Estimates of Families in Canada, 1967
Nombre estimatif de families au Canada, 1967
The estimated number of families in Canada'
on June 1, 1967, was 4,608,000, an increase of
90,000 or 2.0 p.c. since the 1966 Census, and of
468,000 or 11.3 p.c. since the 1961 Census. The
average number of persons per family in Canada
on June 1, 1967, was 3.9, the same as the 1961
and 1966 Censuses. The population living in
families on June 1, 1967, constituted 88.6 p.c. of
the total population ofCanada on that date. Average
family size was greatest in Quebec and the Atlantic
Provinces at 4.2 persons per family, followed by
the Prairie Provinces at 3.9 persons and Ontario
at 3.7, while British Columbia had the smallest
average size at 3.6 persons per family.
Children in Families. - The average number of
children per family in Canada in June 1967, was
1.9, unchanged from the 1961 and 1966 Censuses.
It should be mentioned that by children per family
is meant the number of unmarried children, under
25 years of age, living at home on June 1, 1967.
The combined number of families with no
children, accounting for 28.8 p.c. of all families,
or only one child showed a slight decrease at
48.0 p.c. as compared with 48.4 p.c. at the 1966
Census and the 49.6 p.c. of all families as shown
at the 1961 Census. By contrast, families with
three or four children showed no change at 21.9
p.c. of all families in June 1967, from the 1966
Census slightly above the 20.9 p.c. recorded at
the 1961 Census. Families with five or more
children in 1967 accounted for 8.6 p.c. of all
families in Canada as compared with 9.2 p.c. as
shown at the 1966 Census.
The 1967 estimates show marked differences
between regions in the number of children per
family. Families with no children, for example,
were only 25.2 p.c. of all families in Quebec and
26.9 p.c.in the Atlantic Provinces, but constituted
32.0 p.c. of the total in British Columbia, 30.6 p.c.
in Ontario and 29.6 p.c. in the Prairie Provinces.
On the other hand, families comprising five or
more children accounted for 13.7 p.c. of all families in the Atlantic Provinces, 12.0 p.c. in Quebec,
7.6 p.c. in the Prairie Provinces, and 6.4 p.c. and
5.0 p.c., respectively, in Ontario and British
Columbia.
Age of Head. -According to the 1967 family
estimates for Canada 28.0 p.c. of the heads of
"normal" families, that is, families with both
husband and wife living at home, were under 35
years of age, 25.3 p.c. between 35 and 44 years,
21.0 p.c. between 45 and 54 years, 14.8 p.c.
between 55 and 64 years and 10.9 p.c. over 65
years of age.
Excluding Yukon and Northwest Territories.

Family. — As in the census, the family, for
purposes of these estimates, is defined as a group
of two or more persons living in the same dwelling
and related to one another either as husband and
wife, with or without unmarried children, or as
parent and children. Any other persons in the
dwelling who might be related to the family head
were not, however, counted as members of the
family. Sometimes such persons would constitute
a second family in the dwelling. For example,
where a married son and his family are living in
the same dwelling as his parents there would be
two families in the same dwelling.
Famille.
Children in Families.—Unmarried sons and
daughters 24 years of age and under living with
their parents were classified as children in the
family. Unmarried sons and daughters 25 years of
age and over living with their parents were counted
as family members but not as children.Stepchildren
and adopted children under 25 years of age were
included in the number of children in families.
Guardianship children or wards, under 21 years of
age were similarly treated.
Coverage of Data on Family Estimates. — The
May 1967 Labour Force Survey which supplied the
sample data on families for this report covered
about 30,000 households in approximately 170
areas across Canada. Excluded were households
in the Yukon and Northwest Territories, households
of Indians on reserves and households in institutions and military camps. Accordingly, the family
estimates in this bulletin exclude families in such
households except that allowance was made for
families on Indian Reserves.
Reliability of Estimates. — The figures in this
report for 1961 and 1966 are census figures. The
estimates for 1967 are obtained by weighting the
sample survey figures on the basis of the 1966
Census population statistics adjusted for births,
deaths and migration between 1966 and 1967. The
changes shown during the year are affected by
sampling errors as well as by enumeration and
response differences. Accordingly, small changes
in the figures from year to year may not be significant as they reflect sampling error and enumeration differences as well as real changes that may
have occurred. For these reasons the provincial
family estimates published in Table 1 of the 1957
Report have been discontinued, the data now being
shown for regions only.
recensement.
Estimates of households in 1967 may be found
in the DBS report, "Household Facilities and
Equipment, May 1967".
