evacuation chute capacity.
Actually, some of our best numbers are very small. Like the
fact that it takes just one crew member and a single button
to release our evacuation systems. Or that many of our
systems feature zero power supplies, zero bowsing lines
and just as few welding connections.
We’re always ready to help you to navigate through our
range of over 10 different models with countless possible
configurations. So why not ask us for the numbers best
suited to your needs today?
