Cummins Onan | 1
Warranty
The Cummins Onan Limited Warranty
for Marine Generators covers the
generators for a period of five (5) years
or 2,000 hours, whichever occurs first,
from date of delivery to the first retail
purchaser. This coverage applies to the
original owner and all subsequent
owners for the duration of the
coverage—at no additional charge or
deductibles for the customer. Parts,
labor including diagnostic labor, limited
travel, and removal and reinstallation
are covered for the first and second
years on virtually everything except
routine maintenance. Parts, labor and
travel on selected power train and
generator parts are warranted for the
remaining years or 2,000 hours.
The warranty is administered by the
Cummins Onan Distributor/Dealer
network whom, in most cases, is the
same network that administers the
Cummins MerCruiser Diesel and
Cummins Marine propulsion engine
warranty, providing a one stop shop for
your power needs and service.

Accessories and
Options
Cummins Onan offers a variety of
commonly used accessories and
options. Following is a partial list of
categories of accessories and options
available. For accessories catalogs or

Accessories available include sound
shields, remote-mounted digital
displays, harnesses, AC transfer
switches, DC terminal boot kit,
batteries, siphon break, mufflers,
exhaust water separators, resonators,
fuel water separator, hose barbs, and
pipe adapters; and conversion kits
including set-mounted digital displays,
belt covers, low coolant level switch,
AC output breakers, keel cooling,
exhaust outlet, power take-off (PTO),
and isolated ground conversions.
Options that are available when you
order the generator (factory-installed)
include 12 or 24 V DC, sound shields,
set-mounted digital displays, low
coolant level shutdown, keel cooling,
dry exhaust, front power take-off (PTO),
and others.

Diagnostics
The diagnostic features were designed
with the customer in mind. Most
generators will trip a breaker when
something has gone wrong, however,
you’re never really sure what happened.
With the information the diagnostic
indicator provides, knowing what
happened may make the difference
between enjoying your weekend outing
or waiting for a service call. If a service
call is required, the knowledge you
have to give the service technician will
expedite the repair and get you on your
way as quickly as possible. Our goal is
to make boating even more enjoyable.
Cummins Onan generators have a
number of self-protective shutdowns
including high engine coolant
temperature, high exhaust temperature,
low oil pressure, over speed, over
voltage, no raw water flow, and many
others.

Electronic control
Following a protective shutdown, the
status light on the generator will
repeatedly blink a 1 or 2 digit code. A
chart, mounted on the generator,
provides an explanation of common
faults such as high engine coolant
temperature, high exhaust temperature,
or low oil pressure. Additional fault
codes and troubleshooting tips are
listed in the Operator’s Manual. You can
also view fault codes in text on the
digital display, if the boat is so
equipped, or through network
communications on various displays.
These fault codes assist the operator or
service personnel in evaluating a variety
of other operating conditions and
service checks. As many as 31 fault
and warning codes can be displayed.
Many times the boat owner is able to
determine the cause of the shutdown
and fix it himself. If service is required,
the boat owner has access to
diagnostic information the service
person can use to assist in correcting
the problem.

Cummins Onan Digital Display
The Cummins Onan Digital Display,
makes it easy for the user to monitor
generator operation. The user can view
generator status, including AC voltage,
AC frequency, coolant temperature, oil
pressure, battery voltage, and
generator hours; be alerted to a prealarm condition; and, if the generator
shuts down, view the notification and
diagnostic message in text. In addition,
the panel provides a remote start/stop
and a visual indication of generator
status to let you know the generator
is running, is in a pre-alarm mode, or
has stopped.

Starting Procedure
The Cummins Onan smart technology
makes starting the generator easy and
trouble-free. The generator can be
started from the start/stop switch which
is standard on every generator, or a
remote-mounted start/stop switch as
with other QD models, or from the
digital display.
Starting—using the
start/stop switch
To start, simply push and hold the start
switch until the green light comes on;
then the operator can release the start
switch. To turn off the generator, simply
push the stop switch to stop.
Starting—using the Cummins
Onan Digital Display
The digital display is easy to turn on by
simply pressing any button on the
display. To start the generator, push
and hold the start button until the
blinking green light stays on. To stop,
press the stop button.

complete instructions.

With a single touch of the start switch,
the control automatically:
> Runs through a self check
> Activates fuel pump priming
> Checks engine coolant temperature
> Energizes glow plugs for
appropriate amount of time based
on coolant temperature (2–15
seconds)
> Begins cranking the starter
> Disengages starter automatically
when reaching 800 rpm
> Displays green run light when
generator reaches 60/50 Hz
> Glow plugs remain on for 2–5
seconds (post glow) after start
based on coolant temperature to
improve combustion and reduce
smoke
