The F-Series, consisting of the F5 and F7 active nearfield
monitors, were designed to the same exacting professional standards as the ADAM AX- and SX-Series professional monitors. Their development was focused on the
essence of a good monitor: Precise and natural sound

The F-Series monitors offer all the features you want to

a broad frequency range for the F5 (52Hz to 50kHz) and

Since its introduction, the F5 has already established itself as a highly
successful entry-level monitor. Smaller project studios and budgetconscious home studio owners can especially benefit from the ADAM

Two discrete class A/B amplifiers with a total output of 50 Watts
RMS/70 Watts Music drive the monitor. This helps the F5 to provide a

Near-/Midfield Monitors
AX-Series
The AX-Series from ADAM Audio provides you with a
wide range of monitors for different applications. Their
excellent price-performance ratio makes them suitable
for professional studio applications as well as upscale
home recording.
Sophisticated design, easy handling
Many technical innovations in our high end SX-Series
are also used in the AX models. The chamfered upper
corners of the sturdy cabinet fronts minimize edge diffraction so that phase cancellation is not an issue. The
speaker interior is equipped with a special fleece that
prevents disturbing internal resonances as well as ensuring a better bass reflex tuning. The power switch and
volume control are easily accessible on the front panel
for greater ease of use. The front-firing bass ports are
very useful as well, allowing the monitors to be set up
closer to a wall if need be.
Rigid woofer materials
While the bass/mid woofer of the A3X is made of carbon
fiber – an extremely resistant material – the woofers of
all other AX models are built using a sandwich construction of woven carbon and glass fiber in conjunction with
the synthetic material Rohacell. These three materials
vary with respect to their physical density, but used in
combination they provide an ultra-lightweight yet extremely rigid material with excellent transient response.

The perfect combo: A/B and PWM amplifiers
All models of the AX-Series feature two discrete amplifiers: an A/B amplifier that functions very quickly within
its broad frequency range drives the X-ART tweeter. In
the A5X, A7X, A8X and A77X monitors, the bass/midrange woofers are each driven by powerful and highly
efficient pulse-width modulated (PWM) amplifiers that do
not require additional heat sinks and are more reliable
and durable than other amplifiers.
Distinct adjustments to room acoustics
The ‚Tweeter gain‘ function is a part of each AX monitor’s
basic configuration and lets you raise or lower the level
of the high frequencies by up to 4dB. Beyond that, shelving filters allow further adaptation to room acoustics with
the A5X, A7X, A8X and A77X. The low shelf filter allows
smooth control of the lower frequencies below 300 Hz
from -6 dB to +6 dB, the high shelf EQ is introduced at
2.5 kHz with the same levels from -6 dB to +6 dB.
Dynamic high frequency reproduction with the X-ART
tweeter
It goes without saying that all models of the AX-Series
are equipped with our X-ART tweeter that is handmade
in Berlin. The tweeter works according to our proprietary
X-ART principle, based on a slim, pleated foil working as
the tweeter‘s diaphragm (see also page 52). The precise
transient response and capability of reproducing the
finest sonic details make the AX-Series monitors superior
working tools.

A5X
Particularly interesting for the quality-conscious user on a tight budget is the most compact monitor of the AX-Series, the A3X. Specially
designed for studio environments with limited space, the A3X easily
meets professional requirements. Three-dimensional spatial representation, a controlled, deep bass response and accurate sound reproduction, especially in the critical areas between 200 and 400 Hz, make it
the first choice for smaller, even mobile studio setups.
With the A3X, analytical listening is possible without taking away musical enjoyment. Its excellent transient response and ability to easily play

The A5X is popular among professionals working in television studios
and remote broadcast vans. The A5X can also be found in numerous
home/project studios around the world. Its open, powerful sound makes
the A5X a trustworthy and useful tool for multimedia applications as
well.
Like all models of the AX-Series, the A5X is equipped with ADAM‘s
proprietary X-ART tweeter. One 5.5“ bass/midrange woofer works below
2.5kHz and is driven by a 1.5“ voice coil and a powerful 50 Watt PWM
amplifier. Its acoustic qualities give you a clear picture of the smallest
changes in your mix and the sonic results. Despite all that it does, the
A5X is not fatiguing in long studio sessions.

A7X
The A7X is ADAM’s best selling nearfield monitor. It is one of the most
balanced and versatile speakers currently on the market. The X-ART
tweeter produces detailed, uncompressed highs and upper mids without being tiring over long listening periods. Despite its compact housing, the bass response is powerful and precise.
The tweeter is driven by a 50 Watt A/B amplifier and the bass/midwoofer by a 100 Watt PWM amplifier. This achieves a very clean and
nuanced reproduction of the midrange frequencies with a seamless
transition in the crossover from the 7“ woofer, which operates in the

The A8X adds to the AX-Series as a unique model because its power
and radiation characteristics allow it to be used as both a nearfield
and midfield monitor. It represents a particularly attractive entry-level
model for midfield monitoring which offers transparent reproduction of
higher frequencies, clear mids and an excellent transient response.
The extra large, front-positioned bass reflex ports are perfectly matched
with the bass/midrange driver that has a 1.5“ voice coil. Thus the A8X

The A77X is a horizontally designed monitor that combines all of the
technical innovations in the AX-Series. Due to its powerful, compression-free sound reproduction and excellent radiation characteristics, it
is suitable both for nearfield and midfield monitoring.
The special feature of the A77X is its 2½-way system. Both 7” woofers
start to work together at 38 Hz and at 400 Hz one woofer fades out
and only the second woofer continues to operate in the midrange up to
3 kHz. This prevents interferences and possible phase cancellation in
the critical midrange. Even though frequency transitions and potential
distortions lie outside these areas, the human ear is particularly sensitive to midrange frequencies.
Especially noteworthy in the A77X is the extremely wide stereo foundation and brilliant stereo imaging. Treble and mids are reproduced with
three-dimensional realism and the lows are, as expected from a double
woofer design, massive without compromising on precision.

The SX-Series offers monitors designed and built for nocompromise professional use. ADAM’s experience based
on many years of intense research and development in
the field of electro-acoustics combined with selected,
high-quality electronic components and materials results
in these top class studio monitors. An excellent transient
response, clear sound quality and a broad versatility have
made the SX-Series monitors coveted tools in recording
studios around the world.
Powerful amplifiers and HexaCone woofers – the
perfect combination
High-performance PWM amplifiers drive all of the woofers in SX-Series monitors. Due to their high efficiency of
over 90%, these amplifiers have less power loss and are
thus more loadable and durable than classic A/B amplifiers. They are also more broadband with additional sonic
benefits in the treble range. ADAM has developed a
special low-noise 50 Watt amplifier for S1X, S2X, S3X
and S4X models with a flat frequency response up to
300 kHz to drive the X-ART tweeter. In conjunction with
the high-efficiency tweeters, this enables the SX-Series
models to produce both accurate and effortless highfrequency reproduction.
The cone speakers in the SX monitors are all made from
HexaCone, an aramid-plastic core with honeycomb
structure coated on both sides with Kevlar. This ensures
maximum strength with minimum weight, resulting in a

X-ART reveals the finest sonic details
Every model of the SX-Series features ADAM’s unique
‚hand-made in Berlin‘ tweeter with our proprietary X-ART
technology. In addition, the main monitors (S5X-H,
S5X-V, S6X and S7A Mk2) are also equipped with X-ART
midrange drivers (see also page 52). The precise transient
response as well as the driver‘s ability to reproduce the
finest sonic details make ADAM monitors uncompromising
and effective tools. SX cabinets are built with generously
rounded edges and a durable plastic coating. The former
minimizes distracting reflections while the latter provides
extra protection for everyday use in the studio.
Extensive room adaptive options
A variety of control options are available in the SX-Series
models for extensive adjustments to room acoustics. The
S1X features low and high shelving EQs as well as the
tweeter gain and volume control. Models S2X through S5X
also feature a front-mounted control panel (see also page
34). In addition to a standby switch, two LEDs to indicate
clipping and the status of the optional D/A-converter are
located here. The S6X and S7A Mk2 models have an even
more extensive set of available controls.

A 24 Bit/192 kHz DAC plug-in card is available for SX
models (S2X and higher). Beyond that, the EA-SX external
amplifier lets you flush mount the S2X, S3X, S4X and S5X
models. The respective external amplifiers are mounted
together with the control unit in a 19-inch rack. All electronic parts and the setting options are identical to the
amplifiers used in the standard SX models.

The S2X is designed as nearfield monitor for use in small and mediumsized control rooms. The 7.5-inch HexaCone woofer is driven by a sophisticated magnetic system whose large linear cone excursion realized by
the 2“ voice coil makes for excellent dynamics of sonic events.
The impulse response of the S2X is accurate within the entire frequency
range, the stereo image well balanced and the accurate placement of
individual sound events is problem-free. Distracting noises can be precisely located; the generous sweet spot remains stable even when you

Despite the compact case the bass sounds big and precise, the 250

The horizontally designed S4X-H midfield monitor combines the X-ART

Larger monitors tend to compromise the overall sound with too much

The S4X-V has been designed for vertical positioning and includes the
same X-ART tweeter and 5“ HexaCone midrange driver found in the
S4X-H. The resulting similarity in sonic characteristics allows combinations of different S4X versions in larger multi-channel applications. The
S4X-V features one 12“ woofer alongside the 5“ HexaCone midrange
unit made of the same material. This driver was specially designed to
provide optimum results in a bass-reflex enclosure with electronic correction. The dynamic features of the S4X-V are exceptional throughout
the entire frequency range: extreme transient-like noise events such as

The S5X-V is a 4-way main monitor with advanced dynamic capability
that offers musical spatial representation at the highest level. It combines the X-ART midrange driver and tweeter with a 7.5“ bass/midrange
driver and one 12“ woofer with HexaCone membranes. The 12“ woofer
practically acts as a built-in subwoofer working in the range from 25 Hz
to 85 Hz. Equipped with a 3“ voice coil and a large cone travel, it confidently masters its frequency range thanks to its generously sized driver.

Control panel with ‘Virtual Ground Semiconductor Switch’
Technology
Another innovation we present within the SX-Series is a control panel
with ‘Virtual Ground Semiconductor Switch’ technology. That gives you
many different sophisticated controls as well as an accuracy and repeatability of the values that has been unknown in the analogue domain
so far: whatever value you re-chose, you will get it to within a <0,005dB
accuracy! These panels are used in the models S2X to S5X.
The rotary step switches on these panels are designed to switch discrete resistors within a semiconductor resistor network that is located
on the amplifier module in the back of the monitors. They allow for
precise settings, which are much more accurate than usual potentiometers. These exact settings are a true advantage for every sound
engineer who wants to make sure that switching back from position ‘b’
to position ‘a’ is exactly the same setting each and every time. Furthermore, there is no potentiometer-scratching and no switch-scratching
noise because there is no audio signal at the panel itself – the music
signals do not move back and forth between the amplifier section and
the front panel.
The controls at a glance:
• Input sensitivity is handled by two controls: one for coarse settings,
-20dB to +8dB in 4dB steps, and one for fine tuning in 0.5dB steps,
ranging from -1.5dB to 2dB.
• There are two controls for the lower frequencies: One is an equalizer at 80Hz that can boost up the response by 6dB in 1dB steps,
the second is a shelf filter that allows you to progressively alter the
frequencies below 150Hz in a ± 4dB maximum range at 2Hz in 1dB
increments.
• High frequencies can also be adjusted by two different controls:
The first influences the tweeter ± 2dB in 0,5dB steps, the second is
a shelf filter that works for high frequencies above 6kHz in a ± 4dB
maximum range at 20kHz in 1dB increments.
External Amplifier Unit EA-SX
Precision D/A Converter
For the models S2X, S3X, S4X and S5X ADAM Audio offers the option
of an external amplifier in order to make flush mounting of these monitors easier. Connecting the mounted SX monitors becomes very convenient and space-saving thanks to recessed Speakon connectors on the
rear of the monitors.
In order to integrate the S2X, S3X, S4X and S5X directly in a digital
signal chain, ADAM offers the optional DA-SX Digital/Analog converter.
The plug-in converter card installs easily into the back of the amplifier
module and is designed to handle both AES/EBU and SPDIF signals (via
RCA or TOSLINK).
The respective external amp units and their control panels are mounted
in a 19“ (3U) rack enclosure. The electronic circuitry and the controls of
these units are the same that can be found in all base models of the SX
monitor range with fitted amplification.
Controls and indicators:
To connect the monitors to the external amp unit you must use the
ADAM Audio ready-made Speakon cables that can be ordered in either
5 or 10 meter lengths.
• The middle LED row indicates the active digital input, the lower row
shows the selected signal channel and the use of World Clock.
• The selected digital signal is always present at one XLR jack. This
offers a convenient way of chaining up the digital signal to the
second monitor in a stereo setup.
• Level attenuation: An analogue 5-step attenuator can be switched in
before the DAC‘s output.
• THD+N @ 1kHz, 0dBFS, 24bit: ≤ -104dB = 0,0006 % at all sample
rates, bandwith: 20kHz, (acc. to AES17)
• THD+N @ 1kHz, -10dBFS: ≤ -98dB = 0,0013 % at all sample rates,

‘Mode’ selects the input, the channel to be converted and World Clock
synchronization via the World Clock input.

S6X / S7A Mk2
The S6X and S7A Mk2 main monitors are designed for
large control rooms and film studios. They use a symmetrical concept to increase the realistic reproduction of
ADAM monitors to higher sound pressure levels. ADAM
has avoided the typical overloading of the bass range
that can often be found in main monitors. A wide horizontal radiation characteristic and moderate vertical beaming are crucial factors to minimize the impact of ceiling
and floor reflections and achieve neutral sound reproduction at high volumes.
Extended D‘Appolito design
A total of seven individual speakers were arrayed so that
gradual transitions could be made possible given the size
of the cabinet. In addition, we chose a horizontal symmetry that can be described as an extended D’Appolito
configuration. This kind of design combined with suitable
transition frequencies and filter slopes results in radiation patterns that lead to very consistent reproduction
characteristics in the horizontal center position. At the
same time, vertical dispersion is reduced so that reflections from the ceiling, floor or mixing console are greatly
reduced. Thus, so called ‘early reflections’ have less
chance to interfere, which leads to significantly better
stereo imaging and a more three-dimensional sound.
Amplification
An active-built complex, large top-class monitor has not
yet been achieved because of the challenge presented
by the heat generation of the high power amplifiers used
in this type of device. In recent years, PWM (Pulse Width
Modulation) amplifier technology had significantly improved in that only a fifth of the generated heat has to
be dissipated – a real breakthrough in terms of reliability
and durability. This allows the S6X and the S7A Mk2 to
be flush mounted into the studio walls, since all the heat
is emitted through the front of the cabinet and the heat
sink temperatures remain moderate. Together with the
built-in protection circuits the low, constant temperatures of these amplifiers result in reliable performance
not possible with traditional AB amplifiers.
Control panel (S6X and S7A Mk2)
In addition to the input sensitivity that can be adapted in
the range of ±10 dB, there are four other level controls
that affect the individual amplifier modules. Shelving
filters at both ends of the frequency spectrum and three
fully parametric equalizers help compensate for standing waves in the control room. The EQs can be inserted
separately or grouped so their effect can be directly
evaluated.
Impulse Coupling
Further progress in development was achieved by the
use of Alucore® panels, an extra firm component material
with an aluminum honeycomb core. All drivers of the S6X
and S7A Mk2 are mounted on such panels, which considerably improves mechanical coupling between the drivers
and the cabinet.
In large film score mixing rooms, there may be a need to
simulate theater sound. Based on the ISO 2969 standard,
the Dolby® X-Curve is used to achieve this. This filter engages a 3 dB per octave roll-off starting at 2 kHz. Below
the front input jack is a selector switch that activates this
filter, eliminating the need for external processing during
the film mix. In addition to the rear input there is an additional switchable XLR input on the front panel, allowing
work with the monitor regardless of set-up.

ADAM Audio subwoofers are designed with one primary

All subwoofers feature both balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) input/output connectors and comprehensive control options that allow for adapting to different

Panel/Controls
All subwoofers feature a level control (-60dB to +6dB),
phase switch (180°) and a variable upper frequency control (50-150Hz). For the satellite outputs, an 85Hz high
pass filter can be switched in to block frequencies below
85Hz so satellite speakers can meet the Dolby® recommendations for theater sound and also to relieve the
satellites from the lower frequencies. In addition, you can
either switch on/off the subwoofer manually or use the
option of automatically powering up the subwoofer whenever it receives a signal (‚signal-on/continuous‘).

The Sub7 has been designed to complement smaller monitors such
as the AX-Series. Its small footprint allows for easy placement, even
in small environments. The included remote control facilitates volume
changes or crossover frequency adjustments from your favorite listening position.
The Sub8 is a small yet powerful subwoofer designed to extend the
low frequency capabilities of any nearfield monitoring system down to
30Hz.
The Sub10 Mk2 and the Sub12 are powerful subwoofers designed to
extend the low frequency capabilities of any near or midfield monitoring
system down to 25Hz (Sub10) and 22Hz (Sub12) respectively.
It houses a robust 8.5“ woofer with a 1.5“ voice coil driven by a 160W
ICE power amplifier. This amp combines low heat generation with high
performance to handle maximum power levels, even during long mix
sessions.
Sturdy special woofers with extended cone travel and a heavy-duty
coil have been optimized for accurate reproduction from a bass reflex
enclosure. The down-firing bass reflex tube avoids intrusive ventilation noise because of its generous size and shape. The PWM amplifier
produces over 90% efficiency and can handle critical passages without
overheating for long periods of time. An additional output allows you to
cascade as many subwoofers as needed.

Sub15
The Sub15 is an extremely powerful subwoofer capable of extending the
frequency range of main and midfield monitors down to 20Hz. The sturdy
15“ woofer is made of an exceptionally rigid aluminum membrane and
is driven by two powerful magnets and a 100mm voice coil. With 1000
Watts (RMS) power capability, the PWM amplifier has an efficiency factor
of nearly 90%. With these performance features, the Sub15 is easily capable of handling critical musical passages with intense and sudden bass
peaks without showing signs of distortion or overheating. The downward
firing bass port has been specially designed with ample dimensions and
rounded edges to cancel any port noise.
Sub2100
The Sub15 is also very flexible when it comes to connectivity: There are
balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) input/output connectors to be
found on the rear of the subwoofer.
The Sub15 combines excellent transient response capability with an
impressive low frequency performance to enable a genuinely musical
reproduction experience. With a high and undistorted sound pressure
output of 120dB maximum SPL at one meter, the Sub15 makes the
perfect subwoofer for mid-sized and larger control rooms.

In order to adjust the sound of the Sub15 to different room situations
or individual taste, we have implemented several controls including
one for volume (-60dB to +6dB) and one for the crossover frequency
(50Hz - 150Hz). The satellite speakers can either be driven full range or
high pass filtered at 85Hz. This allows the Sub15 to be easily integrated
into a Dolby surround setup. Unfavorable phase relationships between
the satellites and the subwoofer, particularly in the crossover frequency
range, can be easily controlled with the supplied phase reverse switch.

ADAM has developed the unique Sub2100 subwoofer for the special requirements of large control rooms and studios. The Sub2100 combines a
huge 21.5“ woofer and an amplifier capable of 1000W continuous power
housed in a bass reflex enclosure tuned for reproducing frequencies
down to 18Hz. The sheer power and extremely high efficiency (99dB/
W/m) enable this system to produce linear SPL peaks of ≥128dB without
any significant compression.

by insiders among working professionals in the recording industry. After only fifteen years, our monitors have

Loudspeaker Technology – an Overview
The Benefits of ADAM Monitors
ADAM studio monitors are for producers and sound engineers who seek
the most accurate, uncompromised tools available for evaluating their
work. Our monitors are developed to achieve the most natural and true
reproduction of a given acoustic event within the context of a specific
cabinet size.
The cornerstones of our technology are groundbreaking innovation in
electro-acoustic transducers, painstaking design and superior materials.
Along with that, our own extensive acoustic and musical experience is
essential to the involvement of future professional users and their listening experiences.
Accuracy is an indispensable part of our high quality standards as applied to all aspects of our product development. For that reason, every
X-ART tweeter and midrange driver is meticulously crafted and tested by
hand at our facility in Berlin. The final tests include all crucial electroacoustic parameters: impedance, absolute frequency response, sensitivity level, relative frequency response to a reference standard, phase
characteristics, transient response, absolute phase and total harmonic
distortion.
The dynamic transducers used in more than 99% of all loudspeakers today generate sound waves by using a voice coil mechanically connected
to a stiff cone or dome. The preferred dome materials are usually fabric,
polyamide or aluminum. The unavoidable shortcomings of this design
are the relatively high mass of the diaphragm/voice coil assembly and
its tendency to lose stiffness over time. The former constrains the upper
frequency range; the latter progressively degrades the overall sonic
performance.
ADAM has found proprietary solutions for problems in loudspeaker
technologies that involve a significant improvement over conventional
approaches. With the X-ART tweeters and midrange drivers described
in more detail on the following pages, ADAM offers its own approach to
transducer technology that drastically improves the driver-to-air ratio and
the capability for accurate and natural sounding musical reproduction.
Most of the active electronics in our monitors are also manufactured
at ADAM. The plug-in amplifiers are based on so-called ICE modules –
PWM-based power amplifiers and power supply units that enable high
power levels without any heat issues due to an operating efficiency
of 90%. The ICE modules and the ADAM designed A/B amplifiers are
assembled by our in-house electronics department. State of the art
measuring instruments are used to precisely analyze response characteristics to guarantee consistently high quality standards.
Almost all conventional loudspeaker drivers, whether they are voice coil
driven, ribbon, electrostatic, piezo or magneto static, act like a piston,
moving air in a 1:1 ratio with respect to the motion of the driver. This
creates a problem because the specific weight of air is much lower than
that of the driver mechanism, inhibiting its ability to couple effectively
with the transducer. In electrical terms, this is described as poor impedance matching between the source and load. In both cases (acoustical
and electrical), the result is a less than perfect power transfer. Hence,
most loudspeakers only have an efficiency factor of a mere 1 to 2%.

All monitors of our AX- and SX-Series are designed, assembled, tested
and packed in Berlin, ensuring that each product is subjected to the
same high-standard quality control from the start of development until
shipment.
This is the only way we can guarantee our claim that ADAM speaker
systems are the best tools in professional monitoring today. The ability
to place all of our working and testing procedures under one roof with
continuous quality management ensures that our products will maintain
the highest quality standards.

studios worldwide.
Extended Warranty
All ADAM Audio active monitors carry a five-year warranty, well beyond
the industry standard. This is a clear indication that ADAM is committed
to the highest level of customer satisfaction and proof of the reliability of
our products.
A7X assembly line
Although different loudspeaker designs could improve these individual
parameters in many cases, they also have other complex problems that
create further disadvantages in terms of performance. Ribbon tweeters,
for example, have a very low impedance, which necessitates an extra
transformer and limits their efficiency and dynamics. In addition, their viability as a general replacement for dynamic tweeters is further reduced
by the fact that these can typically only be used for frequencies above
5kHz. Magneto static designs admittedly achieve normal impedances
and higher efficiency without the need for an extra transformer but the
problems they have with unacceptably high crossover frequencies and
serious limitations in terms of dynamics remained unsolved.

The X-ART (eXtended Accelerating Ribbon Technology) tweeters and midrange drivers incorporate a new approach to the Air Motion Transformer
concept originally developed by Dr. Oskar Heil. X-ART establishes a new
direction concerning the kinematics of moving air that dramatically improves the quality of audio reproduction. The X-ART membrane consists
of a pleated diaphragm in which the folds compress or expand according
to the audio signal applied to them. The result is that air is drawn in and
squeezed out, like the bellows of an accordion.
Splitting up the Diaphragm Area into Parts

In addition to the advantage in terms of air transference, the X-ART
tweeter’s pleated membrane avoids the typical breakup/distortion and
subsequent dynamic limiting of higher frequencies caused by stiffer
voice coil designs found in dome and cone tweeters. Another positive
result of the X-ART design is that the conducting paths are in direct
contact with the outer air and are being cooled immediately.
ADAM‘s X-ART tweeter has a high efficiency of 96 dB/W/m, a perfectly
linear impedance (3.9 ±0.21Ω), an equally perfect phase response, excellent directivity characteristics and exceptional power handling capability.
Every progression invariably brings up new questions and difficulties. The
new X-ART tweeter with its extended frequency range up to 50kHz (-3dB
point) initially created an interesting problem: PWM amplifiers require
a low pass filter to separate the modulation frequency from the audio
band, which may limit the reproduction capabilities of the X-ART tweeter.
The ADAM X-ART design overcomes the piston-like motion of all conventional drivers and their inevitable problems by achieving an improvement
in air loading by a factor of 4 over conventional transducers. To illustrate
the basic principle using a comparison: When you breathe, your thorax
is moving slowly whereas the air is moving comparably faster. Similarly,
the X-ART diaphragm presses the air faster in or out of its folds than they
themselves are moving. This markedly superior ‘motor’ is responsible for
the unprecedented clarity and pristine transient reproduction that can be
heard with the ADAM X-ART drivers.
More Area equals higher Dynamic Response
The unfolded X-ART diaphragm is significantly larger, although the sound
opening of the X-ART tweeter is very similar to that of a 1inch cone
tweeter.
With piston-like designs, the visible diaphragm opening is always the
acoustically active area. By folding the X-ART diaphragm into the 3rd
dimension (as seen from the listener’s position) a larger foil can be used,
allowing the ratio to be increased to 2.5:1. This means the acoustically
active area is 2.5 times larger than the visible sound opening of the
X-ART tweeter.
These values support the claim that the eXtended Accelerating Ribbon
Technology is a technically superior solution that delivers outstanding
measured specifications and extraordinary reliability. They also form the
basis for the main purpose behind ADAM‘s technology: to provide the
best possible reproduction of acoustic signals.
The X-ART Midrange Driver
The sonic superiority of X-ART suggests this principle should also be
used for the musically vital midrange. The X-ART midrange can theoretically cover a range from about 400Hz-20kHz, with a diaphragm that only
weighs a fraction of those found in comparable midrange dome tweeters.
This allows for superior reproduction and a diaphragm area about three
times larger than the visible sound outlet.
The Perfect Match
So, ADAM decided to design its own high-frequency power amp that
allows the X-ART tweeter to live up to its unique potential. We created a
power amplifier module with ultra low distortion (≤0.005% at 50W from
2kHz to 20kHz) and an excellent damping factor. An internal bandwidth
of more than 1 MHz is externally limited so the unit can deliver an ultra
wide response up to 300kHz. This ensures the full potential of the X-ART
tweeter can be realized in terms of achieving the original objective: an
unsurpassed clarity, ease and naturalness in the reproduction of high
frequencies.
Similar to the X-ART tweeter, the foil diaphragm consequently exhibits
linear phase behavior that cannot be achieved with voice coil technology. The sonic result is characterized by an authenticity that sets a new
standard in sound reproduction.

In recent years, amplifier technology has experienced a profound change
similar to the transition from tubes to transistors some 40 years ago.
Semiconductors can still be found in this new generation of amplifiers,
but the signals to be amplified are treated in a completely different way.
In order to match the superior reproduction capabilities of the midrange and treble bands even at lower frequencies, we use admittedly
conventionally driven woofers equipped with a highly unconventional
membrane.
PWM
Kevlar
Pulse Width Modulation, also referred to as Class D amplification, converts the incoming signal to a series of rectangular waveforms of equal
height. The width of the rectangles varies in time and their relationship to
one another represents the musical signal. This waveform can be more
easily amplified as the transistors are no longer modulated. Instead, they
are used as switches that only turn the power supply voltage on and off.
Kevlar is one of the most advanced synthetic materials available. Kevlar
withstands elongation by a force factor greater than 1000 times that of
steel, enabling the cone to resist twisting or warping. Because of this
rigidity, it is nearly impossible for the cone diaphragm to build up partial
vibrations.
The Sum of all Parts
In principle, it would be possible for a very fast mechanical switch to
do this, but power transistors are a better choice for this task, which
explains why PWM amplifiers still function pretty much as conventional
Class A/B designs. It is important to note there are no bits and bytes
involved, so the term „digital amplifier“ is misleading.
PWM in Studio Monitors
The PWM principle has been around for decades, but time was needed
to develop units that can perform at the leading edge in terms of sonic
reproduction quality and yet still maintain the previously mentioned high
efficiency. The ADAM PWM amplifiers use new technology for both the
amplifiers and power supply units (i.e. no more transformers), combined
with state of the art input and filter sections to achieve the best in multichannel active studio monitoring.
While the accuracy of the bass sometimes comes at the expense of the
volume, especially with larger sized devices, ADAM monitors combine
high volume and clarity, even in the low frequency band. What X-ART
tweeters and midrange drivers do for the treble and midrange, ADAM
woofers bring to the low end–the ability to reproduce sound material
with the highest possible level of accuracy and realism instead of imposing bass, all of which guarantee the ideal translation of ADAM monitors
to a wide range of systems and environments.
Efficiency and Reliability
The main advantage of PWM amplifiers is an extremely high efficiency of
over 90%. As a result, the heat to be dissipated is only one fifth of earlier
designs, leading to the much higher reliability and durability of these
modules.
