Student Blogging and Social Media
Dear Parent:
Permission Form
Our class is about to begin work in an exciting, technology rich learning environment based on Web
2.0 tools such as blogs, podcasting, wikis, and other social media. Each student will receive an online
account and will engage in collaborative learning through the use of Web 2.0 social media tools.
Students will be using a variety of technologies during the day as needed to complete assignments,
access the Internet for research, and work with online writing and media tools, such as weblogs. A
weblog, or blog as they are commonly called, is a special type of web page that can be created and easily
updated using a web browser. It also has a comments section where visitors to the blog may leave
comments for the author. The power of these tools is that they create an authentic audience for student
work, which lends weight to their assignments and improves quality. They also enable collaboration and
teaming through the use of technology, which are essential 21st century skills.
Students will have class time to complete their assignments, and may also log on to the programs to
work at home. All that is required is an Internet connection and a web browser. We do, however, wish to
stress that student work created at home should remain the student's work.
All student writing, comments, and media submissions will be monitored by their teacher. If you have
any questions or concerns, please contact your classroom teacher directly for assistance.
No personal identifying information about the student will be posted online, and no identifying
personal photos will be associated with the blogging site.
Permission
Before your child may start posting content online, we are asking for you and your child to discuss
and sign the following form and return it to the classroom teacher.
1. I understand that I am expected to act safely when using blogs by keeping personal information out
of my posts. I agree to not post or give out my family name, password, user name, e­mail address,
home address, or other information that could help someone locate or contact me in person.
2. I agree to not share my usernames or passwords with anyone other than my teachers and parents.
I agree to never log in as another student.
3. I will treat blogspaces as classroom spaces. I understand that speech that is inappropriate for class
is not appropriate for my blog. I will conduct myself in a manner reflective of a representative of my
school.
4. When commenting on other students' work, I will leave comments that are respectful, helpful
messages.
5. I understand that failure to abide by these terms and conditions may result in my losing the
opportunity to take part in this project.
