MOSLEY ELECTRONICS Antenna User Manual

Below you will find brief information for Antenna. This manual describes how to check and repair MOSLEY trap-type antenna systems. It includes detailed instructions on how to test the standing-wave-ratio (SWR) on all bands, as well as how to troubleshoot common problems like high SWR readings. The manual also provides information on how to disassemble and reassemble trap assemblies. The information is applicable to any MOSLEY dipole, beam, or vertical antenna system.

Frequently asked questions

You can check SWR on all bands of operation by using a standing-wave-ratio (SWR) meter. This should be done every 100 kHz in and out of the band. Make sure your measuring instrument is accurate and that the proper connection is used. Nothing should be installed between the SWR instrument and the antenna except the connecting transmission line.

If you have a high SWR on all bands, check the transmission line and its connections. Also, check the overall antenna lengths up to the highest frequency resonant circuit.

If you have a high SWR on the lower resonant frequencies but a normal SWR on the highest resonant frequency, it indicates that something is wrong with the outer resonant circuit. This portion of the trap assembly is located on the outboard ends of the antenna, furthest from the center on a beam or dipole or furthest above ground on a vertical.

To disassemble a trap assembly, begin by pulling the trap seals from the ends of the trap assemblies. The seals can be removed without damaging them. Remove the outer screw terminating the wire. Place one hand on the cover and the other hand around the small tubing, keeping your thumb on the wire. Pull the assembly apart while keeping the wire from unwinding or losing tension. Tape the unterminated wire to the plastic coil form and inspect the coil form for damage. The instructions pertinent to the antenna being inspected usually give the number of turns and overall antenna lengths.
