FOREWORD
AVANT-PROPOS
This publication contains the 1972 estimates of
population for counties and census divisions. Although
the methodology and estimation techniques employed
here are the same as in respect of earlier publications,
the boundaries of counties and census divisions have
been changed to conform with the 1971 Census.
Persons who are interested in the exact boundaries of
these counties and census divisions should consult
Population, Census Subdivision (Historical), Catalogue
92-702, Volume:I — Part:l (Bulletin 1.1-2).
Population, tableaux chronologiques (subdivisions de recensement), catalogue 92-702, volume:I — partie:1 (bulletin 1.1-2).
These estimates are prepared by the Estimates
Section of the Population Estimates and Projections
Division, Census Field.
POPULATION ESTIMATES FOR COUNTIES
AND CENSUS DIVISIONS
ESTIMATIONS DE LA POPULATION PAR COMTE
ET PAR DIVISION DE RECENSEMENT
The present report contains estimates for 256
counties and census divisions. The estimates are provided for all the provinces in Canada, but not Yukon
and Northwest Territories.
The estimates refer to the population as of June
1, 1972. June 1 coincides with the date of decennial
and quinquennial censuses as well as the date of annual
post-censal estimates of population for Canada and the
provinces. The total population of all the counties and
census divisions within a province equals the estimate
for that province produced by the Population Estimates and Projections Division, Content and Analysis
Branch, Census Field.
The methodology of estimation has been the
same as in respect of previous publications; the 1967
report (Catalogue 91-206) gives the detail accounts of
methodology in respect of each province. The data
base for the present estimates consists of the 1966 and
1971 Censuses, annual data series of assessment records, school enrolment, births and deaths.
As has been emphasized in the earlier reports, the
figures provided in this report are estimates, and
therefore should not be construed as having the same
reliability as population counts from the census.
Though the estimates have been produced by wellestablished and tested statistical procedures, important
differences do occur among provinces; this is partly
due to the varying quality of the symptomatic data
series available from each of the provinces which form
the basis of estimation.
recensement. Bien que les estimations soient produites par
le moyen de methodes statistiques reconnues et eprouvees, it existe des differences notables entre les provinces;

In 1971, a revised bulletin Revised Estimates for
Counties and Census Divisions, 1967 to 1970, was
produced. This publication contained estimates that
had been revised in the light of the 1971 Census
counts, but, for the sake of consistency and comparability, maintained the boundaries of counties and
census divisions existing in 1966. The 1971 Census
boundary changes are incorporated in the present
report.
In order to facilitate appraisals of the changes
which the county and census division populations have
undergone, this report also provides, in each case,
components of change due to natural increase and net
migration. The natural increase component consists of
births minus deaths and the net migration component
represents the difference between total increase and
natural increase (i.e., the "residual").
"residu").
