GENERAL
The GHTS-4410 Honing Tool was developed for use in
Sunnen® Vertical Honing MachineS. The tool utilizies
Sunnen GH Stone Sets and PHT Brush Sets.
NOTE: Hone head and expander plates are marked with
corresponding numbers. All numbered pieces should be kept
together when using this tooling.
IMPORTANT
Note reference mark on end of cone and on hone
body. These marks MUST be aligned to ensure cone
will be matched to expander plates. DO NOT deviate
from this orientation.
INSTALL EXPANDER PLATES
Before installing stone/brush
sets, check to make sure
expander plates are in their
correct locations (see Figure
1). Each plate is marked with
a number and a letter, which
corresponds to mating slot on
1
hone body. Expander plates
are angle cut; plates must be installed to match angles of
inner cone.

in a counterclockwise
direction, looking down from universal joint (see Figure 2).
• Grab spring on bottom of hone head, in between mounting
clips, and pull it over spring slots in bottom of
stone/brush set using GH-50 Thumb Spring Tool
(see Figure 3). Repeat for second set.
• Then, go to top of hone head and pull springs over
spring slots in top of stone/brush set.
3. Proceed to next two stone/brush sets and repeat step 2
until hone head is loaded with stone/brush sets.
4. Once all stone/brush sets are loaded in head, expand
and retract sets in head several times to ensure all
moving parts are seated in head properly.

replace, proceed as follows (refer to Figure 2):
I-GH-340C
1. Grab spring on bottom of hone head, in between mounted
clips and pull it down and away from spring slots in
bottom of stone/brush set, using GH-50 Thumb Spring
Tool. Repeat for second set.
2. Then, go to top of hone head and pull springs off
spring slots in top of same sets.
3. Pull stone/brush sets out of hone head making sure
expander plates stay in hone head.
4. Fill empty slots in hone head with new stone/brush
sets, and reattach springs.
5. Proceed to next set of stones/brushes and repeat steps.
TRUING STONES
Sunnen diamond abrasive honing stones have been preground
to a radius and can be used directly from the box. Bore
geometry should be monitored as the stones true in.
SAFETY FEATURE
Roll pins in honing tool are designed to break if hone head
hits an obstruction in cylinder. This safety feature is
intended to protect other components of the tool. Do not
weld broken shafts or universal joints, to prevent possible
tool damage. If repeated breakage occurs as the result of
normal honing, call your Sunnen Field Engineer.
OPERATION
Hone, following instructions packed with your machine.
MAINTENANCE
For consistent and accurate results honing tools should be
maintained as follows:
1. Keep tool clean. As required, wipe off excess sludge
from external surfaces of tool.
2. Periodically disassemble and clean tool to ensure all
internal components are clean and functioning properly.
Frequency of cleaning will depend on usage.
3. Periodically remove universal joint boot from hone head
and grease universal joint and block. DO NOT use an
anti-seize product. Replace boot.
IMPORTANT: Extra care needs to be taken when tool is
used with water based coolants. Oil is NOT a problem.
4. When left to dry in the air, water based coolant could
corrode steel surfaces of hone body and cone surfaces of
hone head. To prevent corrosion, one of following steps
should be followed:
• Daily – Remove tool from machine and soak hone head
overnight in a water displacing oil (i.e., WD-40). Cover only
hone head; DO NOT soak boot covering universal joint.
When hone head is removed from oil, excess oil should be
allowed to drain, prior to installing hone head in machine.
• Weekly – Disassemble tool and thoroughly clean and
lubricate all components (i.e., hone body, stone set, etc.).
CAUTION: Align reference mark on end of cone with
mark on hone body.
