The annual growth rate in education prices has been
increasing since 1978. In 1982 the Education Price
Index (EPI) rose by 12.6% to e level of 283.3; this
was its largest change since 1976, when the increase
was 15.4%. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) climbed by
10.8% in 1982. This is the first time, since 1978,
that the annual percentage change of the EPI has
nxceed that of the CPI.

component in 1982. The salaries and wages component,
however, has a greater impact on the movement of the
EPI since it represents the main input of school
boards.

Apolicationa of the Education Price Index
Applications de l'indice des Drix
One of the most cormnon uses of a price index is to
deflate current dollars to constant dollars. Using
this technique, it is possible to determine, for
example, real growth on school board expenditures or
growth on spending per student. These applications
appear in Table 10 of publication 81-208 (Financial
Statistics of Education, 1979-80).
1-s applca_
