SAFE WORK PROCEDURE
DO NOT use this equipment unless a teacher has: instructed you in its safe use and
operation; permission has been given; and supervision is present
PROCEDURE:
1. Plug the power cord from the lamp house directly into the enlarger receptacle of your timer.
Danger: avoid touching the lamp cover and other hot areas of the enlarger as burns may result.
Always let the machine cool down before replacing lamps. Keep ventilation areas clear from
blockages.
2. Open the negative carrier and place the film in the carrier with the emulsion side down and the top of
the picture towards the front of the carrier. Ensure the negative is free of dust and clean if necessary.
Close and insert the carrier into the enlarger.
3. Set up the easel and adjust it to accommodate the size of paper to be used. With the enlarger turned
off, open the easel and place a sheet of enlarging paper in the easel with the emulsion (smooth) side
up. Close the easel to secure the paper in position
4. Set the time / focus switch on the timer to “focus” so that the lamp comes on and the image is
projected onto the easel.
5. Adjust the enlarging lens to its widest aperture for the brightest image.
6. Squeeze the elevation control lever to move the carriage up or down to achieve the desired image
size. Release the lever to lock the carriage in position.
7. Turn the focus control (large knob) as required to focus the image on the easel. Use the tension
adjustment for fine focus (small knob).
8. Determine the f-stop and exposure times needed by making a series of test prints or test strips or by
means of an exposure calculator or darkroom exposure meter.
9. Make the exposure: ensure that the lens is set to the desired f-stop and the times to the desired
exposure time. With the time/focus switch on the timer in the “time” position, press the “expose”
button to make the exposure.
10. For larger magnifications:
a) Secure the baseboard of the enlarger to the table with clamps or counterweight. This will prevent
the enlarger from becoming overbalanced and tip over once it is rotated.
b) Use an allen wrench to loosen the baseplate bolts and remove the column. Turn the column 180°
so that the projector is facing the floor. Place the column back over the bolts. Slide the baseplate
into position and tighten the bolts.
c) Project the image onto the floor.
If an emergency situation occurs while conducting this task or there is an equipment malfunction, shut the
equipment off immediately.
REPORT ANY HAZARDOUS SITUATIONS TO YOUR SUPERVISOR IMMEDIATELY.
