2 Removal of the Oil Coolant Module
2
Removal of the Oil Coolant Module
Remove as follows:
1. Shut off the engine, apply the parking brake, chock the wheels, and perform any other applicable safety steps.
2. Open the hood.
WARNING: FIRE HAZARD
Do not power wash or steam clean the engine bay in the area of vehicle electrical components,
unless specified by vehicle manuals or service literature. Power washing/steam cleaning can
permanently damage these components, which could result in fire, personal injury, or property
damage.
3. Steam clean the engine. Focus on area around oil filter cap, top of oil coolant module where it mounts to the cylinder
block and front of module to remove any possible contaminants that may enter the lube or cooling systems during
repair.
WARNING: EYE INJURY
To avoid injury from flying debris when using compressed air, wear adequate eye protection (face
shield or safety goggles) and do not exceed 276 kPa (40 psi) air pressure.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
Use compressed air to dry engine.
Disconnect the batteries. Refer to the OEM procedure.
If necessary, remove the front bumper assembly. Refer to the OEM procedure.
If necessary, remove the air filter housing. Refer to the OEM procedure.
If air filter housing was removed, cover turbocharger inlet and air compressor inlet hose to protect components from
debris.
9. Loosen oil filter cap enough to allow oil to drain from oil coolant module into the crankcase. Do not remove cap or oil
filter.
10. Drain the coolant. Refer to section "Cooling System Drain Procedure".
11. Place suitable catch container under the oil coolant module. Remove the coolant drain plug (1) and crush washer (2)
from the bottom of the module and allow module to drain any additional coolant. See below.

12. Remove engine sensor harness connectors from the coolant temperature sensor, intake manifold air temperature sensor,
and intake throttle valve. Cut the ties securing the harness to the oil coolant module.
13. Remove the EGR mixer pipe, cold boost pipe and intake throttle valve as an assembly. Refer to section "Removal of
the Intake Throttle/EGR Mixer Assembly".
14. Cover opening to air intake manifold to protect from debris.
15. Remove the left-hand radiator support rod and bracket. Refer to the OEM procedure.
16. Reposition the oil dipstick tube by removing the necessary attachment hardware to gain clearance for oil coolant
module removal.
17. If equipped, disconnect the cylinder block heater and cut remaining harness ties.
18. If equipped, remove the harness bracket from near the bottom of the oil coolant module.
19. Remove the poly-V-belt from the water pump pulley. Refer to section "Removal of the Poly-V-Belts".
20. Remove the coolant thermostat. Refer to section "Removal of the Engine Coolant Thermostat and Seal".
21. Remove the coolant crossover pipe. Refer to section "Removal of the Coolant Crossover Pipe".
22. Remove the two bolts securing the coolant inlet elbow to the top of oil coolant module and reposition elbow to gain
clearance for module removal.
23. Disconnect and remove the plastic coolant line that runs from the oil coolant module to the fuel filter module.
NOTICE: Ensure any remaining coolant is drained from the oil coolant module and from the cylinder block to
prevent coolant from contaminating the engine oil.
24. Remove the eleven bolts securing oil coolant module to cylinder block and remove oil coolant module. On shorter BBC
(bumper to back of cab) trucks, oil coolant module mounting bolt in position seven may interfere with chassis
components and cannot be removed entirely. See below.

2 Removal of the Oil Coolant Module
25. Once removed, place oil coolant module upright in a suitable drain pan. Tip on an angle and allow oil to drain from the
module passages.
26. Remove and discard the oil coolant module mounting gasket.
NOTICE: No abrasive power tools or abrasive pads should be used on the cylinder block or oil coolant module
gasket mounting surfaces. Debris created using abrasives may enter the engine oil system and cause severe
engine damage. See below. Arrow indicates filtered engine oil supply from oil coolant module.
27. Inspect the mounting surface of the cylinder block for any foreign debris or remaining gasket material. Carefully
remove any material using a suitable gasket scraper and wipe clean using a shop towel. Sealing surfaces must be clean
and dry.

NOTICE: Do not remove oil filter cap, oil filter or oil cooler unless these components need to be replaced.
28. Once oil has drained from the oil coolant module, use shop towels to remove any residual oil from open passages.
29. Using a suitable gasket scraper, remove any remaining gasket material from oil coolant module mounting surface and
wipe module clean using a shop towel. Sealing surfaces must be clean and dry.
30. Install the coolant drain plug and crush washer into the bottom of the oil coolant module. Torque the plug to 50 N·m
(37 lb·ft).

Installation of the Oil Coolant Module
Install as follows:
1. Ensure gasket mounting surfaces on cylinder block and oil coolant module are clean and dry.
2. Install new oil coolant module mounting gasket onto the guide pins.
3. Install the oil coolant module onto the cylinder block. Install eleven mounting bolts. On shorter BBC (bumper to back
of cab) trucks, oil coolant module mounting bolt in position seven may have to be placed loosely into the module
before module is installed due to chassis interference issues. See below.
4. Torque the oil coolant module mounting bolts to the following specifications using the torque sequence below:
a. First pass torque the bolts to 10 N·m (7 lb·ft).
b. Final torque the bolts to 60 to 65 N·m (44 to 48 lb·ft).
5. Torque the oil filter cap to 40 to 50 N·m (30 to 37 lb·ft).
6. Install the plastic coolant line that runs from the oil coolant module to the fuel filter module.
7. Position coolant inlet elbow onto oil coolant module and install two mounting bolts. Torque bolts to 30 N·m (22 lb·ft).
NOTE: Before installing the coolant crossover pipe, check the coolant coupler hose for damage. Replace as
necessary.
