Axminster Trade Series

Axminster has worked closely with the woodworking trades for over forty years and with this experience has a sound understanding of what’s good and what’s bad when it comes to the machinery needed in a workshop environment.

The choice of machines in the Axminster Trade Series is very much geared towards those users who rely on woodworking machinery to earn their living; those who need dependable machines which do the job required, as and when required. Over the last two years, in particular, we have worked hard to ensure all the machines in our range are worthy of the

‘Axminster’ badge and will not disappoint when used appropriately and for the purpose intended.

When you buy an Axminster machine you can be assured of:

• Quality build and finish using the finest materials

• Innovative features and unique design

• Guaranteed accuracy and precision

• Superb motor and power efficiency

• Supplied, where applicable, with high quality Axminster blades and accessories

When we use the definition ‘Trade’ by way of machine rating, we are referring to machines that are capable of being used for approximately a couple of days a week in the workshop and then lie idle whilst you are on site for the rest of the week.

They are of a duty which means that they can easily cope with the workload in terms of hours used and are also easy to operate in a busy environment.

If you are looking for continuous five days per week use you may be better served by one of our ‘Industrial’ rated machines. If you have any doubts concerning the right machine for you, either call us or drop into into one of our stores and we will be happy to discuss your requirements. Whatever your workshop set up we can offer bespoke solutions and advice to ensure that you buy the right machine for the job.

One point to remember – a machine is only as good as the cutting tools you put in it or on it, so always use the best (and use them at the correct cutting speed too!) – and, needless to say, we have a great range available for all our machines. If they are not listed on these pages, visit www.axminster.co.uk for full details.

Trade Scroll Saw

Conveinent, easy to reach NVR switch

Twin arm pivots to create a near perfect parallel blade action

Takes pinned or pinless blades

Maximum depth of cut is 65mm, larger than most other machines

Eye shield, work hold down clamp & dust blower nozzle for safe use

AWFS18

This quality scroll saw is made almost entirely in cast iron which has excellent vibration damping qualities.

The twin pivot arm mechanism provides minimum blade oscillation, giving a very clean cut. A choice of stroke depth of 10 and 20mm also gives further options for different cutting tasks, as does the electronically variable stroke rate of between 400-1,400 per minute. Able to take both pinned and pinless blades, a handy blade clamp setting jig is built into the table, making accurate blade changes easy to do. The very large cast iron table has a smooth surface and gives great support to the work, also it can easily be tilted to 45° for bevel work. The table insert can be replaced with a blank unit which can be drilled to suit the blade, giving almost zero clearance for fine work. A 120W induction motor gives ample power and is silent running to avoid distractions. An articulated hose provides air from a bellows to keep the blade area free of dust, whilst a vacuum extractor can be connected to an outlet for dust control. An eye shield and work hold down foot are provided for added safety during use.

A separate, large, emergency stop control is fitted, in line with requirements for schools and colleges, offering a quality scroll saw at a realistic price.

Supplied with a blank table insert, spare pinless blade clamps and a selection of blades.

Trade Bandsaws

Welded steel body

Quick release blade tensioning lever mounted on rear

Micro adjustable precision guides provided above and below the table

SBW3501B

The SBW3501B with its high specification and modest price, is a very popular machine for the trade or home workshop. The combination of rigidly built steel body, large, finely ground cast iron table, deep section rip fence and micro adjustable ball bearing blade guides produces the high level of performance demanded by both trade and amateur craftsmen. The rip fence runs on a calibrated aluminium extrusion and is locked firmly in place with a lever, giving a solid and accurate location. The adjustable precision mitre fence is T-slotted into the table for added safety and accuracy. The table tilt quadrants are set very widely apart to give the maximum support to the table and to make the tilt action very smooth. Cutting depth is controlled by a well engineered rack and pinion system, with a lock to set the guides into position. At the rear of the machine are the blade tracking control, the blade tension indicator and a quick action blade tension lever, useful for both blade changing and for releasing the tension on the blade when the machine is not in use. The powerful induction motor transmits its power via a multi-groove flat belt, ensuring smooth running and zero slip. Safety features include a motor brake, interlocked and micro-switched doors and an emergency stop switch. Beautifully made and sure to please.

Supplied complete with floor stand, rip fence, mitre fence and an Axcaliber Premium blade.

SBW4300B

A bandsaw is probably the most versatile machine in any workshop and often

the first machine used when preparing timber. With a powerful motor, large capacities and made to the exacting standards we expect of our Trade range of machines, this bandsaw has become firmly established. It offers excellent safety features including braked motor and interlocked doors and twin extraction ports. A rigid welded steel chassis, cast iron table and heavy duty bearing blade guides are standard, along with a rigid rip fence and precision mitre fence. One often overlooked feature is the ease of changing the blade; it has a quick release blade tensioning lever which substantially speeds up the process of blade changing. Two belt speeds offer the right speed for the job, big or small. A wide range of blades is available, all made here in Axminster. First class build quality, ease of use and versatility mark this bandsaw out as a top machine for trade use.

Supplied with rip fence, mitre fence and Axcaliber Premium blade.

AW10BSB2 & AW12BSB2

These two machines, the AW10BSB2 and AW12BSB2, are solidly made saw benches with large

cast iron tables mounted on a heavy gauge steel chassis. Recent upgrades include a right hand side extension table with longer fence rails to give at least 610mm cut between fence and blade. This allows a typical “8 x 4ft” sheet to be cut down the middle without needing any extension tables.

Both machines are now fitted with larger control wheels for the blade height and tilt; this sounds unimportant, but actually has a surprising effect on the feel and controllability of the machine.

There is now a side door on the chassis to give easy access for maintenance or cleaning. All of the old great features remain, so you get a very solid fence, clamped at both ends and with a micro adjustment facility. This fence also has a separate rip fence plate to give your work support up to the centre point of the blade, which is much safer and prevents burning marks on the timber. High torque induction motors provide plenty of power for all jobs. A decent mitre fence is provided, running in standard 19mm T-slots, one each side of the blade. Dust extraction is well provided for, with a separate port on the crown guard.

A quality Axcaliber TCT blade is fitted and many other blades are available to suit any job. So, out of the box these two saws are ready for work and may be all you need, but we do offer a couple of useful options to further extend their versatility. (see below)

1. A pair of cast iron extension tables.

These can either be mounted one to each side of the blade or both on one side. The choice is yours.

Supplied with long fence rails and scales, these would give you an 800 x 1,170mm (800 x 1,480mm

2. A simple sliding table, more of a cross cut table in design, fitted with a mitre fence with a long support rail and work clamp.

This gives 1,200mm travel through the blade, great for board or panel work. An added bonus is that this assembly can easily be removed without requiring tools, creating more space around the machine.

MJ12-1600 MKII

Constructed in cast iron with welded heavy gauge steel and fitted with a 1,600mm alloy extrusion sliding

table, it is robust and stable for everyday use. The good sized, deep section cast iron main table is fitted with a cast iron extension table giving a combined surface of

825 x 800mm, plus a further steel plate extension giving a total working surface of 1,265 x 800mm. A heavy gauge cast iron rip fence holder and deep section alloy fence rail is included. The sliding table is smooth running, fully adjustable and gives a travel of 1,300mm through the blade.

A crosscut support table, with a telescopic support arm, can be positioned anywhere on the sliding table and has a telescopic fence 1,200-2,200mm long, enough for full size boards. This can easliy be removed without tools for storage if required.

A powerful 2.2kW output 1ph high torque motor drives both the main blade and a scoring blade. The size of the main blade can be a choice of 254, 305 or 315mm, without removing the scoring blade. The scoring blade is easy to adjust through the table top and can be retracted below the surface when not required. Smooth acting blade controls, efficient dust extraction and a micro adjustable rip fence contribute to easy use.

Included as standard are a 315mm Axcaliber main blade, scoring blade, a rear feed-off table, small mitre fence (of a clever design for use on the sliding table with a work clamp), an edge shoe and table support legs.

Its rugged construction, independently and fully adjustable tables, threeknife cutter block and powerful motor make it a popular choice with keen

hobbyists and trade professionals alike. The planer is constructed largely of cast iron and is mounted on a substantial steel stand which also houses the motor and the switchgear. The planer block is equipped with three resharpenable high speed steel blades which give a truly excellent finish to the timber and there is a setting device included which eases the job of blade changing.

The planer block is fully protected across its whole width by a strong aluminium alloy guard. The infeed and outfeed tables are independently adjustable for height, which not only makes for quick adjustment of the blade height relative to the table but allows for cutting of stopped chamfers up to 12mm deep. The side fence, which is a heavy cast iron unit with a ground surface, is clamped in two places and is fully adjustable for angles between 45° and 90°.

Waste extraction is from the rear of the machine via a 100mm(4”) flanged spigot fixed to the body and connected to a chippings extractor. Wheels are fitted to the stand to allow mobility around the workshop. model Specification

Planing block equipped with a pair of superb quality double-sided HSS disposable blades giving an almost perfect finish

Dust collection via shroud fitted with a 100mm diameter outlet

Gauge indicates thickness of material

Extra long tables with support rollers

1,800W brush motor, gives ample power

The CT330 is a robust machine with a slightly greater width capacity, a more powerful motor and longer tables than most of the similar models on the market.

The planing block, which is powered by an 1,800W brush motor, is equipped with a pair of double-sided disposable blades which are simplicity itself to replace, just requiring the removal of the blade carrier with the spanner provided, the fitting of a new blade and the replacement of the carrier. No fiddly height setting is required. The planer block height is adjusted by a very precise control positioned conveniently on top of the machine and there is a scale on the front face for easy reference to the timber thickness. There are two other aids to controlling the timber thickness, one is a gauge on the front of the motor housing which indicates the depth of cut being taken. The other being a depth stop with presets (1/8”, 3/8”, 1/2”, 3/4”,

1” & 1 1/4”) for finished board thickness. In addition, the planing block unit is equipped with a lock which removes any chance of the height setting altering during the planing operation.

Although the CT330 is fitted with increased length infeed and outfeed tables, it is recommended that a suitable roller stand is used for long planks for both safety and accuracy of the work. Roller stands are detailed within the

Machinery section. Dust collection is via a shroud on the top of the block which is fitted with a 100mm diameter outlet for direct connection to a suitable chip collector.

This is a stand-alone thicknesser with a very useful capacity but of compact design. Quite substantially manufactured and amply powered by a 2.75kW industrial quality motor, this is a very useful machine to have in any workshop. Able to produce a very high quality finish due to the speed of the knife block and the variable speed feed rate giving 5-7m/min feed speeds. The large cast iron thicknessing table features a central column with a locking mechanism to prevent any movement. With a maximum capacity of 410 x 225mm but able to take workpieces down to

6mm thick and only 200mm long, a wide variety of work can be undertaken. A great machine for floorboard and frame manufacturing.

An optional digital height read-out allows accurate timber sizing.

Fence & cutter block guard can be configured for LH or RH operation

Cast iron tables & tilting fence offer exceptional accuracy & stability

Pivoting dust extraction hood operates on thicknessing & surfacing modes

A trade rated planer thicknesser with ground cast iron planing and thicknessing tables and a cast iron tilting fence.

Being made of cast iron, this is a very heavy machine and is an excellent choice for either the trade professional or the discerning home user. The combination of a three-knife cutter block and the vibration-reducing mass of the machine results in a very clean finish to the work. The dust extraction hood is positioned underneath the table for surfacing and on top of the table, with both of the tables tilted out of the way, for thicknessing. The three-knife cutter block is set using the gauge supplied, ensuring that each knife is set exactly to the block. For optimum setting both tables are fully adjustable and electrically interlocked to avoid accidental starting without the cutter guard in place.

Two other features of note:

1. There are on/off switches on both ends of the machine, one for planing and one for thicknessing.

2. The cast iron fence can be positioned on either side of the table for left hand or right hand operation.

Both tables are adjustable & electrically interlocked for safety

A larger than usual trade rated planer thicknesser with ground cast iron tables that are heavily webbed underneath and somewhat longer than usual, giving great support on long

workpieces. Being a larger version of our very successful AW106PT, it shares the same features to create an easy to use and accurate machine. A 2.2kW 1ph 230V motor drives a four-knife cutter block giving an excellent finish, aided by the 8m per minute feed speed on the thicknessing mode. Conversion from surface planing to thicknessing is an easy and tool free operation, with the tables simply swinging out of the way and the safety interlocked dust chute hinging around to above the cutter block. Although some room has to be allowed for the tables, the ability to see exactly what is happening whilst thicknessing is invaluable. Switch control gear is placed at each end of the machine for convenient operation. The fourknife cutter block has resharpenable HSS blades and is easily reset with the included jig. The combination of the vibration damping mass of the machine plus the four knife-cutter block results in a very clean finish. This machine will give great results in a busy trade workshop.

AW168PT

This is a big planer thicknesser with ground cast iron tables that are heavily webbed underneath and long enough to

give great support on long workpieces. The chassis is made from welded steel, is very stiff and stands on four feet that can be through bolted for extra security. Being a larger version of our very successful AW128PT, it shares most of the same features to create an easy to use and accurate machine. The 3.0kW 1ph 230V motor drives a four-knife cutter block giving an excellent finish, aided by the 8m per minute feed speed on the thicknessing mode. The alloy fence is nice and long, with a finely machined surface. Conversion from surface planing to thicknessing is an easy and tool free operation, with the tables simply swinging out of the way and the safety interlocked dust chute hinging around to above the cutter block. The thicknessing table has support rollers on the ends which support longer boards. Although some room has to be allowed for the tables, the ability to see exactly what is happening whilst thicknessing is invaluable. Switch control gear is placed at each end of the machine for convenient operation. The four-knife cutter block has re-sharpenable HSS blades and is easily re-set with the included jig. Trade Spindle Moulder

WS1000TA

Offering a comprehensive range of facilities for the

Trade customer, the WS1000TA spindle moulder is

deservedly popular. Built around a 4mm plate steel welded chassis with a solid, cast iron table, it is certainly robust. Also, having a 30mm spindle with a tilt range of +5° to - 45° with a travel of 100mm means that you can make use of a huge range of standard Euro cutters, (mounted in a suitable cutter block) or moulding blocks up to 200mm in diameter.

The 2.8kW 230V 1ph braked induction motor drives through four belt speeds, ensuring the correct speed for the job in hand. Unusually, a small sliding table is included, which also has a mitre fence and work clamp. This is perfect for end grain work, panel moulding and tenon production. The spindle hood is made from cast aluminium and is fitted with micro adjustable fences, a full set of work guides and a 100mm dust port. This is all fully adjustable, quickly and accurately, without the use of tools.

The safest method of working is to use a power feed unit.

To this end we have pre-drilled the table to match the Co-

Matic AF32 Power Feed machine. This unit has three spring loaded rubber drive wheels with a choice of four speeds, and can be angled and positioned exactly where you need it. This transforms spindle moulding into a virtually hands free operation, perfect for multiples of the same operation.

Other options for the moulder include a tenoning plate, to allow top and bottom tenons in one pass, a ring fence for curvature work and a square table plus telescopic leg for extra work support. Did I say “Comprehensive” at the beginning?

Square Table

This accessory is a support table complete with a telescopic support arm. It clamps to the sliding table to provide extra support when machining panels or the ends of long boards. Supplied with a long fence arm c/w length stop and a mitre angle scale. The telescopic arm requires mounting to the machines chassis using the mounting holes provided. Some care should be taken when mounting the arm to ensure that the table stays level throughout its travel. Overall length 1,050mm x

450mm width.

Integral

Fence Set

Fitting either machine, these finger fence plates replace the standard fence

plates. They offer close protection from the cutter block by being able to enclose it with individual fingers. This is especially useful when carrying out repeat tasks.

Tenon Plate

This accessory is a simple alloy plate that lifts the workpiece above the table.

This means that you can machine the top and bottom surface of the work, such as when creating a tenon. It can be mounted next to the mitre fence and clamp so as to make the machining of end grain material as safe as possible. Overall length

650mm x 120mm width.

Ring Fence

This ring fence (or profile guard) will allow curved panels and other curved

workpieces to have a moulding applied to an edge. Will fit both the WS100/30 and WS1000TA spindle moulders. Replaces the standard hood/fence arrangement.

A medium weight power feed unit with a choice of four feed speeds - easily

selectable by removing the side plate and re-positioning the drive gears. The horizontal and vertical position of the drive head can be precisely adjusted with the aid of the two adjusting screws and then securely locked in place with the two handles. An additional feature is the ability to rotate the head through 90° so that pressure can be applied to the work in either the vertical or horizontal planes. The unit is secured to the table of the machine, either by bolting through or by screwing into holes tapped into the cast iron bed. If drilling the holes into the table of your machine is too disheartening then the purchase of the universal quick fix support plate (800430) is an excellent solution. The plate bolts onto the corner of a table and is clamped in place with the bolts provided. The top of the plate is drilled and tapped to accept all of the power feed units we offer, allowing the unit to be bolted onto whichever machine it is required.

A heavy duty chisel morticer of 25mm capacity, cast iron frame construction with

a welded steel stand. A single handwheel controls both longitudinal and lateral table movement. This system prevents the table from “skewing”, a problem common with other morticers. A multiple position material clamp accommodates different workpiece widths, whilst a multi-position downfeed hand lever provides the correct leverage for comfortable use. A gas strut provides smooth downward travel of the headstock, which also allows headstock “parking” in any position. A large cast iron table with a tall back fence, plus an easily set depth stop for repeat accuracy is fitted. This machine is well suited to the busy workshop and will provide years of accurate and trouble-free use.

Accepts 1.3/16” and 13/16” shanked chisels. N.B. A chisel morticer will only work as

well as the chisel cuts, please do not stint on the quality of the chisels you purchase.

SS-12VS

The SS-12VS disc sander is heavily built in cast iron and has several features that improve the function of the

machine. Firstly, rather than having a standard tilting work table, the table on this sander remains level whilst the whole motor and disc arrangement tilts. This allows your work to stay level, improving accuracy and safety. The disc can be tilted from -5° to + 45°, enabling many tasks to be undertaken. The disc angles are adjusted by a rack and pinion arrangement, plus a quick action index system selects -5, 0, 15, 22.5, 30 and 45°. The other major feature is variable disc speed. The motor on this machine is a 750W DC brush type unit, electronically controlled to give a disc speed of between 1,000-3,000rpm. This means that you can choose the disc speed that is right for the job, whatever the material.

Disc speed is maintained electronically to compensate for work loads. A manual disc brake is fitted to enable the disc to be stopped quickly if required. The table mounting arms have adjustable stops to make sure that the table is set exactly at 90° to the disc, whilst also allowing the table to be hinged forward for easy abrasive changing. The abrasive is Velcro backed for easy changing at any time, allowing the right abrasive to be quickly fitted. Other safety features include adjustable table/disc clearance and a disc quadrant guard. A 63-100mm dust extraction outlet is fitted below the disc, a vacuum type extractor is recommended for this sander. A rear carrying handle is included for bench use or the machine can be mounted onto an optional floor stand.

Both functions have a work stop, plus an eye shield on the roller end. There is a graphite plate on the platen to reduce friction which can be an issue. A simple door closes off the platen when it is not being used. Belt changing is very simple, as is belt tracking via a hand knob. The direct drive 0.75kW motor is fully dust proofed to iP54 standards and has an automatic brake fitted for quick stopping. This sander would prove to be a very useful addition in most trade workshops, and it is built to work every day.

BS648

A sturdy and robust machine, fabricated from heavy

gauge steel plate and cast iron components. Versatile, because the belt arm can be used in any position from horizontal to vertical. The whole belt arm pivots around a very large flange with a graduated scale and the outer end of the belt drive roller is supported in its own ball bearing assembly. Fitted with a very comprehensive guarding system that allows the operator to expose only the amount of sanding belt required, but still allowing very easy changes of the belts. This machine has a large cast iron sanding table, which tilts from minus 15° to plus

45° and gives great support. When used as a linisher in the horizontal mode, the guarding can be removed to expose the maximum amount of belt and a fixed work stop is provided. The close fitting guarding coupled with two 62mm dust outlets will give exceptional extraction when attached to a suitable fine dust collector. Uses standard 150 x 1,220mm abrasive belts.

ST-480 BDSDM

The ST-480 is a compact, single drum sander that can also be easily converted to a brush sander. it is supplied as a single drum sander that can handle boards and flat panels up to 980mm wide in two passes. Features include a variable speed conveyor controlled by a load sensing electronic system to prevent overheating of the sanding abrasive.

A polyurethane conveyor belt is fitted, which has good grip but is non-marking. The sanding drum is balanced to prevent vibration and the abrasive loadings are spirally wound and secured by spring-loaded clips. A simple tool is provided to ease the abrasive changing task. The sanding drum is powered by an inverter driven induction motor. The variable drum speed provides a further control of the finish and also allows the use of the optional sanding brushes. The silicon carbide sanding brushes are supplied as a complete exchange kit. Available in a wide variety of grits, they are simple to fit in place of the sanding drum. Brush heads are very effective for profile sanding, denibbing and preparing mouldings for finishing.

You can sand sealer coats and primers with the most uniform control of the finish. Another option is a “Fladder” style sanding head. These heads use brush bristle supported abrasive strips. The head is supplied with a set of 180G abrasives, these are easily changed as the abrasives are supplied on strips which are simply slid into the sanding head. Perfect for sanding mouldings such as architrave, skirtings etc, or for use on metals. There is also a wire brush attachment, used to distress new wood to look weathered or create a grained look. This can also be used for brushing metals.

This size of drum has been selected as the largest that can still be easily handled when full of waste material, anything larger would present possible problems when requiring emptying. The accessory kit included with the workshop vacuum extractor includes a 4 metre 100mm vacuum hose for linking to most workshop machines and a 2.9 metre 32mm hose and step down adaptor for connecting to hand operated power tools or small bench top machines. Many accessories are available to tailor this machine to your requirements, including a HEPA filter module for M Class filtration performance. This is a rugged and high performing machine, designed and built in England!

5 micron, multi-layer filter for chips and saw dusts

Superb, quiet running machine for the smaller trade workshop

UB-801F

A thoroughly modern design of dust extractor with many individual features of

note. The excellent performance comes from careful matching of the motor, impellor and housing, resulting in a quietly efficient machine able to extract chips and coarse dust from almost all small or medium sized machinery. An alloy impellor is fitted to reduce the risk of sparks and the standard filter is of 5 micron rating. A large capacity plastic waste sack and quick release straps are included. A clever feature is that you can divert the input air to a nozzle built into the base, enabling the machine to be used as a powered, mobile floor sweeper. Blast gates are fitted onto both inlet and floor sweep functions. A comfortable tubular handle and castor wheels are provided for easy mobility. The filtration performance can easily be upgraded by the addition of the CK-370Z filter cartridge, available as an optional extra. This is an excellent addition for those who wish to collect fine dust from saws or sanders. Easy to keep clean with the side-mounted crank handle, the extra surface area means that the overall air flow is not significantly reduced. Hose not supplied.

This ruggedly built, highly efficient extractor is

intended for daily workshop use. With an efficient impellor running in a carefully designed housing and powered by a 1.5kW motor, it produces more than enough airflow to run either two machines simultaneously or one large machine such as a big panel saw. A 5 micron filter bag is complemented by a large plastic waste sack, secured by quick fit metal straps. A clever feature is the bag hook system, making it easy for one person to fit/replace the waste sack. With the air inlet facing downwards and offering a choice of 1 x

150mm or 2 x 100mm inlets it is easy to connect to either a duct system or flexible hoses. Use for chips or coarse dusts, or, with the addition of the optional CK-500S filter cartridge upgrade the performance to extract fine dusts.

Little air flow is lost due to the large surface area; a crank handle operated paddle keeps the filter clean. Fitted with castors and a grab handle, this unit is easily moved around the workshop. Supplied without hose. N.B.16A

This is a large extractor for trade workshop use. Ideal for connection to a simple ducted system or for a large individual machine. A high efficiency impellor, running in a carefully designed housing, produces a large airflow.

Robustly built and quiet running, this unit has twin 5 micron filters and large plastic waste sacks. The bag hook system makes fitting or replacing the waste sacks a quick and easy task. Both filters and bags are secured with quick fit metal straps. An adjustable diverter valve ensures that both waste sacks are filled evenly. Castors fitted to the base allow easy movement when required.

Used as it is, this extractor is best suited for chips and large dusts. However, you can upgrade the performance by fitting two of the optional CK-500S cartridge filters.

These 1 micron units will handle fine dusts. They are easy to keep clean with a crank handle operated paddle. Little air flow is lost due to the large surface area. Supplied without hose, this extractor is a quiet and efficient machine. N.B. 16A supply required

This is a small, highly portable cyclone extractor, aimed at the smaller workshop with many different types of

machinery in use. Having a high efficiency separation system means that the air passing through the filter is

99% clean of waste, maintaining a high airflow for top performance. The filter has a 1 micron filtration performance and is fitted with a simple manual cleaning system. A manometer gauge gives an easy visual performance reference. The large waste bin 105 litres and is easy to remove and empty. Fitted with sturdy castors, this extractor is quite mobile so is easy to move from machine to machine.

However, with a 150mm inlet it also lends itself to be fitted to a permanent ducting system. Able to run from a standard

13A plug, it is an attractive proposition for a small trade workshop or a keen amateur in a home workshop.

This larger “Trade” rated extractor is also compact in size and is able to extract from larger, higher waste volume

producing machines. Sharing the same high efficiency air flow system ensures high, consistent performance. Over

99% of waste is separated from the air stream before the air is passed through the 1 micron filter; a simple manual filter cleaning system keeps the filter clean. There is a manometer fitted to give a quick, visual indication of the filter performance. The 155 litre waste container is easily detached from the machine and has castors to allow easy mobility. This machine is fitted with wheels for mobility, but we would suggest the best way to get the most benefit from this machine is to connect it to a permanent ducting system.

The 180mm inlet would allow a multiple ported system to be used. Quiet and unobtrusive in use, this would be a good choice in many workshops. N.B. 16A supply required

Trade Woodturning Lathes

AT1416VS

Axminster drive centre

LED speed read-out in rpm

Quick and easy camlock clamps

Axminster revolving tailstock centre

The AT1416VS utilises the very reliable inverter technology usually found on much

larger machines. Electronic variable speed is a desirable feature for woodturners, enabling fine tuning of speed to suit larger diameters or out of balance workpieces. A three step polyvee pulley system allows three speed ranges which ensure maximum torque at all speeds. A versatile magnetic switch unit can be placed at a convenient position on the lathe to suit the work in hand and incorporates on/off buttons, a speed control knob and a forward and reverse switch. An LED digital read-out of the lathe speed in RPM is a useful feature and 400mm(16”) between centres and a 350mm(14”) swing over the bed capacity is unusual on a lathe this compact. Spindle indexing is achieved in 15° segments by insertion of a magnetic dowel pin.

Threaded holes (3/8”x16 UNC) are provided at each corner of the lathe for bench mounting. Tool post diameter 1” (25.4mm). Supplied with four prong Axminster drive centre, Axminster

revolving tailstock centre, 3” faceplate and a knock out bar.

AT1628VS

The AT1628VS is an excellent addition to our Trade Series range and we are expecting it to be a very popular choice among dis-

cerning woodturners. We are so impressed with its quality and performance that we have decided to equip our Skill Centre with several of these lathes. Supplied as a bench top model with the option to purchase a leg stand if required, the lathe and leg stand are of heavy cast iron construction to minimise vibration. It features electronic variable speed supplied via an inverter with two speed ranges for maximum torque at low speeds. The advantage of variable speed is that you can fine tune the speed of the lathe to the work in hand. This is especially important when turning large or out of balance workpieces and it is so convenient for fast speed changes. Spindle indexing is provided at 10° intervals and a magnetic control console with start/stop, speed control and forward/reverse can be conveniently positioned for the work in hand. Everything about the lathe feels just right, with cam-lock action of the tool rest banjo and tailstock, all controls work smoothly and effortlessly. A swivelling headstock can be very useful, especially if bench mounting the lathe but it will also slide along to the tailstock end of the bed. This allows the turning of larger diameter bowls and platters off the end of the bed and increases the capacity considerably. A 460mm bed extension kit is available as an optional extra and this can be bolted onto either end of the lathe bed. If you have the lathe fitted to the cast iron leg stand it can be attached in a lower position offering an impressive 875mm swing over the bed.

This is achieved by moving the tool rest banjo down onto the bed extension and fitting the tool rest extension post supplied with the bed extension kit. If you are serious about your woodturning and want a lathe that offers excellent performance, features and value, this lathe would be a sound choice. Supplied with Axminster four prong drive centre, Axminster revolving tailstock centre, 150mm (6”)

faceplate and a knockout bar.
