The Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) is the
association representing manufacturers of refrigeration, air
conditioning and heating equipment. ARI administers a
standardized rating program in which an
independent laboratory verifies that each product
of the ARI membership delivers the performance
that its manufacturer claims. As a result, the ARI
rating system gives customers direct comparisons
among similar types of equipment whose reliability

Getting to components is easy. Front
doors allow quick, easy access to
the food zone and to the enhanced

Sequence of Operation
Harvest Sequence
1 Before the compressor starts, the water pump
and water dump solenoid are energized for 45
seconds, to completely purge the ice machine
of old water after automatic shut-off. This feature
ensures that the ice making cycle starts with
fresh water.
5 The water pump continues to run, and the water
dump valve energizes for 45 seconds to purge
the water in the sump trough. The water fill valve
energizes (turns on) and de-energizes (turns off)
strictly by time. The water fill valve energizes for
the last 15 seconds of the 45-second water purge.
The harvest valve(s) is also energized during
water purge, although it stays on for an additional
5 seconds (50 seconds total on time) during the
initial refrigeration system start-up.
When Used - The air compressor energizes for
the last 10 seconds of the cycle.
2 The compressor starts after the 45 second
water purge, and it remains on throughout
the entire Freeze and Harvest Sequences.
The water fill valve is energized at the same
time as the compressor.
At the same time the compressor starts, the
condenser fan motor (air-cooled models) is
supplied with power throughout the entire
Freeze and Harvest Sequences.
Freeze Sequence
3 The compressor is on for 30 seconds (60 seconds
initial cycle) prior to water flow, to prechill the
evaporator. The water fill valve remains on until
the water level probe is satisfied.
4 The water pump restarts after the prechill.
An even flow of water is directed across the
evaporator and into each cube cell, where it
freezes. The water fill valve will cycle on and
then off one more time to refill the water trough.
When sufficient ice has formed, the water flow
(not the ice) contacts the ice thickness probe.
After approximately 10 seconds of continual
water contact, the harvest sequence is initiated.
The ice machine cannot initiate a harvest
sequence until a 6 minute freeze lock has
been surpassed.
After the 45 second water purge, the water fill
valve, water pump and dump valve de-energize.
6 The harvest valve(s) remains open and the refrigerant
gas warms the evaporator causing the cubes to slide,
as a sheet, off the evaporator and into the storage
bin. The sliding sheet of cubes swings the water
curtain out, opening the bin switch.
The momentary opening and re-closing of the bin
switch terminates the harvest sequence and returns
the ice machine to the freeze sequence (Step 3 - 4).
When Used - The air compressor energizes after
35 seconds and remains energized throughout
the entire harvest cycle. The air compressor will
automatically energize for 60 seconds when the
harvest cycle time exceeded 75 seconds in the
previous cycle.
Automatic Shut-off
7 When the storage bin is full at the end of a
harvest sequence, the sheet of cubes fails to
clear the water curtain and will hold it open.
After the water curtain is held open for 30
seconds, the ice machine shuts off. The ice
machine remains off for 3 minutes before
it can automatically restart.
The ice machine remains off until enough
ice has been removed from the storage bin
to allow the ice to fall clear of the water
curtain. As the water curtain swings back
to the operating position, the bin switch
re-closes and the ice machine restarts
(steps 1 - 2), provided the 3 minute
delay period is complete.

Cleaning an ice machine’s waterdistribution system has always been
an essential, but laborious, part of
routine maintenance. Keeping an ice
machine’s water-distribution system
free of lime deposits and mineral scale
is important. A clean machine operates
more reliably, produces more ice, uses
less energy and lasts longer than one
hampered by lime and scale. And as
water conditions deteriorate throughout
most areas of the United States, the need
for proper cleaning of an ice machine’s
water-distribution system continues to
become more and more important.
Optional,
Automatic Cleaning System (AuCS®)
Eliminates routine maintenance. AuCS counts the number of
ice-making cycles and, at a frequency you select, initiates a
cleaning or sanitizing cycle...AUTOMATICALLY. Choose from
2, 4, or 12-week settings. AuCS for S-Series 450, 500, 600,
850, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1600, and 1800 is installed inside
the ice machine. S-300, 322, 422, and Ice/Beverage model
attaches outside the ice machine.

Standard, Cleaning System
To simplify maintenance, all

switch and pouring in a few ounces

concern. Manitowoc’s exclusive Guardian® Accessory
is patented technology that releases chlorine dioxide

of ice machines.
It is not uncommon to perform
a monthly manual cleaning
of an ice machine to remove

Seventy-five percent quieter than a selfcontained or standard remote ice machine.
Currently there are two kinds of air-cooled ice
machines. One kind is a self-contained unit with
all the components necessary to make ice located
within the machine. The other kind is a remote air-cooled machine
where the condenser is placed outside the building, say on the roof.
That makes it a little quieter than a self-contained model. But the
Manitowoc QuietQube® remote is over 75%
quieter than that...the quietest ever made.
A New Way to Make Ice
Manitowoc uses an exclusive, technology that
puts the compressor and condenser fan motor
on the roof. Our patented CVD technology®
uses cool vapor rather than hot gas to harvest
ice. It not only makes QuietQube ice machines
the quietest ever; it makes them more reliable,
makes them efficient, and provides high levels
of ice production too.

Patented CVD Technology®
CVD® (Cool Vapor Defrost) technology is basically
a different type of ice harvest system that allows
Manitowoc to move the compressor out of
the customer environment. Standard remote
condenser ice machines all use compressor hot
gas systems to heat the evaporator during their
ice harvest cycles. To make hot gas systems
work, the compressor must be as physically close
to the ice making evaporator as possible. This
also means the noise from the compressor is
always concentrated at the ice making part of
the system. This is not something you want
in a customer environment.

Manitowoc CVD ice machines use vapor
refrigerant from the receiver tank to harvest
the ice. The receiver tank is a refrigerant
storage tank typically used on all remote
ice machines and can be a source of vapor
refrigerant for a harvest cycle if the system
is configured correctly. CVD systems all use
large capacity refrigerant accumulators for
maximum compressor protection under
any operating condition. Compressor and
condenser heat and noise is always located
outside away from the customer environment.

The Manitowoc QuietQube™ Ice/Beverage Series
ice machine is a design breakthrough that directly
addresses the leading concerns in the foodservice
industry – sanitation and food safety. The size and
weight of traditional ice-making machines makes
the periodic sanitation and maintenance of
beverage dispensers extremely difficult and time
consuming. With a narrow depth (only 14 inches
(35.56 cm) versus standard models that are
23 inches (58.42 cm) deep) the Manitowoc
Ice/Beverage Series provides the operator
with easy access to the inside of the dispenser for cleaning,
sanitizing, and maintenance.
This unique capability is made possible by
Manitowoc’s patented CVD (Cool Vapor Defrost)
technology which results in an extremely
compact design and allows the machine
to operate with virtually no noise or heat.
The resulting narrow 14 inch (35.56 cm) depth of the
Ice/Beverage ice machine allows the ice dispenser to
be cleaned with the ice maker in place. It also
provides a large open front access area that permits
convenient manual loading of ice in the ice dispenser
should the need arise. The Ice/Beverage unit will not
obstruct sight lines and can be installed or retrofitted
to virtually any commercial beverage dispenser.
This compact Ice/Beverage Series ice machine is available
in high volume ice production capacities to satisfy nearly
every beverage dispenser application at Quick Service Restaurants,
convenience stores, recreational, or educational foodservice operations.
The Ice/Beverage QuietQube Series remote system consists
of an ice machine head section, a CVD remote condensing unit,
and interconnecting refrigerant lines. All ordered separately. The

Small SM50
The SM50 produces individual cubes with a
unique octagon shape. The control panel is
easily accessible and provides functionality for an
automatic ice making mode, patented cleaning and
sanitizing, delay start and a filter replacement light.
Manitowoc’s SM50 is the first ice machine with a
water filter system preinstalled along with a LED

Choose between a B-750 and B-1050, two of the
smallest footprint, large capacity ice storage bins
offered. Also available are the 48" wide B-1100
with 1,114 lbs. of ice storage capacity or the 60"
wide model B-1400 with 1,416 lbs. of ice storage

Sizing
In any business, ice needs are rarely
uniform. For example, more ice is
needed in summer than in winter and
on weekends than on weekdays. Size
your Manitowoc ice machine and
storage bin to meet your peak needs.
Avoid sizing a new ice machine solely
on the performance of your present
equipment. The age and mechanical
condition of your present ice machine
may mislead you in determining
the production capacity you need.
Remember, surrounding air and
incoming water temperatures
affect the quantity of ice a
machine produces.
Determine what these temperatures will be during times of peak usage,
then verify your selection from the machine’s production chart. The Ice
Usage Guide will help you calculate your production requirements based
on your peak needs. After calculating how much ice you expect to need,
add 20% to accommodate future business growth. Taking the time to
correctly size ice making equipment assures ample ice supply during
peak periods.
Installation Hints
Dimensions
Be sure components will fit through doorways, down halls, and into the
installation space. Once installed, most ice machines must have at least
5" to 8" of clearance above, behind and on both sides.
Location
Locate the ice machine in an area where the ambient
air temperature stays between 35°F. and 110°F.
Connections
Electrical and water connections must be within 6' of the ice machine.
Connections must meet local, state, and national codes.
Plumbing Requirements
• Ice machine must be connected to cold water supply.
• Water temperature: minimum 33°F., maximum 90°F.
• Ice making water pressure: minimum 20 psi, maximum 80 psi.
• Condenser water pressure (water-cooled models): minimum 20 psi,
maximum 150 psi.
• Use separate drain lines for ice machine and storage bin.
• Ice machine drain tubing: 1⁄2" minimum I.D.
• Bin drain tubing 3⁄4" minimum I.D.
• Ice-making water drain and bin drain must be vented to the
atmosphere. Do not vent condenser drain on water-cooled models.
