RAPPORT STITISTIQUE SURL'OPhBJtTIONDELA WI D 1 ASURNCG40MAG, Mersi947
Claims for Unemployment Insurance
benefit filed in local offices across Canada totalled 45,675 in March compared with
47,141 in February and 50,706 in March
1946. Thus, the decrease in the number of
claims registered each month, begun in
February, continues into March. In spite of
the decrease for Canada as a vvhole in March
compared with February, some Provinces
registered an increase. Increases were as
follows: Nova Scotia, 1 2 000; New Brunswick,
32; and Manitoba 107. Decreases were:
Prince Edward Island, 49; Quebec, 734;
Ontario, 605; Saskatchewan, 198; Alberta,
440; and British Columbia, 2,579.
Ordinary claims currently on the live
unemployment register at March 51st numbered 105 2 291 (60,451 males and 22,840
females) compared with 110,062 (86,097
males and 25,965 females) at February 28th
and 154,820 (122,506 males and 52,314 females) at March 31,1946. Only Nova Scotia
and New Brunswick showed slight increases
at the end of March over the end of February. This indicates that in the country
as a whole the number of cases of unemployment at a given time recorded through the
operations of Unemployment Insurance, is
decreasing. In addition, there were, on the
unemployment register at March 31st, LZ5
(Zmale and 7,17- female) other claims.
These were largely short time claims.
