It is our goal to offer you the best quality high performance moisture meters available anywhere. To get maximum benefit from your Professional meter it is suggested that you read these instructions to familiarise yourself with the operation and capabilities of this instrument before taking moisture readings. Your Professional Meter incorporates the following operational features, 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Digital readout to 0.1% accuracy Measuring range from 7% to 40% Timed cut out after 4 minutes, saves batteries Hold facility so readings can be frozen until recorded Low battery indicator on liquid crystal display Built-in probe pins Phono Connector for optional external electrode or calibration plug. Optional external electrodes include hammer type, deep wall type and shallow type. Optional field calibration check plugs 1 The Importance Of Determining Moisture Content Of Wood When wood and wood by-products are installed at the correct moisture content for the environment in which they will be used, the risk of swelling or shrinkage is minimised. If it is installed too wet and dries in service the result will be shrinkage and distortion. If it is installed too dry it could gain moisture which could result in swelling. Using a good quality moisture meter is the most practical way of ensuring the wood is at the correct moisture level for its intended use. Knowing the actual moisture level also enables efficient processing to be carried out, such as milling, machining, gluing, laminating, spraying and hand painting. The Professional Moisture Meter will fulfil all these requirements. How it works The Professional Moisture Meter works on the principle of DC resistance. When the electrode pins are pressed or driven into the wood, the electrical resistance between the electrodes is measured and indicated on the digital display. If the wood is dry, the resistance is high. If moisture is present in the wood the electrical resistance between the pins changes. The higher the moisture content the greater the reduction in resistance. The level of resistance is accurately measured by the instrument which translates it into percentage of dry weight moisture content. The professional gives moisture readings from 7% to 40%. It should be noted that readings above 27% (nominal value of the fibre saturation point) are indicative only. Readings are given to the nearest 0.1% 2 Taking Moisture Readings To measure content, press the ON button and push either the instrument mounted pins or the pins on the external electrodes into the wood. Align the pins parallel to the grain. (See below detailing the correct selection of electrodes and pins.) Attention is drawn to the section on Species and Temperature Correction. Selection of Probes and Pins Pins Pin selection Type of pin Penetration SPI-200 200mm (8") Straight insulated 175mm (7") SPI-90 90mm (3.5") Straight insulated 72mm (2.8") SPI-52 52mm (2") Straight insulated 36mm (1.5") TP-30 30mm (1.2") Tapered 14mm (0.5") TP20 20mm (0.7") Tapered 7.5mm (0.3") Code Length Code SPI-200 and SPI-90 Used for checking moisture in cavities etc. For use with HH-14, not for use with Hammer Electrode. SPI-52 and SPI-42 Used with Hammer Electrode for reading moisture below surface. TP-30 Used with Hand Probe or Hammer Probe for general use. TP-20 Instrument mounted. Probe selection Code HH-14 HA-21 Hand-held electrode with cable and plug Hammer action electrode. 3 Battery The Professional Moisture Meter is fitted with a non-rechargeable PP3 9 volt battery. (Access to battery can be gained by unscrewing the bottom cap). Battery life in excess of 72 hours of continuous use, can be expected. This means that, in normal intermittent use, the battery should last up to a year. When the battery strength begins to weaken a LoBat indicator will appear on the Liquid Crystal Display. It is then advisable to replace the battery as soon as possible. Factors Affecting Moisture Readings The readings of all moisture meters are influenced by the characteristics of different species of wood as well as temperature and other factors listed below;Species Different species of wood can vary in density and conductivity which can have an effect on the electrical resistance of the wood. This can influence meter readings for the same moisture content and can also apply to similar species from different origins. A species adjustment table is provided on page 6 to 17. Temperature Meter readings can be affected by wood temperature. The Professional is calibrated at 200c (680F). At wood temperatures above 200c (680F), the meter readings are higher and at wood temperatures below 200c the meter readings are lower. A temperature adjustment chart is provided on page 5. Chemical treatment or contamination Readings may be affected by certain flame retardants, preservatives, aluminium paint and by contamination by salt water. Treat all readings on such wood as indicative readings only. Surface Moisture Surface moisture due to wetting or condensation can affect readings when uninsulated pins are used. It is recommended that insulated pins such as SP-52 are used in conjunction with HA-21 Hammer Action electrode. As the pins are driven into the wood, readings can be taken at different depths unaffected by moisture on the surface. 4 Calibration The calibration of the Professional has been based on studies carried out in Australia, Canada, the United States, South Africa and the UK. Readings have been verified by tests carried out in-house and also by FORBAIRT, the Irish Institute of Research and Standards. Field testing, as specified in ASTM D444-92 can be carried out to test the circuit by connecting external resistors of known value to the resistor pins. This can be achieved by plugging a Standard Calibration Plug into the phono socket on the instrument and noting the reading on the digital display. Standard Calibration Plugs are available in the following values from Tramex or your supplier. Standard Calibration Plug - 1; Moisture reading Standard Calibration Plug - 2; Moisture reading Standard Calibration Plug - 3; Moisture reading 14.2% 18.3% 21.5% To check calibration, insert Standard Calibration Plug into phono socket, press ON and note reading. Tolerance; ±0.2%. If readings are outside this tolerance, return your Professional to your supplier or Tramex. Temperature Adjustment Chart The Professional has been calibrated on wood at an ambient temperature of 200c (680F). When measuring moisture in wood at a different temperature, the following temperature adjustment needs to be applied. (Figures rounded to the nearest whole number).
