INTRODUCTION
The estimated number of families in Canada' on
June 1, 1975, was 5,564,000, an increase of 504,000
or 10.0%since the 1971 Census, and of 1,046,000 or
23.2% since the 1966 Census. The average number of
persons per family in Canada on June 1, 1975, was 3.5,
a slight decrease from the 1966 and 1971 Censuses.
The population living in families on June 1, 1975,
constituted 85.4% of the total population of Canada
on that date. Average family size was greatest in the
Atlantic Provinces at 3.8 persons per family, followed
by Quebec at 3.6 persons, the Prairie Provinces at 3.5
persons, Ontario at 3.4, while British Columbia had the
smallest average size at 3.3 persons per family.
rang (3.3).
Children in families - The number of children
per family in the 1971 and 1966 Censuses was 1.7 and
1.9, respectively. On June 1, 1975 the average decreased to 1.6 children per family.
The term "children per family" here refers to the
estimated number of unmarried children, under 25
years, living at home on June 1, 1975.
The combined number of families with no
children or only one child increased to 54.4% from
1971 and 1966 Census proportions which were 51.1%
and 48.4% respectively. Families with three or four
children, however, decreased to 18.3% of all families
on June 1, 1975 when compared to the 1971 and 1966
Census percentages of 20.6% and 21.9% respectively.
The families with five or more children in 1975 accounted for 4.8% of all families in Canada while in the
1971 Census the proportion was 7.1%.
The 1975 estimates show considerable variation
between regions in the different categories of families
by number of children. Families with no children, for
example, were only 28.7% of all families in the Atlantic
Provinces and 30.8%in Quebec, but constituted 33.1%
in Ontario, 34.2% of the total in the Prairie Provinces,
and 34.9% in British Columbia. On the other hand,
families comprising five or more children accounted for
8.5% of all families in the Atlantic Provinces, 6.3% in
Quebec, 4.2% in the Prairie Provinces, 3.7% in Ontario
and 2.6% in British Columbia.
Age of head - According to the 1975 family estimates for Canada, 34.0% of the heads of "husbandwife" families were under 35 years, 21.0% were between
35 and 44 years, 19.4% were between 45 and 54 years,
14.3% were between 55 and 64 years and 11.3% were
65 years and over.
I Excluding Yukon and Northwest Territories.

DEFINITIONS
DEFINITIONS
Family — As in the census definition, the family,
for purposes of these estimates, is defined as a group of
two or more persons living in the same dwelling and
related to one another either as husband and wife, with
or without unmarried children, or as parent and children.
Any other persons in the dwelling who might be related
to the family head were not, however, counted as
members of the family. Sometimes such persons would
constitute a second family in the dwelling. For example,
where a married son and his family are living in the
same dwelling as his parents there would be two families
in the same dwelling.
Children in families — Unmarried sons and daughters 24 years and under living with their parents were
classified as children in the family. Unmarried sons and
daughters 25 years and over living with their parents
were counted as family members but not as children.
Stepchildren and adopted children under 25 years were
included in the number of children in families. Guardianship children or wards, under 21 years, were similarly treated.
Coverage of data on family estimates — The May
1975 Labour Force Survey which supplied the sample
data on families for this report covered about 30,000
households in approximately 450 areas across Canada.
Although the survey excluded households of Indians
on reserves and households in institutions and military
camps, the estimates in this bulletin have been adjusted
in order to include families in these households. However,
the present estimates continue to exclude families in
the Yukon and Northwest Territories.
Reliability of estimates — The figures in this report for 1966 and 1971 are census figures. The estimates
for 1975 are obtained by weighting the sample survey
figures on the basis of the 1971 Census population
statistics adjusted for births, deaths, marriages, divorces
and migration between 1971 and 1975. The changes
shown during the year are affected by sampling errors
as well as by enumeration and response differences.
Accordingly, small changes in the figures from year to
year may not be significant as they reflect sampling
error and enumeration differences as well as real
changes that may have occurred.
Fiabilite des estimations — Les chiffres de 1966 et
1971 contenus ici sont ceux du recensement. On a etabli
Certain differences between these estimates and
those for 1974 are a result of methodological changes.
These changes are based on a study which was undertaken this year and which should be completed for the
next publication.
