Firing Head (LP/HP)
DESCRIPTION
The Differential Safety Firing Head was designed to be used in Overbalanced
tubing conveyed perforating in highly deviated wells, wells with open perforation,
when achieving an absolute pressure is not possible, or in a situation where it is
desirable to allow the tubular to fill itself, while tripping in the well.
The firing head has a set of ports to allow circulation of well fluids prior to activation.
A drop ball is introduce into the work string that conveyed the firing head down hole.
The ball can be allowed to free fall or be pumped down to the differential pistion. The
piston is pinned to a predetermined differential pressure and once the ball is seated,
that pressure is applied against the piston and seated ball. When the piston is
sheared free, it will strike the Hydro-Safety Impact assembly releasing the firing pin.
This action will allow the well’s hydrostatic pressure to drive the released firing pin
into the detonator. Once the firing head assembly is activated a set of ports are
exposed, allowing circulation of well fluids after detonation. This assembly’s
differential piston has a 7/16” bore through it and utilities a 5/8” steel drop ball.
The pressure can be differentially pinned up to 8,000 psi @ 72°.
There is an Unthreaded Special Applications Top Sub available for this tool.
FEATURES AND BENEFITS
• Overbalanced Tubing Conveyed Perforating in highly deviated wells with open
perforations.
• When achieving an absolute pressure is not possible.
• In a situation it is desirable to allow the tubing to fill itself up while tripping gin the
well or allow for circulation prior to and after perforating.

Caution:
The shear pin values shown on the package
accompanying this tool are valid ONLY for the tools listed in this
manual!
Caution:
Correct shear pin values will vary between lot dates,
always reference the data accompanying the pins!
Note: Check all items against the parts list to be sure of having the
correct parts and quantities.
Note: Check for any damage to the parts which would prevent the part
from being assembled correctly, easily and safely.
1.0 Differential Safety Impact Firing Head Assembly
1.1 Install the O-ring (item #14) on the Differential Piston (item #1) and the two O-rings (items
#17) on the Piston Sub (item #2). Apply grease to piston O-ring and internal bore of the piston
sub. Insert the diff. piston into the piston sub until the shear pin groove aligns with the shear
pin holes in the piston sub.

When calculating the number of shear pins to use, you first must correct for downhole
temperature on the Shear Pins (item #7). Use the charts that are at the back of this manual.
Find the bottom hole temperature that is relevant to your job situation and multiply the
correction factor times the value of a shear pin at 72°F. This value should be found on a label
on the shipping bag the pins come in.
1.3
With the pins corrected for temperature, use that value to help you determine how many pins
to use or what pressure you want to activate the firing head. A good operating practice for this
firing head would be to use a minimum of 4 pins.
1.4
Once the choice of how many pins will be used to activate the firing head, insert these pins
in the holes of the piston sub in a symmetrical pattern. With the pins now inserted, place the
two O-rings (item #12) in the outer groove to retain the pins in place.
1.5
Apply grease to the O-rings and threads of the piston sub assembly and thread this into the
firing head Outer Housing (item #3). Remember this housing can be either the Low Pressure
or the High Pressure Housing.

1.6 Install the two O-rings (item #17) onto the Top Sub (item #5). This Top Sub comes with a
2-3/8 8rd EUE Box and utilizes a special coupling with 2.910” O.D. Apply grease to the
O-rings and threads of the top sub and them thread it into the piston sub.

2.0 Modified Safety Impact Assembly
2.1
Insert the Release Rod (item #18) into the Release Rod Body (item #19) so the milled flat on
the Release Rod is in alignment with roll pin hole.
2.2
Insert and hammer in Roll Pin (item #9) until pin end is flush with the rod body. The Release
Rod should slide easily without binding. Set aside.
2.3
Thread the Firing Pin (item #20) into the Ball Retainer Piston (item #21) and tighten. Install
the O-ring (item 15) onto the Ball Retainer Piston. Set aside
2.4 Slide the Release Rod so the smaller diameter is visible through the four (4) holes of
the body. Place a small amount of grease in the holes and insert the four (4) Retaining Balls
(item #11). The Retaining Balls should be flush with the surface of the body.

Holding the Release Rod in the rod body, slide the Ball Retainer Piston/Firing Pin all the way
onto the rod body. Make sure that the Retaining Balls remain in place.
2.6
Retract the Release Rod and pull ball retainer away from the body at the same time. This
procedure will lock the Retaining Balls into the Ball Retainer Piston and align the coiled pin
holes in the rod body and Release Rod.

With the holes of the Release Rod and the body aligned, insert the Spirol® pin (item #10) and
tap it into the body and through the Release Rod until flush with the body OD.
2.8 Apply grease to the O-ring on the Ball Retainer Piston and the threads of the rod body
(Firing Pin side). Insert and thread the assembly into the Impact Body (item #22) and tighten.
Install the O-rings (item #16) on the Impact Body. The Modified Safety Impact Assembly (LP)
section is now complete.
2.9
Apply grease to the threads on the Release Rod end of the impact assembly, thread into the
Ball Activated Differential Piston assembly and tighten.
Caution:
Be careful not to shear the Spirol® Pin on the Release
Rod while handling!

Apply grease to the O-ring on the Ball Retainer Piston and the threads of the rod body
(Firing Pin side). Insert and thread the assembly into the Impact Body (item #24) and tighten.
Install the O-rings (item #16) on the Impact Body. The Modified Safety Impact Assembly (HP)
section is now complete.
3.9
Apply grease to the threads on the Release Rod end of the impact assembly, thread into the
Ball Activated Differential Piston assembly and tighten.
Caution:
Be careful not to shear the Spirol® Pin on the Release
Rod while handling!
3.10 Next install the two O-rings (item #17) onto the Detonator Body (item #6). Insert the Percussion
Detonator (item A) into the detonator body, then after applying grease to the O-ring and
threads for the Safety Impact, Modified (LP) or (HP) (item #4), thread it into the detonator
body securing the percussion detonator in place
Warning: You will be handling an explosive component and all
safety precautions and procedures must be adhered to.

3.11 Apply grease to the O-rings and threads of the detonator body and insert it with the safety
impact, up inside the outer housing and thread in place. The Differential Safety Impact Firing
Head is now ready to be attached to the top perforating gun.
