What is UFO®micro EXU 544?
UFO®micro EXU 544 is a small, handy component of only 32 x 20 x 7 cm, which allows simple, inexpensive distribution of satellite TV and
radio programmes.
Depending on the requirements, one or several
EXU 544 can be used, making it possible to plan
and install a reception system with 4 to 72
subscribers.
It is so easy…
...for example, to prepare a ”triple alliance” system
for reception of satellite programmes.
In the example, three EXU 544 supply signals to up
to a maximum of twelve receivers (twin receivers
are considered as two receivers), even when more
than twelve antenna sockets have been installed.
The conversion of existing distribution systems
requires that also the unused outlets must be
exchanged with UFO®micro sockets ESU 31/
ESU 32.
Naturally, systems for single or two family houses
or for apartment blocks are also feasible.

And here is how it works:
Each EXU 544 single-cable matrix is designed
for connecting up to 4 subscribers (receivers).
The input of the matrix consists of a 4-way loopthrough matrix with 4 associated remotely controllable Sat IF/Sat IF converters with 36 MHz
bandwidth, a diplexer for feeding in terrestrial or
CATV signals in the frequency range 47-862
MHz, a loop-through output for cascading up to
three EXU 544 (maximum of 12 subscribers) and
an integrated switched mode power supply unit,
which supplies power to the LNB.
The EXU 544 can be further cascaded at the
inputs in order to feed more than 12 subscribers.
At the outputs, a new system segment should
be set up. However, if possible, smaller system
segments (four or eight subscribers) should be
set up.
The matrix distribution amplifier VWS 500, the
Sat distribution amplifier VWS 551 and the Sat IF
splitter EBX 520 can be used just as for
conventional matrix distribution systems.
For the reception of two or several satellites
(multifeed) with up to a total of eight satellite
planes, two single-cable matrices EXU 544 are
necessary for every four subscribers (receivers).
What is special about the UFO®micro
system and where is it used?
UFO®micro allows you to receive all satellite TV
and radio programmes receivable in Europe in
your living room.
If you are already connected to a cable system
but wish to receive additional satellite
programmes, EXU 544 makes it possible.
Ideal replacement for extending existing singlecable systems to receive the complete array of
programmes.
The application of EXU 544 allows you to continue using the existing coaxial network structure.
You do not have to lay new cables, unless the
existing cabling is defective or no longer complies with the current regulations. Installation
work, dirt and other inconveniences relating to
changing the coaxial cable network no longer
apply. All you have to do is simply exchange the
existing sockets and splitters with UFO®micro
compatible components.
Prerequisites for the installation of
UFO®micro?
Receivers equipped with the UFO®micro command.
These are:
1. All Kathrein receivers from the 400 series. These
allow reception of analogue satellite signals as
well as ASTRA digital radio programmes (ADR
only with UFD 430, UFD 440).
2. The Kathrein DVB receivers UFD 505,
UFD 505/S, UFD 515, UFD 515/S, UFD 540,
UFD 554, UFD 554/S and UFE 235 as well as
the CityCom DVB receivers CCR 502, CCR
502/S, CCR 512 and CCR 512/S are capable of
receiving digital satellite signals.
Special sockets.
Kathrein has developed the ESU 31 and ESU 32
socket for the UFO®micro system.
The last socket in the distribution line must be
terminated with the terminating resistors ERA 14
(with isolating capacitor).
Other features and details:
Easy installation and putting into operation.
Also suitable for systems with a larger number of
subscribers.
Replacement for single-cable systems.
Multifeed compatible.
Combinations with switching matrices are
possible.
The inputs of the EXU 544 are connected the
same as are the inputs of a matrix (EXR 5xx).
Whenever a satellite receiver is switched on, the
subscriber frequency changes, preventing a subscriber to make out which programme another
subscriber is watching (privacy protection).
For low power consumption, the EXU 544
switches to ”standby” once the receivers are
switched to ”standby” mode or switched
off.
Extends the array of broadband cable
programmes with satellite programmes,
because the CATV signals in the frequency
range from 47 to 862 MHz are only passively fed in.
In the year 2000, the single-cable matrix
EXU 544 was awarded the innovation prize.
The Bavarian state government only awards
this prize to ten outstanding developments
every two years.
To sum up:
The following system components are required for
satellite reception in conjunction with the UFO®micro:
1. One or several UFO®micro EXU 544 (depending on
how many subscribers you want to connect).
2. UFO®micro compatible Kathrein splitters (EBC 20,
EBC 30 and EBL 44).
3. The respective number of UFO®micro sockets ESU
31 or ESU 32 and terminating resistors ERA 14.
Two terminating resistors ERA 14 are included in
the scope of delivery of each EXU 544.
Set up UFO®micro systems either with ESU 32 or
ESU 31.
4. Kathrein receivers with integrated UFO®micro
command facility.
5. Easy and quick cascading of several EXU 544 is
possible with the 4-way connection element
EMU 40 or the connection cable EVL 165 (must be
ordered separately, not in the scope of delivery).
6. If you are connected to a broadband cable
system, but would like to receive additional
satellite programmes, a Kathrein parabolic antenna
CAS xxx and a feed system UAS xxx are required.

UFO®micro sockets ESU 31/ESU 32
The UFO®micro antenna sockets ESU 31 and ESU 32 have
been specifically developed for the UFO®micro single-cable
matrix system.
The sockets comply with the EN 50083-1/A1 and EN 500832/A1.
ESU 31 and ESU 32 are directional coupler sockets for loopthrough systems (ESU 31 with 2 x Sat, 1 x FM/TV; ESU 32 with
1 x Sat, 1 x TV, 1 x FM).
The DC voltage is fed through the Sat connection(s) with max.
24 V/60 mA, 22 kHz and DiSEqC.
They are equipped with a safety circuit for protection against
malfunctions caused by receivers not programmed to or not
compatible with the UFO®micro system.
The voltage delivered from the receiver to the trunk is cut,
once an overload is recognized.
The housing is made of robust cast aluminium.
Suitable for installation with screw or claw fixing in insulating
boxes of 55-65 mm Ø.
The sockets can be combined with almost all installation
systems.
The last socket in the distribution line must be terminated with
the terminating resistor ERA 14 (isolating capacitor).
