1. Safety Precautions and Warnings
To prevent personal injury or damage to vehicles and/or the
scan tool, read this instruction manual first and observe the
following safety precautions at a minimum whenever working
on a vehicle:
•
Always perform automotive testing in a safe environment.
•
Wear safety eye protection that meets ANSI standards.
•
Keep clothing, hair, hands, tools, test equipment, etc, away
from all moving or hot engine parts.
•
Operate the vehicle in a well-ventilated work area; Exhaust
gases are poisonous.
•
Put blocks on drive wheels and never leave vehicle unattended
while running tests.
•
Use extreme caution when working around the ignition coil,
distributor cap, ignition wires and spark plugs. These
components create hazardous voltages when the engine is
running.
•
Put transmission in PARK (for automatic transmission) or
NEUTRAL (for manual transmission) and make sure the
parking brake is engaged.
•
Keep a fire extinguisher suitable for gasoline/chemical/
electrical fires nearby.
•
Don’t connect or disconnect any test equipment with ignition
on or engine running.
•
Keep the scan tool dry, clean and free from oil, water and
grease. Use a mild detergent on a clean cloth to clean the
outside of the scan tool, when necessary.

2. General Information
2.1 On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) II
The first generation of On-Board Diagnostics (called OBD I) was
developed by the California Air Resources Board (ARB) and
implemented in 1988 to monitor some of the emission control
components on vehicles. As technology evolved and the desire to
improve the On-Board Diagnostic system increased, a new generation
of On-Board Diagnostic system was developed. This second
generation of On-Board Diagnostic regulations is called "OBD II".
The OBD II system is designed to monitor emission control systems
and key engine components by performing either continuous or
periodic tests of specific components and vehicle conditions. When
a problem is detected, the OBD II system turns on a warning lamp
(MIL) on the vehicle instrument panel to alert the driver typically by
the phrase of “Check Engine” or “Service Engine Soon”. The
system will also store important information about the detected
malfunction so that a technician can accurately find and fix the
problem. Here below follow three pieces of such valuable
information:
1) Whether the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is
commanded 'on' or 'off';
2) Which, if any, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are stored;
3) Readiness Monitor status.
2.2 Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
OBD II Diagnostic Trouble Codes are codes that are stored by the
on-board computer diagnostic system in response to a problem
found in the vehicle. These codes identify a particular problem area
and are intended to provide you with a guide as to where a fault
might be occurring within a vehicle. OBD II Diagnostic Trouble
Codes consist of a five-digit alphanumeric code. The first character,
a letter, identifies which control system sets the code. The other four
characters, all numbers, provide additional information on where the
DTC originated and the operating conditions that caused it to set.
Here below is an example to illustrate the structure of the digits:

2.3 Location of the Data Link Connector (DLC)
The DLC (Data Link Connector or Diagnostic Link Connector) is
the standardized 16-cavity connector where diagnostic scan tools
interface with the vehicle's on-board computer. The DLC is usually
located 12 inches from the center of the instrument panel (dash),
under or around the driver’s side for most vehicles. If Data Link
Connector is not located under dashboard, a label should be there
telling location. For some Asian and European vehicles, the DLC is
located behind the ashtray and the ashtray must be removed to

access the connector. If the DLC cannot be found, refer to the
vehicle’s service manual for the location.
2.4 OBD II Readiness Monitors
An important part of a vehicle’s OBD II system is the Readiness
Monitors, which are indicators used to find out if all of the
emissions components have been evaluated by the OBD II system.
They are running periodic tests on specific systems and components
to ensure that they are performing within allowable limits.
Currently, there are eleven OBD II Readiness Monitors (or I/M
Monitors) defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA). Not all monitors are supported by all vehicles and the exact
number of monitors in any vehicle depends on the motor vehicle
manufacturer’s emissions control strategy.
Continuous Monitors -- Some of the vehicle components or
systems are continuously tested by the vehicle’s OBD II system,
while others are tested only under specific vehicle operating
conditions. The continuously monitored components listed below
are always ready:
1) Misfire
2) Fuel System
3) Comprehensive Components (CCM)
Once the vehicle is running, the OBD II system is continuously
checking the above components, monitoring key engine sensors,
watching for engine misfire, and monitoring fuel demands.
Non-Continuous Monitors -- Unlike the continuous monitors,
many emissions and engine system components require the vehicle
to be operated under specific conditions before the monitor is ready.

These monitors are termed non-continuous monitors and are listed
below:

2.5 OBD II Monitor Readiness Status
OBD II systems must indicate whether or not the vehicle’s PCM’s
monitor system has completed testing on each component.
Components that have been tested will be reported as “Ready”, or
“Complete”, meaning they have been tested by the OBD II system.
The purpose of recording readiness status is to allow inspectors to
determine if the vehicle’s OBD II system has tested all the
components and/or systems.
The powertrain control module (PCM) sets a monitor to “Ready” or
“Complete” after an appropriate drive cycle has been performed.
The drive cycle that enables a monitor and sets readiness codes to
“Ready” varies for each individual monitor. Once a monitor is set as
“Ready” or “Complete”, it will remain in this state. A number of
factors, including erasing of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) with a
scan tool or a disconnected battery, can result in Readiness Monitors
being set to “Not Ready”. Since the three continuous monitors are
constantly evaluating, they will be reported as “Ready” all of the
time. If testing of a particular supported non-continuous monitor has
not been completed, the monitor status will be reported as “Not
Complete” or “Not Ready.”
In order for the OBD monitor system to become ready, the vehicle
should be driven under a variety of normal operating conditions.
These operating conditions may include a mix of highway driving
and stop and go, city type driving, and at least one overnight-off
period. For specific information on getting your vehicle’s OBD
monitor system ready, please consult your vehicle owner’s manual.

2.6 OBD II Definitions
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) -- OBD II terminology for the
on-board computer that controls engine and drive train.
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) -- Malfunction Indicator Light
(Service Engine Soon, Check Engine) is a term used for the light on
the instrument panel. It is to alert the driver and/or the repair
technician that there is a problem with one or more of vehicle's
systems and may cause emissions to exceed federal standards. If the
MIL illuminates with a steady light, it indicates that a problem has
been detected and the vehicle should be serviced as soon as possible.
Under certain conditions, the dashboard light will blink or flash.
This indicates a severe problem and flashing is intended to
discourage vehicle operation. The vehicle onboard diagnostic
system can not turn the MIL off until the necessary repairs are
completed or the condition no longer exists.
DTC -- Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) that identify which section
of the emission control system has malfunctioned.
Enabling Criteria -- Also termed Enabling Conditions. They are
the vehicle-specific events or conditions that must occur within the
engine before the various monitors will set, or run. Some monitors
require the vehicle to follow a prescribed “drive cycle” routine as
part of the enabling criteria. Drive cycles vary among vehicles and
for each monitor in any particular vehicle.
OBD II Drive Cycle -- A specific mode of vehicle operation that
provides conditions required to set all the readiness monitors
applicable to the vehicle to the “ready” condition. The purpose of
completing an OBD II drive cycle is to force the vehicle to run its
onboard diagnostics. Some form of a drive cycle needs to be
performed after DTCs have been erased from the PCM’s memory or
after the battery has been disconnected. Running through a vehicle’s
complete drive cycle will “set” the readiness monitors so that future
faults can be detected. Drive cycles vary depending on the vehicle
and the monitor that needs to be reset. For vehicle specific drive
cycle, consult the vehicle’s Owner’s Manual.
Freeze Frame Data -- When an emissions related fault occurs, the
OBD II system not only sets a code but also records a snapshot of
the vehicle operating parameters to help in identifying the problem.
This set of values is referred to as Freeze Frame Data and may

include important engine parameters such as engine RPM, vehicle
speed, air flow, engine load, fuel pressure, fuel trim value, engine
coolant temperature, ignition timing advance, or closed loop status.

3. Using the Scan Tool

When a DTC’s definition covers more than one screen, it is used
to move down to the next screen for additional data.

returns to the menu. It is also used to setup the system when

3.4 Navigation Characters
Characters used to help navigate the scan tool are:
1) “►” -- Indicates current selection.
2) “↓” -- A Down Arrow indicates additional information is
available on the next screen.
3) “↑” – An UP Arrow indicates additional information is available
on the previous screen.
4) “Pd” -- Identifying a Pending DTC when viewing DTCs.
3.5 Keyboard
No solvents such as alcohol are allowed to clean the keypad or
display. Use a mild nonabrasive detergent and a soft cotton cloth.
Do not soak the keypad as the keypad is not waterproof.

3.6 Vehicle Power
The power of the scan tool is provided via the vehicle Data Link
Connector (DLC). Just follow the steps below to turn on the scan tool:
1) Connect the OBD II Cable to scan tool.
2) Find DLC on vehicle.
•
A plastic DLC cover may be found for some vehicles and you
need to remove it before plugging the OBD2 cable.
3) Plug OBD II Cable to the vehicle’s DLC.
3.7 Code Lookup
The Code Lookup function is used to search for definitions of
DTCs stored in the Scan Tool.
1) From the Main Menu, use the UP/DOWN scroll buttons to
select OBD DTC Lookup and press the Y button.

If definition could not be found (SAE or Enhanced), the Scan
Tool displays “DTC definition not found! Please refer to
vehicle service manual!”
3.8 Product Setup
The scan tool allows you to make the following adjustments and
settings:
1) Contrast adjustment: Adjusts the contrast of the LCD display.
2) Unit of measure: Sets the Unit of Measure to English or
Metric.
3) Tool self-test: Tests the LCD display and the keyboard.

The settings of the unit will remain until change to the
existing settings is made.
To enter the setup menu mode
From the keyboard: Press and hold the N button for at least 3
seconds until System Setup menu shows up. Follow the instructions
to make adjustments and settings as described in the following setup
options.

3.10 Vehicle Coverage
The Maxscan OBD II scan tool is specially designed to work with all
OBD II compliant vehicles, including those equipped with the nextgeneration protocol -- Control Area Network (CAN). It is required by
EPA that all 1996 and newer vehicles (cars and light trucks) sold in
the United States must be OBD II compliant and this includes all
Domestic, Asian and European vehicles.
A small number of 1994 and 1995 model year gasoline vehicles are
OBD II compliant. To verify if a 1994 or 1995 vehicle is OBD II
compliant, check the Vehicle Emissions Control Information (VECI)
Label which is located under the hood or by the radiator of most
vehicles. If the vehicle is OBD II compliant, the label will designate
“OBD II Certified”. Additionally, Government regulations mandate

that all OBD II compliant vehicles must have a “common” sixteenpin Data Link Connector (DLC).
For your vehicle to be OBD II compliant it must have a 16-pin DLC
(Data Link Connector) under the dash and the Vehicle Emission
Control Information Label must state that the vehicle is OBD II
compliant.

4. OBD II Diagnostics
4.1 Reading Codes
CAUTION: Don’t connect or disconnect any test equipment with
ignition on or engine running.
‹ Stored codes are also known as “hard codes” or “permanent
codes”. These codes cause the control module to illuminate the
malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) when emission-related fault
occurs.
‹ Pending Codes are also referred to as “maturing codes” or
“continuous monitor codes”. They indicate problems that the
control module has detected during the current or last driving
cycle but are not considered serious yet. Pending codes will not
turn on the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL). If the fault does
not occur within a certain number of warm-up cycles, the code
clears from memory.

If the scan tool fails to communicate with the vehicle’s
ECU (Engine Control Unit), a “LINKING ERROR!”
message shows up on the display.
9 Verify that the ignition is ON;
9 Check if the scan tool’s OBD II connector is securely
connected to the vehicle’s DLC;
9 Verify that the vehicle is OBD2 compliant;
9 Turn the ignition off and wait for about 10 seconds. Turn the
ignition back to on and repeat the procedure from step 5.

If the “LINKING ERROR” message does not go away,
then there might be problems for the scan tool to
communicate with the vehicle. Contact your local
distributor or the manufacturer’s customer service
department for assistance.
7) Wait for the Diagnostic Menu to come up. Use the UP/DOWN
scroll buttons to select Read Codes from the menu and press the
Y button.

The DTC number and its definition will show on the LCD

● The sequence of the DTC currently being observed, the total
number of codes detected and type of code (Generic or
Manufacturer specific) will be observed on the upper right hand
corner of the display.
● If the code being displayed is a pending code, the Pd icon will be
observed on the upper right hand corner of the display too.
● When a DTC’s definition covers more than one display screen,
use the Y button, as necessary, to view any additional
information.

11) If the retrieved DTCs contain any manufacturer specific or
enhanced codes, you will be prompted to select the vehicle

manufacturer to view the DTC definitions. Use the UP/DOWN
scroll buttons to select the right manufacturer and then press the
Y Button to view the DTC definitions.
z If the manufacturer for your vehicle is not listed, use the
UP/DOWN scroll buttons to select Other and press the Y button.
z If the DTC definition is not available (mostly for manufacturer
specific codes), a message will be observed on the display.
12) If more than one DTC is found, use the UP/DOWN scroll
buttons, as necessary, until all the codes have been shown up.
4.2 Erasing Codes
CAUTION: Erasing the Diagnostic Trouble Codes may allow the
scan tool to delete not only the codes from the vehicle’s on-board
computer, but also “Freeze Frame” data and manufacturer specific
enhanced data. Further, the I/M Readiness Monitor Status for all
vehicle monitors is reset to Not Ready or Not Complete status. Do
not erase the codes before the system has been checked completely
by a technician.

buttons to select Erase Codes from the Vehicle Diagnostics
menu and press the Y button.

4.3 Datastream
The Datastream function allows viewing of live or real time
PID data of the vehicle’s computer modules.

4.5 Retrieving I/M Readiness Status
Important: I/M Readiness function is used to check the operations
of the Emission System on OBD2 compliant vehicles. It is an
excellent function to use prior to having a vehicle inspected for
compliance to a state emissions program.
An I/M Readiness Status result of “NO” does not necessarily
indicate that the vehicle being tested will fail the state I/M
inspection. For some states, one or more such monitors may be
allowed to be “Not Ready” to pass the emissions inspection.

z “Y” -- All monitors supported on the vehicle have completed
their diagnostic testing and the MIL light is not on.
z “N” -- At least one monitor supported on the vehicle has not
completed its diagnostic testing, and (or) the “Check Engine”
(MIL) light is on.
z “ok” -- Indicates that a particular monitor being checked has
completed its diagnostic testing.
z “inc” -- Indicates that a particular monitor being checked has not
completed its diagnostic testing.
z “n/a” -- The monitor is not supported on that vehicle.

4.9 Viewing Vehicle Information
The View Vehicle Information function allows you to retrieve the
Vehicle Identification No, CALID and CVN on 2002 and newer
vehicles that support Mode 9.

z A scanning record will be identified by the selected vehicle
manufacturer and the number of DTCs retrieved. For example:
Ford:01 means that the vehicle scanned is a Ford with one
DTC detected. If the retrieved DTCs contain any manufacturer
specific codes and so a vehicle manufacturer has to be selected
when viewing DTC definitions, then you won’t be prompted to
select a vehicle manufacturer since the record will be identified
by the same manufacturer you selected.
3) After a message confirming the selected vehicle manufacturer,
you will be prompted to select the save space. Use the
UP/DOWN scroll buttons, as necessary, to select the desired
space.

for your confirmation. If you want to continue with overwriting,

4.5 Rescanning Data
The RESCAN function allows you to retrieve the most current data
stored in the ECU or to re-link to the vehicle if communication is
disconnected.
1) Use the UP/DOWN scroll buttons to select Rescan Data from
the Vehicle Diagnosis menu and press the Y button.

select Review Data and press the Y button.

This function allows you to get the definitions of the OBD trouble codes

6. Warranty and Service
5.1 Limited One Year Warranty
Autel warrants to its customers that this product will be free from all
defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one (1) year
from the date of the original purchase, subject to the following terms
and conditions:

The sole responsibility of Autel under the Warranty is limited
to either the repair or, at the option of Autel, replacement of the
scan tool at no charge with Proof of Purchase. The sales receipt
may be used for this purpose.
2)
This warranty does not apply to damages caused by improper
use, accident, flood, lightning, or if the product was altered or
repaired by anyone other than the Manufacturer’s Service
Center.
3)
Autel shall not be liable for any incidental or consequential
damages arising from the use, misuse, or mounting of the scan
tool. Some states do not allow limitations on how long an
implied warranty lasts, so the above limitations may not apply
to you.
4)
All information in this manual is based on the latest
information available at the time of publication and no
warranty can be made for its accuracy or completeness. Autel
reserves the right to make changes at any time without notice.
