• The number of persons drawing unemployment
insurance benefit in March was 897,000,
down 22 from February but 2% higher than
in March 1976.
• En mars, le nombre de bénéficiaires de prestations d'assurance-chémage s'établissait 1

• Females comprised 362 of the beneficiaries
in March, about the same proportion as a
year earlier.

than regular benefit, mainly sickness and

Benefit Payments
Prestations servies
• Net disbursements in March were $426 million, an increase of 13% from the previous
month and 7% from March 1976.

• Residents of Quebec accounted for 37% of
the payments in March; Ontario, 26%; the

payments amounted to $1,199 million, a rise
of 11% from the same period in 1976. The
increase, for the most part, was attributed
to higher average weekly benefits which
reached $100.95.

Initial and Renewal Claims
Demandes initiales et demandes renouvelées
• Claims filed by persons seeking benefit in
March totalled 211,000, up 6% from February. The same percentage rise was recorded between February and March 1976.
• Le nombre de demandes prêsentées en mars a atteint 211,000, soit 6 7. de plus qu'en févrler.

• The claim load in March was 5% higher than
a year earlier when 201,000 claims were
received.

•During the first quarter of 1977, 678,000
claims were filed compared with 668,000 in
1976, an increase of 1%. Total claims were
fewer in the Atlantic provinces, British
Columbia and the Territories and greater
in the other provinces.
