We recommend Duracell or Energizer batteries only. DO NOT USE RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES. DeerCam Main Batteries Note: After changing the sensitivity setting or camera delay The delay between photographs is controlled by the Rotary Switch located inside the DeerCam enclosure (see figure 1, Item #13). When an animal enters DeerCam's detection zone the camera is triggered. DeerCam will wait this amount of time before it will take another picture. Camera Delay is used to prevent too many photographs from being taken when animals remain within DeerCam's detection zone. Using this switch you can select 10 unique camera delays. setting, ALWAYS disconnect the 9-volt batteries for a minimum of 30 seconds. If this is not done, the DeerCam may not operate properly. This simple technique makes it very easy to setup DeerCam - you do not need to look through the camera's viewfinder. DeerCam® DC-200 After a photograph is taken, DeerCam will wait the amount of time selected on Camera Delay (Rotary Switch) before it will trigger the next photograph. 2 When Live Camera Mode starts the LED will blink GREEN one or more times. Counting these blinks is an indication of DeerCam's battery status (see Battery Level on previous page). You will need to disable DeerCam during times you do not want the camera to activate, during storage or when transporting DeerCam to a new location. Disable DeerCam by closing the shutter on the camera. ii. If you need to see these pulses again: 1. press and release the Smart Switch (LED will flash RED) 2. then press and release the Smart Switch again (LED will flash GREEN) 3. the battery level will be displayed again 1 1 Bob Humphrey – Rockport, IL Turning DeerCam Off BATTERY LEVEL READING LED Blinks This is the normal operating mode of DeerCam that allows automatic activation of the camera. Jeff Maulick – Kaukauna, WI Tom Newsham – Kirkwood, MO 8 DeerCam® DC-200 Steve Gardner – Myrtle Point, OR 9 DeerCam 04 Inst Manual Section 4 – · · 5/6/04 11:16 AM Page 6 Section 5 – Using DeerCam Remove any brush from within 10 feet of DeerCam that may interfere with the sensors ability to detect animals. Keep in mind that during periods of darkness DeerCam can sense animals farther away than the camera flash can illuminate. Camera flash range is 10 to 30 feet depending upon film selection. ·· · ISO 100 speed film has a flash range of 10 feet (best photo quality) ISO 200 speed film has a flash range of 15 feet (better photo quality) ISO 400 speed film has a flash range of 25 feet (good photo quality) · · · · · · In normal operating temperatures (below 70° F) DeerCam will detect big game (deer and bear) animals at distances up to 60 feet. 1 Thread the cord through DeerCam. See figure 5-a 2 Divide cord in half and tie a bow knot at opposite end of eyelets. See figure 5-b 3 Attach cord lock. See figure 5-b 4 Set DeerCam on tree and wrap cord around the tree. 5 Thread cord lock through bow knot. See figure 5-c 6 Press cord lock button and snug tightly towards bow knot. See figure 5-d 7 The sensor detects better when moving side to side through the detection zone, rather than towards or away from DeerCam. If you or an animal is moving towards DeerCam, detection may not occur until 10 feet. If possible, DO NOT point DeerCam toward the rising or setting sun. Doing so may result in poor photo quality and may interfere with DeerCam's sensor performance. Attach DeerCam to a sturdy tree or post. DO NOT attach DeerCam to trees that are likely to move. Sensitivity Adjustment DeerCam features 2 sensor levels (standard and high). The high sensitivity setting is recommended if you want to photograph small animals and birds or if you are using DeerCam in very hot weather and you want a longer detection distance. Be aware that in the high position DeerCam is more susceptible to erroneous detections caused by non-target animals and rapidly fluctuating weather and storms. · · Attaching DeerCam® To Tree You can limit DeerCam's detection distance by aiming/pointing DeerCam at a tree. DeerCam's sensor detects the temperatures difference between an animal and the air. Therefore, detection distance changes as ambient air temperature changes. At cooler temperatures, detection distance will be further than at warmer temperatures. At temperatures above 85 degrees (Fahrenheit), detection distance will be decreased, perhaps to 20 feet. To change DeerCam's sensitivity simply remove the sensitivity jumper (see figure 1, Item #14) by pulling it off and then place it as required. Figure 5 5-a 5-b 5-d 5-c Note alternative method (figure 5-e) of using cord to accommodate use of bungy cord (not supplied). See figure 5-e 5-e Attaching DeerCam® Security Cable (optional) 1 2 Insert cable end into top right hole. See figure 6 3 4 5 6 Insert collar/thumbscrew and feed cable though. Figure 6 Wrap cable around tree and insert end into top left hole only 1/4". Continue to thread cable end through hole and snug to tree. Tighten the collar thumb screw. Close and lock DeerCam with padlock through hole at bottom of unit. (figure 1, Item #11) Attaching DeerCam® With Security Screw (optional) We recommend using the standard position as much as possible. In hot weather we recommend using the STD setting and placing DeerCam close (within 10 feet) to where you expect the animal to be. Paul Fiegl – Amherst, NY DeerCam® DC-200 DeerCam Installation 10 1 In addition to (or instead of) the security cable, you can use a household screw (not included) to secure DeerCam to the tree. 2 Turn screw through security screw hole and into tree. The longer the screw the more secure your DeerCam will be. See figure 1, Item #12 3 Close and lock DeerCam with padlock, precluding access to screw. DeerCam® DC-200 11 DeerCam 04 Inst Manual Section 6 – 5/6/04 11:17 AM Page 7 Section 7 – Bringing DeerCam® Afield You are now ready to put your DeerCam out in the field. Setting Up DeerCam® 1 Strap DeerCam to a tree with supplied cord at approximately the height of the animal you want to photograph i.e. 3-4 feet for deer, bear, etc. 2 Activate Test/Alignment mode by pushing Smart Switch until LED Indicator light is red. 3 Walk through DeerCam's detection zone to verify correct positioning. Verify there is film in the camera. Camera display should be showing a number and is not blinking. 5 Verify the camera shutter is open. 6 Close DeerCam's cover and secure with the thumbscrew. DeerCam will automatically arm live camera within 12 minutes or you can arm by pressing the Smart Switch. 7 DeerCam uses a quality camera to photograph animals. The camera features a date back that imprints the date/time onto the film. Refer to the separate Olympus instruction manual for additional instructions on using the camera, battery requirements, and details about setting the date back. When placing the camera in the CamoTuff™ cover, make sure the camera lens and flash parts are properly aligned with the openings in the cover. ! WE RECOMMEND you experiment with your DeerCam without film in the camera; the camera will operate without film. This will allow you to learn to use your DeerCam without generating photographs. Note: DeerCam's cover must be closed for proper alignment of the detection zone. 4 Using the Olympus® Camera Camera Battery ! WARNING: Close tight to ensure weatherproof seal. Attach padlock if desired. The Olympus® camera in your DeerCam uses 2 AA batteries which are universally available at any convenience store or Wal-Mart. Battery life will depend upon number of photos, temperature, and other factors. Typically about 5 rolls of film can be exposed per set of batteries. Replace the batteries if the camera fails to operate correctly or fails to rewind film. The battery level indicator on the camera is not a good indication of battery quality. Battery output will degrade in cold weather and when rewinding the film. These conditions may not be displayed on the camera's battery display. You’ll want to periodically check your DeerCam to see how many photos have been taken. If film is all or mostly used, replace with a new roll. ! Checking DeerCam® 1 Approach DeerCam from the rear or side. This prevents photographing yourself in the detection zone. 2 Momentarily press Smart Switch. This will temporarily disable the camera. 3 Remove padlock and open cover. 4 Observe the camera display to determine number of photos exposed and camera battery condition. Replace film and camera battery if required. 5 Close the cover, secure with thumbscrew, attach padlock. DeerCam will automatically enter live camera state and re-arm within 12 minutes or you can re-arm by pressing the Smart Switch. WHEN REPLACING THE BATTERY with film in the camera, the camera's frame counter may reset to "O". Loading Film When loading the film, make sure the film is pulled out enough that it begins to loop around the film take up reel. When you close the camera back, the camera display will advance to "1" if the film is loaded correctly. If the display stays on a blinking "O" pull out more film and try again. Rewinding the Film If the camera display shows a blinking "O", this means the camera is out of film. DO NOT OPEN THE CAMERA BACK UNLESS "O" IS DISPLAYED. A roll of film may expose more photographs than indicated on the roll. Do not open the camera before you are sure the film is rewound; you may ruin the film. To rewind the film before the end of the roll, activate the rewind button on the bottom of the camera. If the camera does not rewind the film, insert a new battery and try again. AGAIN, DO NOT REMOVE THE FILM FROM THE CAMERA UNTIL IT IS REWOUND. Matt White – Little River, KS DeerCam DC-200 ® Perry Erdahl – Pine Island, MN 12 DeerCam® DC-200 13 DeerCam 04 Inst Manual 5/6/04 11:17 AM Page 8 Section 8 – Film Selection The Olympus camera film requirements are as follows: • Color or black/white 35mm film. • 12, 24 or 36 exposures (we recommend 24 exposure film as it results in longer camera battery life. 36 exposure film is typically wrapped so tight that is wears the battery down faster). • ISO rating of 100, 200 or 400 speed film. When choosing a film keep in mind: • 100-speed film will provide the highest quality photographs with an effective flash range of 10 feet. • 200-speed film will provide good photographs with an effective flash range of 15 feet. • 400-speed will provide grainier photographs with an effective flash range of 25 feet. Camera Date Back DeerCam is equipped with a sophisticated theft deterrent and recovery system. To enable this system you will need DeerCam's optional Xpander™. But once enabled, your DeerCam becomes useless to anyone else. With the Xpander™, you electronically record your name and phone number into DeerCam's electronics. You also enable your own unique password that must be used to operate DeerCam. If someone were to steal another brand of scouting camera, they use it. If someone were to steal your TheftStop™ equipped DeerCam: 1 They first must somehow get it off the tree. And if they do… 2 DeerCam will not work correctly. After nearly 20 years of using DeerCam we've discovered that DeerCam is the most effective method available to learn and understand animal behavior. Here are a few things we've discovered that you may find beneficial. • You may be disappointed that you do not photograph as many animals as you expected. Some users have called us thinking that their DeerCam is not working correctly when they fail to photograph as many deer as they expect. Deer typically are dispersed thoughout their range, and don't necessarily use a selected trail daily. To accurately determine deer activity we recommend moving your DeerCam often to new locations. After you do this for a season you will begin to understand how deer use your property. the most secure and convenient way to transport your DeerCam. The weather-resistant Holster, constructed of durable materials, features three zippered storage compartments for holding you DeerCam and additional accessories, such as batteries and film. The outer material features Advantage® Timber™ camo, while the interior includes a cushioned lining to fully protect your DeerCam. The DeerCam Holster attaches to your hip using the incorporated belt loop design and also straps to your leg. It’s the perfect way to transport your DeerCam! Ask your DeerCam retailer... • We've discovered many deer trails that only receive deer traffic during the rut - the rest of the year the trails receive little or no activity. • We've discovered summer trails that may have many bucks using them in August, but are completely void of deer activity in September. • Often a heavily used trail is only used by the local family group of does and fawns. • Our experience has shown that if an adult buck is using a trail, other adult bucks will be using the trail also. • Move your DeerCam to new locations if you do not get the activity you expect. Sometimes moving DeerCam a short distance will result in completely different results. • Buck activity is minimal and mostly nocturnal until the rut starts. Do not be surprised if your pre-rut use results in few buck photos. However, if you do get buck photos in prerut you can be confident you are close to that bucks home range. • Bucks travel long distances during the rut. It is common to get one picture of a buck and never see or photograph the buck again. DeerCam did not alarm the buck, it's just that particular buck was a transient. Likewise, if you do get multiple photos of a buck you have a very good chance of seeing that buck during your hunts. • If you only photographed a buck at night don't be fooled into thinking that area is not a good place to hunt. We've concluded that bucks walk trails during darkness, but move off the trails during daylight. The buck is probably in the area during daylight, but he is not using the trail your DeerCam is watching. If you think the location is a good place to hunt, hunt it. • We recommend photographing 24 hours a day. We've never seen any adverse reaction to the flash by deer. Subordinate deer may be slightly alarmed by the camera flash, but adult bucks are seldom alarmed, generally they are more curious than anything. We've never seen any evidence to suggest that the flash alters deer movements. And most importantly, knowing a buck is out there is the best motivation a hunter can have.
