On which keyboard instruments can I install a PNOscan sensor strip? The PNOscan was designed in such a manner that it can be installed in virtually any piano. For most acoustic pianos the installation process is straightforward. Occasionally with pianos, and more frequently with organs and other keyboards, a successful installation will require some creativity on the installer's part.

Acoustic pianos: There must be enough room between the bottom of the key and the highest portion of the key frame so that the key does not hit the sensor housing. Fortunately, for most acoustic pianos this is not a problem. More than likely you will have to shim the sensor strip higher.

Manual is geared for piano technicians versed in piano nomenclature. It is recommended that the system be installed by a QRS trained certified technician.

PNOscan

Congratulations on your purchase of the QRS PNOscan key sensor / MIDI system. The PNOscan system represents the best value and highest performance key sensing / MIDI transmit system available today.

What does the PNOscan do? The PNOscan is a simple MIDI interface for your acoustic piano. The

PNOscan allows you to use your piano as a MIDI controller. The PNOscan MIDI OUT jack can be connected to any synthesizer, sequencer, or computer having a MIDI IN jack.

With the PNOscan system installed under the keys of your keyboard instrument, you will enjoy the great benefit of the latest high tech designs. Benefits such as absolute high resolution key sampling, virtually no mechanical contact with keys or action, highly accurate DSP algorithms for outstanding performance reproduction and seamless integration into the QRS product line.

Please read through these installation instructions prior to attempting the installation. Taking the time to understand this product before starting and exercising care during the installation will promote immediate success.

Please unpack your kit and report any damage or missing parts immediately. The item list below represents a complete kit.

Brief Description

Key Sensor Strip: The key sensor strip is a series of optical sensors, one for each key. Each optical sensor has one small plastic "tower." The tower transmits and receives a beam of infrared light . As the key moves it gradually changes the intensity of the amount of light detected. The sensor strip is mounted to the key frame, positioned so that the bottom of each key reliably reflects the light. Since it is optical absolutely nothing effects the touch of the key.

The travel of the key is not restricted by the sensor strip - each key still has the same range of motion it had before. The complete sensor strip consists of four printed circuit (PC) boards inserted in a plastic extrusion.

Pedal Sensors: Although PNOscan was designed to detect the movement of all three pedals, only two Pedal Sensors are supplied with the PNOscan system. The single connector sensor is used to detect motion of damper tray when the sustain pedal is depressed. The double connector sensor detects the movement of the key frame when the soft shift pedal is depressed.

Transition Box: The PNOscan system uses the same keyboard and pedal sensing mechanisms. All QRS products transmit and receive MIDI data, allowing the user to connect with external synthesizers and sequencers.

Pre Installation Checkout

PRE-INSTALLATION CHECKOUT

The purpose of the Pre-Installation checkout is to verify that no damage occurred in shipping. The installer will then know for certain that all of the components are functioning properly, and that any problems which arise later would be associated with the physical installation itself and not due to faulty components.

NOTE: When connecting the ribbon cables to one another or to the Transition Box, observe the black stripe orientation on the cables. All stripes must be on the same side of the cable. When connecting two cables together, the stripe will be on the top of one cable while on the bottom of the other.

PNOscan Sensor Checkout: (Follow along with images on the next page)

1. Mount the plastic extrusion containing the key sensor boards to the wooden base provided.

See Figure A on page 8.

2. Connect one end of the 24” “sensor strip to Transition Box” cable to the “key sensor strip” cable. Black strip of each cable on the same edge.

3. Connect the other end of the 24” “sensor strip to Transition Box” cable to the “Keyboard” socket of the Transition Box. Black stripe of ribbon cable the toward center of the box.

4. Assemble the two pedal sensor boards as shown and connect them to the “Pedal” socket of the

Transition Box. See Figure D on page 8.

5. Connect the AC adapter to power. Plug the other end of the adapter into the Transition Box.

6. Test the key sensor strip by powering on the unit. The “Keyboard” light on the Transition Box blinks slowly. If the MIDI sensor strip is not plugged in, or plugged in backwards, the light will blink rapidly. The LEDs on the sensor strips should be blinking at the same rate as the

Transition Box LEDs. If not check connections between boards.

7. Power Down by holding the power button for at least two seconds.

8. Hold the Keyboard (+) button in while powering up. Keep holding for at least 3 seconds and wait until the keyboard button light flickers rapidly, then release the button. Wait a few seconds for the light to stop flickering. The system is now in the calibration/setup mode.

9. Hold a small wooden object about 3/16" above the first optical sensors for about 3 seconds.

Work your way up the sensor strip until all sensors were momentarily covered. This procedure tricks the system into believing it was setup under a keyboard. Power off the Transition Box.

10. Power on the Transition Box. Repeat step 9 above watching the green LED lights on the key scan boards and on the left most green LED of the 3 button group on the interface. The green

LED's should flicker at a random rate relative to the key tail movement You can verify operation of all sensors by going over each key.

Installation Checkout

Step 8: Hold the Keyboard (+) button in while powering up. Keep holding for at least 3 seconds past the power up button release. The system will enter setup mode.

Step 10: Power on the Transition Box and repeat step 9. Watch the green LEDs on the

Key Sensor Boards and the MIDI

Channel/Set Up light on the Transition Box.

The green LED's should flicker at a random rate relative to the key tail movement You can verify operation of all sensors by going over each key.

Remove the fall board.

Remove the check blocks and key slip.

During the installation process you will be mounting a pedal sensor board and shim to the treble end of the piano, behind the shift return spring, to detect the action shift when the soft pedal has been depressed. It may be helpful to take a preliminary measurement at this time before the action is removed.

Depress the soft shift pedal and scribe a mark onto the keybed where the treble end of the key frame has stopped.

Measure the distance from the mark to the inside of the treble rim.

Make note of this measurement. ___________

Remove the action and place it on a work bench.

Remove the stack and put in a safe place.

Remove the keys.

Mounting The Key Sensor Strip

Unplug the key sensor strip from the Transition Box. Place the key sensor strip assembly (key sensor strips in the plastic extrusion mounted to the wooden base) on the key frame as close to the front rail as possible and with the cable extending toward the treble end of the piano.

Reconnect the key sensor strip to the Transition Box and power the system on. Notice the flashing green LED on each of the four key sensor boards.

Place keys 1 and 2 on the piano action. Move the key sensor strip assembly, bass to treble, so that the green LED on the first key sensor board can be seen when looking down through the two keys. This will align the optical sensors on the first key sensor board.

Using the ten 6x5/8” screws mount the key sensor strip assembly to the key frame. Drill 1/16" holes through the backer strip key frame straps. Drill the holes 1/8" in from the edges of the backer strip. Drill holes on both sides of the backer strip which will provide two hold down screws per key frame strap.

Place the following keys on the key frame: 23-24, 45-46, and 67-68. Look down between each of these key sets for the blinking LED. If it is necessary to adjust any of the boards to position the LEDs, remove the silver tape holding the boards to the plastic extrusion and slide the boards apart. Start at the base end and work toward the treble. (Do not separate the boards by more than .0625" 1/16"). If some of the notes don’t record correctly it may be necessary to adjust the bass treble position slightly.

Depress a sharp key so that the felt compresses slightly to represent normal play. With the sharp key depressed measure the distance from the top of the optical sensor to the bottom of the key. Check this distance for all three sharp keys. Use a shim to raise or route out to lower the key sensor strip assembly so that the distance between the optical sensor and the bottom of the key is within the optimal goal distance [.060” to .100” or (1/16” to 7/64” - about 2 credit cards)]. See Figure B & C on page 11. The optical key sensors work best when they see a total key travel distance between 1/4” and 3/8”.

Secure the key sensor strip assembly to the key frame, replace all of the keys and the stack assembly.

Perform the pre-installation checkout procedures on pages 7 and 8 to verify that everything is still functioning properly with the action assembled.

Mounting The Key Sensor Strip

With the key sensor strip attached to the key frame put three sharp keys in place, bass-center-treble.

1/16” - 7/64” (.060” to .100:) with Key Dipped

With the sharp key depressed measure the distance from top of the optical sensor to bottom of the key.

Goal Distance = .060” to .100” (1/16”-7/64”). About the thickness as two credit cards.

The optical key sensors work best when they see a total key travel distance between 1/4” and 3/8”.

If the backer strip needs to be reduced in order to meet the correct height of the shim, you’ll have to route the backer strip. Mark the sections of the backer strip that need to be routed. Route so that they sit in the key frame as below.

The sensor strip ribbon cable must exit to treble end of the keyboard. Drill a hole through the treble end of the belly rail and pass this cable through to the PNOscan Transition box.

Mounting The Pedal Sensors

The PNOscan system is designed to sense the movement of all three pedals. At this this time we are only supplying parts and instructions for the sustain and the soft shift pedals.

This section of the manual describes the installation of the PNOscan pedal sensors in a grand pianos.

Keep in mind that these instructions are general and are not cast in stone. If a particular installation presents you with an opportunity to mount the pedal sensor in a better location, by all means do so.

The Pedal Sensors are optical, similar to the keys sensors. By creating a flag effect or a flag in some cases you can trigger the sensing of the pedals from inside the piano.

Mount the Pedal Sensor boards to their respective Chassis.

Sustain: Belly rail - treble end.

Attach the single connector Pedal Sensor Board Assembly to the

“L” bracket as shown.

Screw the bracket to the treble end of the belly rail so that the optical sensors are positioned directly above the damper tray.

Bend the “L” bracket so that the distance between the optical sensor and the top of the damper tray is within the range shown when the sustain pedal is depressed. We suggest cutting a wood shim to use as a feeler gauge for these measurements.

Soft Shift:

Use the measurement taken on page 9 to determine the thickness of the shim used to mount the soft shift Pedal Sensor Assembly.

The thickness of the Pedal Sensor Board Assembly (from the optical sensor to the back of the chassis) equals .286” or 9/32”. The optimal trigger distance of the sensor equals .150” or 5/32”. This totals a distance of .436” or 7/16”. Subtract this total from the measurement taken from page 9. This will be the thickness of the shim to use to attach the board to the rim. Once the key frame is in place a small piece of self adhesive material may attached to the key frame to make final adjustments.

Using the two 12” cable extensions provided, connect the two Pedal

Sensor Assemblies as shown in

Figure “D” at right.

Mount Transition Box & Replace Action

Mount the Transition Box under the piano on the treble side directly behind the rear of the keybed.

This position will allow the Ancho/Petine to Transition Box MIDI connection to be made without using any extension cables.

Connect the AC Adapter to an un-switched outlet to provide continuous power to the Transition Box.

Connect the other end of the AC Adapter to the VCD jack of the Transition Box.

Connect the MIDI Adapter cables from your QRS Ancho or Petine to the PNOscan transition box.

MIDI OUT of the transition box to the MIDI IN of Ancho/Petine and the MIDI IN of the transition box to the MIDI OUT of Ancho/Petine. See below.

Drill a 1/2” hole in the treble side of the belly rail.

Feed the 24” Sensor Strip to Transition Box cable through the hole and connect it to the “Keyboard” socket of the Transition Box. Clamp this cable to the treble side of the piano rim ready to connect to the Key Sensor Strip cable when the action is in place. (Make sure the mounting location does not interfere with the operation of the fallboard or the action.)

Feed the Pedal Sensor ribbon cable though the 1/2” hole and connect it to the “Pedal” socket of the Transition Box.

Place the piano action in the piano and connect the ribbon cable from the Key Sensor Strip to the

24” cable attached to the treble rim. Align the black strips to the same side of the cable.

When you are finished, secure the wiring with the tie wraps provided. Make sure any slack is left underneath the piano.

The MIDI IN and MIDI OUT connections between the transition box and the Ancho or Petine controller provides for automatic

“Mode” selection of the transition box. The Mode changes depending on the status of the Ancho or Petine controller.

Sensor Test And Calibration

The system should be recalibrated anytime the piano is moved.

Test the key sensor strip by (1) powering on the unit. The (2) “Keyboard” light on the Transition Box blinks slowly. If the MIDI sensor strip is not plugged in, or is plugged in backwards, the light will blink rapidly. The small green LEDs on the each of the sensor strip boards (look between keys:

1-2, 23-24, 45-46, and 67-68) should be blinking at the same rate as the

Transition Box LEDs. If not check connections between the boards.

Press and Hold the (4) Keyboard (+) button in while (5) powering on. Keep holding for at least 3 seconds wait to release the keyboard button until the keyboard button's light flickers rapidly, then release the button. The system will enter calibration mode.

(6) Play and Hold the first bass key. (7)

Release the key when the MIDI LED lights.

Repeat for all 88 keys.

This completes the calibration process.

Play each key. The MIDI Channel/Set Up LED on the transition box will flicker when a key is depressed and again when the key is released. You can verify operation of all sensors playing each key. If MIDI LED does not flicker when pressing key, revisit the height and left/right alignment of the sensor strip.

The left-to-right “alignment” LED’s should be seen, from above, between keys: 1-2, 23-24, 45-46, and 67-68

These LED’s on the sensor strips should be blinking at the same rate as the transition box. If not check connections between boards.

The “MUTE/Keyboard +” button LED will indicate the status of the system as follows:

Mute mode - Light flashes steadily. Stops MIDI output from PNOscan and sends an “all events off” message to all devices.

Record Mode - Light blinks at a 1 second pace. MIDI output is optimized for Pianomation acoustic record and playback.

Play Along (Soundcard) Mode - Light blinks twice then pauses. MIDI output is optimized for playback through the Ancho or Petine soundcard. Useful for silent practice mode or connection to outboard MIDI devices.

Pedal Sensor Calibration

Power the PNOscan Transition Box off.

Power the unit on

All three lights on the pedal sensors are green and light up.

The red power LED will light and the green “Keyboard +” LED will begin blinking.

Hold the pedal button down for at least 3 seconds until you see its LED blink rapidly. You are now in pedal adjust mode.

Depress the Sustain pedal so that the dampers just raise up off of the strings, hold for 1 second and then release. Depress the Soft Shift pedal, hold for 1 second and then release.

Press the pedal button on the Transition Box and release.

Now press pedals in same order again - this time two things will be seen.

The Transition Box LED light will reflect that there is MIDI activity.

Pedal Light will stay on for as long as the pedal is depressed.

Press and hold the red power button until the transition box powers OFF to SAVE the new settings.

Calibration will be lost if power is removed before manual “shutdown”.

PNOscan Electronics Limited Warranty

QRS Music Technologies, Inc. (“QRS”) warrants to you for the Warranty Period that there are no defects in the materials of this Product (as identified at the end of this warranty certificate). The “Warranty Period” expires (except as explained below) Two (2) years from the date of your purchase of the Product. In order to determine the date of your purchase of the Product, you will need to provide to us a credit card receipt, a purchase agreement, a sales slip, a warranty registration or some other form of proof that you are the original purchaser and the date of your purchase of the Product.

If you are not able to provide us with some form of proof of purchase date, the Warranty Period will be a shorter period (the “Shorter Warranty Period”) which is two years from the date that your dealer purchased the

Product from QRS. If you cannot provide a proof of purchase date, you may contact us in the manner described below and we will assist you in determining the date that your dealer purchased the Product from us and determining the Shorter Warranty Period. This is a warranty is for parts only and does not include shipping or labor.

This warranty does not apply to any accessories you may have purchased with the Product and does not apply to any piano or components of the piano with which the Product is used or any Piano in which the Product is installed. In addition, this warranty does not cover scratches, dents or other defects in the cosmetic finish of the

Product.

The warranty is issued solely to the original purchaser of the Product. THIS WARRANTY IS NOT TRANSFERABLE. If, during the Warranty Period, parts incorporated in this Product are found to be defective in material or workmanship, and the original purchaser provides Purchase Documents to QRS, then QRS or its authorized dealer will provide replacement parts without charge. We may, at our discretion, provide reconditioned parts or assemblies as warranty replacements. You as the original purchaser will be responsible to pay labor costs incurred in connection with any repair.

LIMITATION IN CONNECTION WITH OBSOLETE PRODUCTS

If at the time you make a claim pursuant to this warranty, we no longer manufacture or sell the same model of Product, we may, at our discretion, rather than repair or replace defective parts in the Product, offer to sell you a more current version of a similar Product. If we offer to sell you a more current model of the Product, you will be responsible to pay the difference between the Manufacture’s Suggested Retail Price (“MSRP”) of the more current version of a similar Product and the price you paid for the Product you purchased. If you choose not to accept such offer, we will have no further obligations pursuant to this warranty.

THIS WARRANTY IS IN LIEU OF ANY OTHER WARRANTY, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, MADE BY THE MANUFACTURER IN

CONNECTION WITH THIS PRODUCT. INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, WARRANTIES OR MERCHANTABILITY OR

FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. TO THE EXTENT ALLOWED BY THE LAW, QRS SHALL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE

FOR LOSS OF THE PRODUCT, LOSS OF TIME, INCONVENIENCE, COMMERCIAL LOSS, SPECIAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL

DAMAGES, EVEN IF THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

This warranty gives you specific legal rights. Some states provide other rights, and some states do not allow excluding or limiting liability for incidental or consequential damage. Consequently, the limitations and exclusions in this warranty may not apply to you. In addition, some jurisdictions have consumer protection rules, regulations and statutes that may apply to you.

Exclusions

There is no express warranty on the Product and this warranty is void if:

1) You did not purchase this Product from an authorized Pianomation reseller

2) This Product has been serviced, modified or tampered with by anyone other than an QRS Authorized Service

Representative

3) The name, trademark or serial number has been modified, defaced or removed from the product,

4) This Product has been damaged as a result of abuse, abnormal force or strain, failure to reasonably maintain and protect, modification, accident or exposure to extreme temperature or humidity,

5) Parts, supplies or other accessories which have not been approved by QRS have been used with this Product,

6) Radio frequency interference is generated by uncertified and/or illegal equipment,

7) This Product has been moved or delivered without reasonable preparation and packaging or

8) QRS reasonably determines, after inspection that there has been modification of this Product which adversely affects the reliability of the product or component.

Owner’s Responsibility

In order to have rights under this warranty, you have the following responsibilities:

1) Retain your proof of purchase and purchase date and send in your Warranty Registration Card

2) Notify QRS or any authorized dealer of any warranty claim within ten (10) days after discovery and provide a detailed explanation of the problem.

General

If any provision herein shall be unlawful, void or for any reason unenforceable, then that provision shall be deemed severable from this warranty certificate and shall not affect the validity of and enforceability of the remaining provisions.

QRS reserves the right to make changes in design and/or improvements to its products without any obligation to retrofit products previously manufactured.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR OBTAINING WARRANTY SERVICE

1) If you cannot provide proof of purchase, contact QRS at 800-247-6557 and we will attempt to determine the date on which your dealer purchased the Product and assist you in determining the Shorter Warranty Period.

For warranty service, contact the dealer from whom you purchased the product, or your nearest dealer.

2) If no dealer is near you, contact QRS by phone at 800-247-6557.

3) Do not ship the product without prior written Return Authorization from QRS. Do not attempt to repair or disassemble the product yourself.

4) Please record your model number and serial number and your date of purchase below for your records. Keep this information with your proof of purchase in case your product requires service. Do not dispose of the warranty after it expires. In the event your product ever requires service, these instructions should be helpful in enabling you to obtain proper service.

This product, when installed as indicated in the Installation Manual, meets FCC requirements. Modifications not expressly approved by QRS Music Technologies, Inc. may void your authority, granted by the FCC, to use this product.

2. IMPORTANT: When connecting this product to accessories and/or another product use only high quality shielded cables. Cables supplied with this product MUST be used. Follow all installation instructions. Failure to follow instructions could void your FCC authorization to use this product in the United States of America.

3. NOTE: This product has been designed to comply with the requirements listed in the FCC Regulations, Part 15 for Class “B” digital devices. Compliance with these requirements provides a reasonable level of assurance that your use of this product in a residential environment will not result in harmful interference with other electronic devices. This equipment generates/uses radio frequencies and, if not installed and used according to the instructions found in the Installation Manual, may cause interference harmful to the operation of other electronic devices. Compliance with FCC regulations does not guarantee that interference will not occur in all installations. If this product is found to be the source of interference, which can be determined by turning the unit

“OFF” and “ON”, please try to eliminate the problem by using one of the following measures:

• Relocate either this product or the device that is being affected by the interference.

INSTRUCTIONS PERTAINING TO A RISK OF FIRE, ELECTRIC SHOCK, OR INJURY TO PERSONS

The lightning flash with arrowhead symbol, within an equilateral triangle, is intended to alert the user to the presence of un-insulated “dangerous voltage” within the product’s enclosure that may be of sufficient magnitude to constitute a risk of electric shock to persons.

The exclamation point within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert the user to the presence of important operating and maintenance (servicing) instructions in the literature accompanying the product.

GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS: This product must be grounded. If it should malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock. This product is equipped with a cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances.

DANGER - Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock. Check with a qualified electrician or serviceman if you are in doubt as to whether the product is properly grounded. Do not modify the plug provided with the product. If it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.
