INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
For years other than census years, Statistics Canada published regularly postcensal estimates of the total population by age
and sex as of June 1, which are calculated
on the basis of the results of the preceding
census.
This publication contains preliminary
postcensal estimates of the population by
sex and age as of June 1, 1980, and final
postcensal estimates by sex and age as of
June 1, 1979. These latter estimates replace
the preliminary estimates for 1979 that were
published in the previous edition of this
publication.
septembre 1980.
It should be noted that, in the past,
Statistics Canada published only one series
of postcensal estimates by age and sex.
Beginning with June 1, 1977, two series of
postcensal estimates are published: prelimipostnary postcensal estimates and final
censal estimates. The final postcensal estimates will be revised at a later date in
light of the results of the 1981 Census in
population
order to provide intercensal
estimates (formely called "revised estimates") by age and sex. Catalogue 91-512,
Occasional (July 1973) and Catalogue 91-518,
Occasional (March 1979) contain the intercensal estimates for the periods 1921-1971
and 1971-1976 respectively.
A compter
periodes 1921-1976 respectivement.
Methodology
Methodologie
The final postcensal estimates for June
1, 1979 contained herein were obtained by
the component method, using the June 1, 1978
final postcensal estimates as the base population.
The demographic events that were experienced during the 12-month period commencing
June 1, 1978 by each cohort, which is
defined here as the total number of persons
born during a given census year, were compiled as follows: (the June 1, 1978 estimated population plus total immigrants)
minus (total deaths plus total emigrants).
The same mathematical procedure is applied
to individuals born during the period of
June 1, 1978 to May 31, 1979, who therefore
would have lived less than one complete year
by June 1, 1979. It is also necessary to add
the interprovincial net migration experienced by each province; obviously, the net
migration gains and losses sum to zero at
the national level. This produces a final
postcensal estimate for each age or age
group and each sex as of June 1, 1979.
-6The same method was employed to produce
the preliminary postcensal estimates for
June 1, 1980 except that in this case the
1979 final postcensal estimates were used as
the base population.

FAITS SAILLANTS
Sex Structure
Structure selon le Beim
In Quebec and in Ontario, there are 98
males per 100 females; the ratio in Canada
is 99. About 105 boys are born per 100
girls, but this male advantage decreases
slowly with age due to excess mortality
among males. The ratio drops below 100 for
good towards the age of 50 in Canada and
Ontario and at age 40 in Quebec.
40 ans.
After the age of 40, the sex ratio of
Quebec is consistently lower than those of
Ontario and Canada, except in the oldest
ages, where it is the Ontario ratio that
diverges from those of Canada and Quebec.
Canada and Quebec have sex ratios of 52 and
about 48 in the 85-89 and 90 and over age
groups respectively, as compared with the
very low ratios of 44 and 39 for Ontario.
Age Structure
Structure selon l'Age
Figure I shows the age pyramids of the
population for Canada, Quebec and Ontario as
of June 1, 1980. Because of differences in
size, all populations were reduced to
100,000 for purposes of comparison. The
shape of the pyramids of the two most populous provinces resembles that of the Canada
pyramid, a shape which stems both from the
effects of mortality, which progressively
reduces the size of successive age categories, and from the cohort effect on the age
structure determined as of June 1, 1980.
1980.
Each age pyramid of the two provinces in
this figure contains irregularities corresponding to certain cohort groups: indentations characterize the 1927-1938 cohorts,
protrusions the 1938-1963 cohorts, and a
narrowing at the base the 1963-1980
cohorts. These irregularities resemble those
found on the Canada pyramid, which were discussed in the November 1978 issue of this
publication. Also worthy of note is the
increasingly obvious broadening at the base
of the Canada and Quebec pyramids, a consequence of the coming of reproductive age of
the numerous 1946-1960 "baby boom" cohorts.
(generations 1963 A 1980) similaires A ceux
The similarities between the pyramids are
indicative of similar age structures. In
fact, since the Quebec and Ontario structures are similar, and since these two provinces accounted for over 3/5 (62.2%) of
Canada's total population as of June 1,
1980, it is logical for the Canada structure
to resemble them.

Quebec has a slightly younger age structure than its Ontarian neighbour. Ontario
has a larger proportion of old persons in
the over 40 age group, whereas Quebec has
alarger proportion of young adults in the
20-40 age group. The trough in the 5-9 age
group on the Quebec pyramid corresponds to
the significant decline in the birth rate,
which reached a low in 1973-74. The broadening at the base of this same pyramid stems
primarily from the coming of reproductive
age of the numerous "baby boom" cohorts;
moreover, the total fertility rate rose from
1.657 in 1974 to 1.748 five years later,
while declining steadily in Ontario, to
1.666 in 1979. The Canada age pyramid lies
midway between those of the two provinces.
provinces.
Broad Age Groups
Les grands groupes d'ages
In order to better assess the degree of
aging in the populations under study, we
shall examine, for 1961 and 1980, their distribution by broad age groups: children
(0-17 years), adults (18-64 years) and old

persons (65 years or over). The populations
of Canada, Quebec and Ontario are aging from
the bottom up; in other words, the proportion of elderly people is increasing because
the number of persons under 18 years of age
is decreasing (except for a slight increase
in Ontario), as Text Table II illustrates.
II.
As of June 1, 1980, there was little difference between the broad age groups of
Canada, Ontario and Quebec. Where differences do exist is in the evolution of the
populations since 1961. Between 1961 and
1980, the median age, which is a global
indicator of the age structure of a
population, increased by 1.5 years in
Ontario, 2.9 years in Canada and 5.3 years
in Quebec, leaving the three populations
with very similar structures.
Since 1961, Canada, Quebec and Ontario
have witnessed a decline in their 0-17 age
group and an increase in their 18-64 age
group as a proportion of their total population. The proportion of persons aged 65
years or over increased slightly in Ontario
and Canada and more substantially in
Quebec. The relative increase in the number
of adults is primarily attributable to the
significant decline in the birth rate in the
1960's and 1970's and to the coming of adult
age of the numerous cohorts born prior to
this phenomenon. This increase is also due
to a lesser extent to migration. Canada's
balance of migration for the years 1961
through 1980 was 1,179,200 persons, and
Ontario's balance (including interprovincial
migrants) was 989,200: since the migrants
are most often young adults, they swell the
ranks of the 18-64 age group. Quebec, on the
other hand, had a negative balance of migration during this period (-286,800 persons):
the departure of young adults ages the population.
Cet
accroissement rasulte agalement, dans une moindre
part, des mouvements migratoires. Le solde
migratoire canadien s'atablissait de 1961 a 1980
A 1,179,200 personnes et le solde ontarien,
a
Dependency Ratios
Les rapports de dependance
The various dependency ratios (for children, for the aged, and the total ratio)
also serve as useful indicators since they
provide information on the economic burden
borne by the adult population. Between 1961
and 1980, the total dependency ratio in
Canada declined from 0.871 to 0.622, or
29%. The Ontario and Quebec ratios declined
by 25% and 34% respectively over the same
period.
However, a breakdown of the total dependency ratio into ratios for children and the
aged shows that the lightening of the economic burden borne by the adult population
stems from a decline in the child dependency
ratio, in spite of an increase in the aged
dependency ratio. The widest variations were

child dependency ratio since 1961 coupled
with a 25% increase in the aged dependency
ratio. The corresponding figures for
Ontario are -32% and +7% respectively, while
the Canada ratios fall in between those of
the two provinces, although lying much
closer to the Ontario ratios.

Quality of Estimates
Qualitfi des estimations
The postcensal estimates contained in
this publication have a certain margin of
inaccuracy deriving both from the margin of
error for 1976 Census data, which are used
as the basis for the present postcensal
estimates, and from errors due to the
methods of estimating the components.
Among the errors which may originate with
census data are coverage errors and response
and processing errors. Coverage errors are
caused primarily by undercoverage, since
overcoverage is so rare as to be considered
negligible. For Canada as a whole, the overall undercoverage rate for the 1976 Census
was approximately 2%. The rate varies not
only from one province to another but also
by sex and age as shown in Text Table III.
tableau explicatif III.
The main response and processing errors
stem from non-responses, misinterpretation
of questions by the respondents and coding
and imputation errors. The response rate for
the 1976 Census question on age was 98.4%
and on sex 98.6%. For further details on the
total standard error associated with the
1976 Census figures, the publication Catalogue 92-823 may be consulted.

Unfortunately, little accurate information is available on the magnitude of error
resulting from estimates of the components
of population change. However, on the basis
of the quality of the data sources, the components can be divided into two categories:
the first consists of births, deaths and
immigration,(1) for which the sources can be
considered nearly perfect where final data
is used, and the second is international
emigration and interprovincial migration,
for which the method used to estimate the
number of emigrants and interprovincial
migrants by sex and age may increase the
risk of error.
d'erreur.
(1) This refers only to Canada's data on
legal immigration, which excludes illelegal immigrants and all former residents returning to the country after
absences of 12 months or more.
Despite this, given the size of the
errors observed at the end of the 1971-1976
intercensal period (see Text Table IV), the
present postcensal estimates should have an
acceptable degree of reliability, if it is
assumed that the quality of the basic data
remains constant. The reader should be cautious in interpreting these results, as the
undercoverage varies from one age group to
another and from one census to another. For
example, at 15-19 years in 1971 the undercoverage rate was 2.71%. In 1976, these
persons were 20-24 years of age, and their
undercoverage rate reached 5.99%.

Rapport de dependance
Although the total population is usually
sub-divided up into the following three
broad age groups for children (ages 0-14),
adults (ages 15-64), and aged persons (ages
65 and over), for purposes of calculating
the various dependency ratios in this report
the following age groups have been used:
children (ages 0-17), adults (ages 18-64),
and aged persons (ages 65 and over). The
following ratios may be defined on the basis
of this classification:
Bien qu'on a coutume de rfipartir is population
rapports suivants:
child dependency ratio, i.e., the number of
children per adult;

of aged persons per child.
