Claimants qualifying for unemployment insurance benefits for the week ended
October 17 were 604,000, up 10% from
September and 4% more than in October
1980.

• Persons applying for unemployment insurance benefits in October filed 288,000
claims, a rise of 12% from September and
20% from October 1980.

The year-to-date claims totalled 2,223,000
compared with 2,177,000 in the January to
October period of 1980, an increase of 2%.
Claims were greater in all areas except
for Ontario which reported 7% fewer ,plications.
