POPULATION ES ATES BY MARITAL STATUS, AGE AND SEX' FOR CANADA. AND PR OVIN ES
1953
ESTIMATIONS DE LA POPULATION SELON L'ETAT MATRIMONIAL, L'AGE ET LE SEXE
CANADA ET PROVINCES
1953
This report contains estimates of the population by marital status, age and sex, for Canada and
the provinces for 1953, with comparative data for
1951 and 1952.
Using the estimated 1952 figures on marital
status by age and sex as a base, vital statistics
data on marriages and deaths by marital status,
age and sex, and on dissolutions of marriages, as
well as immigration statistics by marital status,
age and sex, for the Year period June 1, 1952 to
June 1, 1953, were applied to the estimated figures
for 1952 to obtain estimates of the population by
marital status, age and sex, for 1953. Allowance
has also been made for the marital status, age and
sex composition of the estimated number of emigrants over this period. Finally, the age totals in
Table 1 were adjusted to correspond with the
official population estimates by age and sex for
1953, published in the 1953 Supplement to D.B.S.
Reference Paper No. 40.
The estimated total population of Canada on
June 1, 1953, was 14,756,000, of whom 10,16 1,100
were 15 years of age and over. The estimated total
of males, 15 years of age and over, was 5,128,700,
of whom 1,596,900 or 31.1 p.c. were single,
3,329,700 or 64.9 p.c. were married, and 202,100 or
3.9 p.c. were widowed or divorced. The estimated
total of females, 15 years of age and over, was
5,032,400, of whom 1,224,100 or 24.3 p.c. were
single, 3,304,800 or 65.7 p.c. were married, and
503,500 or 10.0 p.c. were widowed or divorced. The
difference in the proportionate importance of the
widowed and divorced category among females as
compared with males is due to the much larger
number of widowed females than males in the population. There has been an increase, for both males
and females, since 1951 in the percentage of married persons in the total population 15 years of age
and over. In 1951, of the total population, 15 years
of age and over, 64.1 p.c. was married as compared
with 65.3 p.c. in 1953. It is interesting to note,
however, that the percentage of the population
15-24, married, was 24.2 in 1953 as compared with
21.9 p.c. in 1951.
periode.
