BRITISH COLUMBIA ORGANIZATIONS FUNDED BY THE
CANADA COUNCIL, 2000-2001
The Canada Council awarded $8,750 to the Vancouver Asian Film Festival Society in
2000-2001. The grants were given under the Annual Assistance to Media Arts Festivals program.
The funding was used for the Vancouver Asian Film Festival that took place November 3-5, 2000.
The purpose of the festival is to provide a forum for independent Canadian and American Asian
filmmakers to showcase their work to both Asian and non-Asian audiences in Vancouver.
Communities represented in past festivals have included Korean, Japanese, Chinese (Taiwanese and
Cantonese), Vietnamese, Indo-Canadian, and Filipino communities.
Vancouver’s Grunt Gallery received grants totalling $87,400 from the Canada Council in
2000-2001. Grants were awarded through the Inter-Arts Program for Dissemination Grants, the
Outreach Program, and the Assistance to Artist-Run Centres program. Grunt is a centre in which
artists are able to work in an inclusive and informal setting on diverse and exploratory bodies of
work. Part of the centre’s programming focuses on performing art with eight performances in 2001.
These included a Performance/Installation by Italian artist Alberto Friggo and a
Performance/Publication by a group of Vancouver artists.
Black Sheep Books received grants from the Council’s Literary Reading and Festivals
program totalling $2,600 in 2000-2001. Black Sheep Books is a small independent bookstore which
focuses on quality titles which often are not available in other bookstores. The store hosts a reading
series that has included over 200 events over the past four years. They provide a showcase for both
local and internationally known authors. In March of 2000 they dedicated a night to “Roots”, a
UBC publication. During the event they showcased a number of the university’s talented young
writers. They have been especially recognized for their work in fostering Canadian poetry since their
literary readings began twelve years ago.
