number of persons receiving unemployment
insurance benefits stood at 1,249,000, up
10.2% over the previous month and 1.5%
over December 1983.

novembre 1984 et de 1.5% en regard de décembre

The average number of beneficiaries for
the year 1984 was 1,192,000. Compared with
1,248,000 for 1983, this represents a
decrease of 4.5%.
• La moyenne annuelle de bénéficiaires pour 1984
s'est établie b 1,192,000. Comparativement
1,248,000 pour 1983, ceci représente une baisse
Adjusted for seasonal variation, the
number of beneficiaries receiving regular
benefits with no earnings reported
declined slightly (-0.1%) between November
and December 1984. Decreases were observed
in Saskatchewan (-3.2%), Alberta (-0.7%),
British Columbia (-0.7%) and New Brunswick
(-0.3%). The number of beneficiaries
remained at the same level in Newfoundland
and increased in Prince Edward Island
(2.1%), Nova Scotia (0.9%), Manitoba
(0.7%), Ontario (0.2%) and Quebec (0.1%).

For December, benefit payments amounted to
$801.4 million, this is an increase of
6.1% over November 1984 and 6.4% as compared with December 1983.

• In 1984, the total benefits paid amounted
to $9.99 billion, this is 1.8% less than
the $10.17 billion disbursed during 1983.
The average weekly benefit reached
$161.62, advancing 4.4% over the previous
year.
En 1984 , le total des prestations payées s'est
établi b $9.99 milliards, soit 1.8% de moms
que les $10.17 milliards verses en 1983. La
prestation hebdomadaire moyenne s'est établie è
$161.62, en hausse de 4.4% par rapport b 1983.
• The number of benefit weeks declined by
7.1 00' to 61.9 million in 1984 from 66.6
million weeks in 1983. Between the two
years, significant changes were recorded
among the provinces. Increases were
observed in Prince Edward Island (12.5%),
Saskatchewan (5.4%), New Brunswick (3.8%)
and Newfoundland (3.4%) while declines,
ranging from -16.8% in Ontario to -1.4% in
Nova Scotia, were noticed for the other
provinces.

• Initial and renewal claims received during
December nunbered 326,900, this represents
decreases, with respect to November 1984
and December 1983, of 19.0% and 1.1%.

• For the year 1984, 3.49 million claims
were received, 1.7% more than were
registered during 1983. The number of
claims increased in all provinces, excepting the Yukon (-3.8%), Alberta (-1.8%),
Ontario (-1.0%) and Newfoundland (-0.4%).
For the remaining provinces the advances
ranged from 1.3% in New Brunswick to 6.2 10
in Saskatchewan.
