Ammonia
Operating Instructions
Ammonia Cassette
(Part Number: 084015)
Applications:
The Chameleon is the only hands-free, power-free, chemical detector for gases
and vapors in air, allowing First Responders, Firefighters, EMS, Police Officers
and Military to detect the presence of hazardous chemicals. No liquid sample
required. The Chameleon may even be immersed in salt water or fresh water
without affecting its performance. Developed under funding by the United States
Marine Corps, the Chameleon is ideal for users to screen unknown hazards in
their environment.
According to the New York State Hazardous Substances Emergency Events
Surveillance Project, 24% of the events associated with First Responder injuries
were due to exposure to ammonia. Ammonia’s primary uses are as an
agricultural fertilizer and refrigerant in cold storage facilities. Ammonia is also an
ingredient in the manufacture of gunpowder and sulfuric acid as well as illegal
methamphetamines.
Specifications:
The chemical sensor in the ammonia cassette shows an easy to see color
change. Half of the sensor window will change color as shown in the example
below:

The expiration date marked on the packaging assumes storage between 35 oF
and 140 oF, with an average storage temperature not exceeding 77 oF. An
average storage temperature above 77 oF will result in shorter shelf life.
At time of use - remove cassette from its protective pouch.
Holding cassette with text facing up, slide cassette into Chameleon armband until
the cassette firmly snaps into the armband.
Periodically view the cassette to observe color change in half of the sensor
window.
Discard cassette after color change is observed or after 24 hours of use.
DO NOT use cassette beyond 24-hour service life.

Description
Ammonia
Concentration
150 ppm
Exposed
Reaction Time
1 - 3 minutes
Interferences:
The ammonia cassette was exposed to saturated vapor concentrations of
toluene, bleach, DEET, gasoline, diesel fuel and JP-8 jet fuel for one hour. No
false positive or false negative readings were observed. Repeated immersion in
a layer of oil/fuel on top of salt water had no effect on the performance of the
ammonia cassette. High concentrations of HCl (25 ppm) for > 3 minutes cause a
false positive indication on the ammonia cassette. Basic gases including, but not
limited to, hydrazine, 1,1-dimethylhydrazine, methylamine and allylamine will
cause a false positive interference.
