nitrogen is absorbed at a high pressure and
is released at low pressure. The oxygen is
delivered to the receiver tank where it is
ready to be delivered throughout the
hospital. The system has the capability of
delivering 14,000 liters of oxygen at 20 psi
in a 24-hour period.

Quality Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery
Providing quality veterinary dentistry and oral surgery in the general practice today requires proper technique
and equipment. Periodontal disease is by far the most common oral disease treated in specialty and general
practice. Proper recognition of periodontal pathology is essential and cannot exist without the aid of periodontal
probing and dental radiography. Once determined, pathology must be approached therapeutically by
veterinarians who have had proper training and practice at veterinary dental continuing education programs. This
knowledge combined with periodontal hand instrumentation and a high speed delivery system provides delivery
of quality veterinary dental care for your patients. Without all of these components quality care is not possible.
Extraction of compromised teeth constitutes a large portion of veterinary dental procedures. Mobility is only one
sign that extraction is indicated. Many teeth have undergone significant bone destruction requiring extraction
long before mobility is an issue. Without the aid of periodontal flaps and removal of bone, many extractions
would be very difficult and time consuming.
High speed delivery systems utilize handpieces designed to mount carbide burs and facilitate removal of
vestibular bone and sectioning of multi-rooted teeth ensuring minimally traumatic and efficient extractions.
Common indications for high speed delivery systems include enamel defect repair prior to restoration placement,
restoration contouring, smoothing bone, cutting bone for maxillectomy, mandibulectomy, odontoplasty, acrylic
contour in oral fracture management, root canal access.
Slow speed handpieces, air water syringes and piezoelectric scalers are valuable functions that add diversity to
high speed delivery systems. These devices aid the practitioner in procedures from dental prophylaxis to root
canal therapy and augment the high speed component in many of the procedures listed above.
Today’s quality practices rely on practitioner knowledge, skill and appropriate dental equipment to provide the
best in veterinary dental care. Veterinary dental radiography and high speed delivery systems represent the
foundation of quality equipment required for providing proper veterinary dental therapy.

1. High-speed offers rapid, efficient cutting of the
tooth and/or supporting bone and increased control
ensures less trauma to the oral cavity. At
450,000rpm, it’s like a hot knife through butter!
2. Increased efficiency means quicker procedures –
less anesthesia time for the patient, more time for
you to do other things.

38% tax bracket, that means they would save $3,200.00 in taxes bringing the net cost of the unit
down to $5200. This gives you an even faster return on your investment

YOU’RE TRUSTED TO PRESERVE ANIMAL HEALTH
AND PREVENT THE SPREAD OF DISEASE.
~Make sure Intra-Oral X-rays are a part of your dental protocol~
TOP 10 REASONS TO INTEGRATE
AN INTRA-ORAL X-RAY UNIT
INTO YOUR PRACTICE
X-ray is the only way to determine
accurate diagnosis, a treatment plan, and
a prognosis.
Two-thirds of the tooth lies below the
gumline. Without an X-ray, you are missing
a large percentage of disease.
Dental X-rays are the only way to show
the client what was done and why--this
ADDS VALUE.
Determining anatomical orientation
and root structure prior to extractions
leads to a more e cient procedure.
Post-extraction X-rays con rm removal
of root fragments, avoiding further
complications.
Radiographs are the only way to
accurately determine the percentage of
bone loss when deciding whether a tooth
can be treated and saved versus removal.
Over 70% of cats over the age of 5 su er
from feline ondontoclastic resorptive
lesions (FORLs). Because a tooth can
appear to have a normal looking crown
with major disease occuring below the
gum line, FORLs cannot be properly
diagnosed and treated without
radiographs.
It pays for itself over and over through
frequency of use. Common problems such
as facial swelling, mandibular fractures,
chronic eye infections, chronic nasal
discharge and oral cancer can all warrant
intra-oral radiographs.
Radiographs to support treatment decisions can prove invaluable to
both veterinarian and patient. 80% of animals seen by veterinarians
require some kind of dental procedure.
Not only could integrating an Intra-Oral X-Ray Unit bene t your
patients, it’s an excellent and often overlooked source of revenue!
Consider the following cost and revenue breakdown:
Average Fee for Full Mouth
Radiographs
# per day
Daily Revenue
$50.00
2
$100.00
Average Cost for Additional
Treatment*
# Cases Per Day
Added Daily Revenue
$100.00
2
$200.00
Revenue based on 20 work days per month:
$6,000.00
Yearly Revenue:
$72,000.00
*Dr. Jan Bellows, Dipl. AVDC estimates the cost of addtional treatment to average to $100 per patient.
In the above example, the clinic invested $10,000 and made $72,000 in the rst year
based on radiographs and related treatments.
By adding full mouth x-rays to your dental protocol, you will uncover disease that
would have been missed without radiographs.
X-ray units are available in wall mount and mobile stands, as well as a portable
handheld option. No matter how large or small your practice is adding intra-oral x-ray
is a win-win for your practice, your clients and most importantly, your patients.
Ask your Animal Health Representative how you can add Intra-Oral Radiography to
your practice. Installation services are available through Henry Schein ProService
Division.
In today’s litigious society, use of
radiographs to support treatment
decisions can provide invaluable.
It meets the equipment
recommendations of the AAHA Dental Care
Guidelines for Dogs and Cats.

DENTAL X-RAY
VetVision DC
Your Digital Dental Practice Begins Here
With its 0.4mm focal spot – the smallest available – low time
settings and adjustable kV and mA,VetVision DC offers the perfect
feature combination for today's digital environment.
Powerful features for image excellence
• 0.4mm focal spot
• Time selection from 2 seconds to 10 milliseconds
• Adjustable kVp – 60, 65, and 70
• Adjustable mA – 4, 5, 6 and 7
• Large, easy-to-read techniques display
• Easy-to-understand icons
• 30 pre-set techniques
• Unique sensor selection feature
• Unique tube head handle
Why is focal size so important?
Focal spot has a direct impact on image clarity. A smaller focal spot
increases resolution and makes details appear sharper and more defined.
VetVision DC's 0.4mm focal spot produces visibly higher resolution
images – with film, phosphor plates and digital sensors. Images
are sharper and more defined; small but important details become
visible for diagnosis.
Why is timing range so important?
Digital sensors are more sensitive than film and require less time and
lesradiation to produce an image. The capability to adjust time settings to
low levels can eliminate overexposure and provide more control over
image contrast. As sensor technology advances and sensitivity
increases in the next few years, the ability to choose low time
settings becomes essential.
Why is adjustable kVp and mA so important?
First, because you may want or need to adjust the density or contrast of
your images according to your preferences or the needs of the patient.
VetVision DC gives you the ultimate flexibility.
Second, not all sensors perform optimally at the same kV and mA settings.
VetVision DC provides the best possible techniques for our own Vision DX
Sensor system and for virtually any other digital sensor system available.
In fact,VetVision DC has a unique system selection feature that allows the
user to optimize for a number of different sensor brands.
VetVision DC Has Everything You Need For Imaging Excellence
VetVision DC is thoughtfully made with the highest quality materials and
design. It's easy to use with simple icons, easy technique selection and the
best, most stable arm in the industry. Combine VetVision DC with Progeny's
Vision DX digital sensors for the perfect synergy of technology and
efficiency.

Sales Meeting: Monitors
Monitoring a Must
Show your customers that hand-me-downs and medical monitors will not
ensure the safety of their patients
W
hile it is generally safe to anesthetize animals
during surgery, there are risks involved. For instance,
hypotension, or low blood pressure, can lead to
oxygen deprivation in the brain and other vital organs,
causing shock and death. Hypoventilation can occur when
the exchange of oxygen and carbon monoxide is
inadequate. Although the animal may appear to be
breathing normally, inadequate oxygen or a build-up of
carbon dioxide in the blood can cause the blood to become
more acidic, leading to impaired cellular function. Close
monitoring can better equip veterinarians to protect their
patients from these and other complications. When
distributor reps know the ins and outs of monitors, they
can ensure their customers are at the top of their game
when it comes to patient safety.
• SpO2 or oxygen saturation of hemoglobin in the
blood. Newer digital technology reportedly mitigates
artifacts caused by patients moving (e.g., shivering or
panting) or poor perfusion. A variety of sensors are
available, including tongue clips and reflectance sensors.
While all of the five parameters provide information
critical to a patient’s well-being, blood pressure and end
tidal CO2 enable the veterinarian to be proactive and
prevent any unnecessary complications. Normal blood
pressure indicates that the patient’s heart is working well.
Similarly, monitoring end tidal CO2 helps measure pulmonary function. The veterinarian can identify a detrimental
situation within a couple of breaths, before it results in
cardiac arrest. EKG, temperature and oxygen saturation
are important as well, but have slower feedback.
How they work
Monitors today can detect all five vital parameters recommended for human patients by the American Society of
Anesthesiology. These include:
• Blood pressure. Measures indirect cardiac output and
the mechanical function of the heart, as well as anesthetic
depth. Veterinarians can benefit from monitors that provide
animal-specific algorithms, a broad heart range to accommodate large and small animals, and a wide selection of
small animal cuffs.
• End tidal CO2. Provides instant feedback on the
patient’s ventilation status.
• EKG. Looks at the rate and rhythm of the heart. Lead
placement is critical. For instance, as cats age, the angle of
their heart changes, and the vet may not get the same
waveform as with a young kitten. In addition, vet-specific
algorithms and multiple filters to eliminate baseline noise
are also important.
• Temperature. Hypothermia, or a drastic drop in body
temperature, presents a danger to any animal. Some
breeds of dogs also are susceptible to hyperthermia, or an
extremely elevated temperature.
Invasive vs. noninvasive
blood pressure
Invasive blood pressure monitoring, or direct arterial pressure
monitoring, in which a catheter is inserted directly into the
patient’s artery, is more accurate than non-invasive monitoring. It measures pressure from within the artery using a
computer algorithm to interpret the strength and duration of
the pulse. However, it is not practical to use this approach
during most surgical procedures, according to experts.
Non-invasive or indirect methods are relatively accurate
and widely accepted for determining blood pressure. Two
primary indirect methods include Doppler and oscillometry.
Doppler devices – manual systems comprised of a
pressure cuff and an acoustic transducer – do not provide
much information beyond the patient’s systolic pressure.
The vet or assistant must shave a spot on the animal’s limb
and apply ultrasonic gel and the transducer, which is
connected to headphones. Then, the user pumps up the
cuff, which cuts off the patient’s blood flow. The pressure
is let out, and the moment at which the blood begins to
flow again is the measure of systolic pressure.

Sales Meeting: Monitors
Although early human oscillometric devices did not
provide reliable reading in smaller veterinary patients,
today’s more vet-specific systems are said to be
automatic, fast and efficient, even with cats and dogs, and
they are growing more popular among veterinarians for
measuring blood pressure. Whereas a Doppler device
requires the veterinarian’s assistant to manually take the
patient’s blood pressure every three to five minutes, most
oscillometric devices can be cycled to measure blood
pressure at periodic intervals. In addition, they include
alarms that are pre-set to alert the veterinarian if the
patient’s blood pressure becomes too high or too low.
Oscillometric systems are hands-off and the vet can focus
on the surgery. Whether veterinarians opt for Doppler or
oscillometric technology, the distributor rep must help his
or her customers select the right cuff sizes for patients to
ensure the greatest accuracy.
Just as reps should understand the difference among the
various monitoring technologies, so too should they recognize
– and convey to their customers – that monitors designed for
humans do not perform as well on animals. Because animal
heart rate and blood pressure are monitored differently than
human heart rate, it is important that veterinarians rely on
systems with animal-specific algorithms.
Cost and value
Monitors vary in price, depending on how comprehensive
they are and whether or not they are automatic. Although
some veterinarians may prefer to add different monitors to
measure different parameters, one comprehensive,
automatic monitor can be much more efficient. All of the
data is supplied in one place, and fewer wires must be
connected. And, in the end, it may be more economical, as
the veterinarian must purchase less equipment.
An automatic monitor that measures all five parameters can cost between $5,000 and $9,000. Veterinarians
unable to afford such a monitor may opt to start out with
a blood pressure monitor designed for both the exam
room and the OR. By establishing an efficient blood
pressure screening program, the practice can generate
additional revenue and at some point buy a pricier, more
comprehensive monitor.
How to sell
As with many products, distributor reps should explore their
customers’ needs before suggesting a monitor to best meet
them. Find out what the veterinarian generally monitors or
would like to monitor. Explain the importance of using
technology designed specifically for animals, rather than
using human hand-me-downs. And find out if your customers understand the importance of end-tidal CO2.
Some of the most common objections veterinarians have
to purchasing new monitors involve cost. Some veterinarians believe their human monitor works just as well on
animals. Others are nervous about replacing several older
pieces of monitoring technology with a newer all-in-one
model because they fear that if a comprehensive system
fails, they will be without any monitoring technology. True,
monitors can fail, but this often is due to user error or
because accessories wear out. Manufacturers generally
provide a loaner program, so it is up to the distributor rep
to keep his or her customers apprised of this.
Accessories
Monitor accessories play a critical role in the monitor’s
performance and, as such, should be replaced before they
wear out. In most cases, the cost of replacement is
reasonable:
• Blood pressure. Blood pressure cuffs should be replaced
when the Velcro wears out. Veterinarians should not rely on
tape to hold cuffs together, particularly since it can lead to
inaccurate readings, and a new cuff costs roughly $6.
• End tidal CO2. Veterinarians should replace the adaptor
for the main stream CO2 and periodically replace the
sampling line for the side stream CO2. The replacement
cost is $20 or less.
• ECG. As the ECG clips and wire leads fray or break, they,
too must be replaced.
• Temperature. Temperature probes generally are
durable and last a long time. Eventually, though, they too
may have to be replaced.
Educating your customers on the value of monitors can
help them save lives, increase revenue and improve the
reputation of their clinic.

VETROSON® V-10 Bi-Polar
Electrosurgical Unit
Soft tissue varies in electrical resistance;
the deeper the tissue, the greater the
electrical load it puts on the electrosurgical
unit. The V-10 features special lowimpedance circuitry that acts similarly to a
car's automatic transmission. Generally the
power has to be set only once for the case
at hand, after which the instrument's
circuitry takes over, automatically adjusting
the power to compensate for tissue
variations at the operative site. Cutting
efficiency, therefore, remains constant
throughout the procedure, when the
electrode penetrates into highly
vascularized tissue in the middle of the
incision.
• Ready the moment it is turned on
• 100% solid-state circuitry with no vacuum
tubes to break/burn out or keep
veterinarian waiting during warmup
• Constantly adjusts its power
• Surgery and coagulation handpieces are
activated by depressing the foot pedal,
ensuring sterility throughout operation
• All components are autoclavable: 20
minutes at 250° F
