Gallery 101
Gallery 101 received a $9,000 Outreach grant from the Canada Council for the Arts in 2000-2001. The
grant was used to pay for a delegation of six Canadian curators to travel, in November 2000, to Havana,
Cuba. The delegation was organized by Gallery 101 to ensure a Canadian presence at the Havana
Biennale in which no Canadian artists were represented. The curators also sought to establish contacts
and promote interaction and exchange with Latin America. By creating a Canadian presence in Latin
America, the delegation hoped to involve Canadian visual artists in the international arts scene. The
project proved to be successful, as the six curators were able to organize collaborations both within their
own group and with some Cuban artists. Several projects were planned for the future that involved art
shows in both Canada and Latin America.
Salon du Livre de Toronto
The Salon du Livre de Toronto received a $15,000 grant from the Canada Council’s program for Cooperative Projects in Writing and Publishing. The grant assisted in the cost of the 8 th Édition du Salon du
livre in Toronto, between October 12 and 15, 2000. The non-profit organization endeavors to distribute
and commercialize the work of French writers within Ontario. As well as promoting their works to the

public, the festival provides those working within the French publishing industry in Ontario the
opportunity to meet and form relationships with one another. The event also places a strong emphasis
on youth by involving students from immersion programs and French schools in Ontario in the Salon du
Livre’s activities.
Hot Docs! Canadian International Documentary Festival
With a $13,000 grant from the Canada Council for the Arts in 2000-2001, Hot Docs was able to complete
its most successful festival to date. The festival, which took place between April 30 and May 6, 2001 in
Toronto, is North America’s largest documentary festival, and has an international reputation for
excellence. This year’s festival saw a record number of sold-out screenings and line-ups around the block,
a testament to the festival’s increasing popularity. The festival celebrates Canadian and international
documentaries and their makers and promotes excellence in documentary production.
Christine Friday O’Leary
Ms. O’Leary was awarded a $10,000 grant through the Grants to Dance Professionals program from the
Canada Council for the Arts in 2000-2001. The grant was sought to establish an Aboriginal dance theatre
program for youth and to produce a collective work. The artists directing the theatre include Ms. O’Leary
who is a choreographer, dancer, project manager and performer as well as five other artists of diversified
backgrounds and skills. In combining the strengths of these artists they hope to compliment each other
and work as a team in differing leadership roles.
Karen Wierzba
Mississauga’s Karen Wierzba was awarded a $20,000 grant from the Canada Council to further her
professional development as an Opera singer. Ms. Wierzba was accepted by the National Opera Young
Artists Apprenticeship Program at the Opera national de Paris and won a competition for the use of the
La Cité internationale des Arts studio in Paris. Having studied extensively in apprenticeship programs in
Canada, Ms. Wierzba, now in her mid twenties, felt her career would benefit from international training
and performance. The Paris apprenticeship program allows students to train with some of the world’s
best coaches and work with leading singers by understudying roles in performances at the Paris Opera.
Theatre Orangeville
A $10,000 Theatre Production Project Grant from the Canada Council’s Established Artists’
Creation/Development program was awarded to Theatre Orangeville in 2000-2001. The theatre wished
to produce W.O. Mitchell’s “Jake and the Kid – Prairie Seasons” to be presented beginning in September
of 2000. The play fulfills the theatre’s mandate to develop the talents of young people and to create
Canadian works that tell stories for, by and about Canadians. The play calls for between 10 to 15 young
people as well as the role of “the Kid” for which the theatre selected young talent from the local
community. Thus young actors from the community receive the unique opportunity to learn by working
with experienced professional actors.
Gallery 101

L'organisme à but non
Le théâtre souhaitait produire Jake and the Kid – Prairie Seasons, de W.O.
