To adjust the chain tension, loosen the flywheel axle nuts (#21) and then rotate the chain tensioner bolts (#27) clockwise by a ½ turn. Make sure that you adjust both sides equally so that the flywheel remains in alignment with the frame.

To change the chain, remove the outer chain guard, loosen the axle nuts and remove the chain tensioner bolts. Lower the flywheel and remove the old chain. Install the new chain, raise the flywheel and reattach the chain tensioner bolts and outer chain guard.

The Smart Release mechanism is designed to provide a consistent resistance level. To adjust the mechanism, use the Smart Release Adjusting Tool (Part #71709) to increase or decrease the tension.

Lubricate the chain using Schwinn Citrus Chain Wax or other chain lubricant containing Teflon®.

To troubleshoot a loud squealing sound from the brake pads, remove the brake pads from the assembly and roughen up the surface with a wire brush. Saturate the pads with Schwinn Fit-Tech Silicone (#72016) and reattach them.
