Section 3 - Hazards Identification
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance: Colorless clear liquid
Warning! Harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. Contains
formaldehyde which can cause cancer. May cause allergic respiratory and skin
reaction. Causes eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritation.
Target Organs: Central nervous system, Lungs, Respiratory system, Skin
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Causes eye irritation.
Skin:
Causes skin irritation. Harmful if absorbed through the skin. May cause skin sensitization, an allergic
reaction, which becomes evident upon re-exposure to this material.
Ingestion:
Harmful if swallowed. Causes gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Inhalation:
Harmful if inhaled. Causes respiratory tract irritation. May cause allergic respiratory reaction.
Chronic:
Contains formaldehyde which can cause cancer in humans. There is sufficient evidence that formaldehyde
causes nasopharyngeal cancer in humans, a rare cancer in developed countries. There is limited evidence
that formaldehyde causes cancer of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses and strong but not sufficient
evidence for leukemia.
Section 4 - First Aid Measures
Eyes:
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower
eyelids. Get medical aid immediately.
Skin:
Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing
and shoes. Get medical aid if irritation develops or persists. Wash clothing before reuse.
Ingestion:
Do not induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give
anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately.
Inhalation:
Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If breathing is
difficult, give oxygen. If breathing has ceased apply artificial respiration using oxygen and a suitable
mechanical device such as a bag and a mask.
Notes to Physician:
Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures
General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or
equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by
thermal decomposition or combustion.
Extinguishing Media:
Use water spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or appropriate foam.
Autoignition Temperature:
Not available
Explosion Limits:
Lower: Not available
Upper: Not available
Flash Point:

NFPA Rating:
(estimated) Health: 2; Flammability: 1; Instability: 0
Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
General Information:
Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Absorb spill with inert material (e.g. vermiculite, sand or earth), then place in suitable container. Clean up
spills immediately, observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Provide ventilation.
Section 7 - Handling and Storage
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Avoid contact
with eyes, skin, and clothing. Use only with adequate ventilation. Avoid breathing vapor or mist.
Storage:
Store in a tightly closed container. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible
substances.
Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection
Engineering Controls:
Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower.
Use adequate general or local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations below the permissible
exposure limits. See 29CFR 1910.1048 for regulatory requirements pertaining to all occupational
exposures to formaldehyde, i.e., from formaldehyde gas, its solutions, and materials that release
formaldehyde.
