introduction

Thank you for purchasing an a/d/s/ bandpass subwoofer system. Please read the following instructions carefully. Following these instructions will ensure that your system will deliver the best possible performance.

Caution: To reduce risk of injury because of an accident or sudden stop, properly mount the subwoofer enclosure to the vehicle.

about this manual

These subwoofers can be used with factory or aftermarket loudspeakers to extend the bass response of the system by an octave or more. They are designed to be powered by an amplifier with a minimum of 25 watts of power. They are not intended to be powered by a head unit.

The a/d/s/ ie 6.1 / ie 6.2 subwoofers are sophisticated tuned bandpass designs, that are computer optimized for maximum listening enjoyment and performance.

The speakers in these a/d/s/ subwoofers feature oxygen-free copper wire voice coils wound on Kapton formers for maximum efficiency, fidelity and power handling. Butyl rubber surrounds allow long cone excursion while providing superior control of cone motion to ensure low distortion. The spider is made out of Nomex and is extremely durable to meet the harsh demands of high performance car audio.

keep listening, but be safe!

Sustained listening to loud music over 100dB has been shown to cause permanent hearing damage. Systems using a/d/s/ components are capable of achieving volume levels which substantially exceed this level. When operating your system for sustained periods at high volume, be sure to use hearing protection to pre v e n t l o n g - t e rm exposure. We want you to be able to enjoy the music for many more years.

warranty

There are two things you must do to ensure trouble free service in the event you need warranty repairs.

1. Keep your original sales receipt in a safe place. A copy of the receipt will be re q u i red to obtain warranty serv i c e .

2. Be sure your retail dealer has written the date, model number and serial number (if applicable) of the product on the receipt. To give yourself an extra measure of protection, make a separate record of the information about your purchase and keep it in a safe place. In the event you misplace the sales receipt, your dealer may be able to give you a copy.

Take a moment now to read the terms of your warranty. Check to be sure your sales receipt is dated and has the product model number and serial number (if applicable) on it. Then put it away in a safe place.

When shipping a Product in for service:

• Enclose a copy of your original sales receipt that has the date, product model number and serial number (if applicable) written on it.

Always ship Products in the complete original packing material.

Avoid shipping Products via the postal service. If you must use the postal service, be sure to register and insure the package.

a/d/s/ Limited Warranty

Analog and Digital System, Inc. (a/d/s/) warrants to the original consumer purchaser of the a/d/s/ Products described in this manual, that the Product will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one (1) year after the date of purchase, if the Product is installed by an authorized a/d/s/ retail dealer, the warranty is extended to three (3) years. a/d/s/’ sole obligation under the warranty shall be to provide, without charge, parts and labor necessary to remedy the defects, if any, that appear during the warranty period.

This warranty is the sole and exclusive express warranty given with respect to the Product. All other express warranties are hereby excluded. Neither a/d/s/ not the authorized dealer who sells the Product is responsible for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages. Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state.

IMPORTANT – This warranty does not cover:

• Damage that is the result of misuse, abuse, accident (including but not limited to damage by water), faulty hookup, defective or maladjusted associated equipment, or the use of the Product with equipment of which it was not intended.

• Cosmetic defects that appear more than thirty (3) days after the date of purchase. Cosmetic damage caused by improper handling is also excluded.

Products that are used for commercial purposes.

The cost of removing or reinstalling the Product.

Damage that occurs while the Product is being shipped to whoever will service it. See the infor-

• mation above regarding shipping procedures.

This warranty is void if:

• The Product identification or serial number is removed or defaced in any way.

The Product is serviced or repaired by anyone other than a/d/s/ or an authorized a/d/s/ dealer or service agency.

Original sales receipt:

• Be sure the retail dealer has written on it the date, model number and serial number (if applicable) of the Product. This information is required for warranty service.

This warranty is limited to:

• Products purchased from authorized a/d/s/ retail dealers in the United States. a/d/s/ will supply a list of authorized dealers on request.

In order to obtain warranty service you must:

• Return the Product, freight prepaid, to the a/d/s/ dealer from which it was purchased, an Autho-

• rized a/d/s/ independent service agency, or to a/d/s/., If necessary you may call a/d/s/ Customer

S e rvice Department for the names and address of authorized independent service agencies in your are a .

Provide proof of purchase in the form of a copy of your original sales receipt. The date, model number and serial number (if applicable) of the Product must be written on the sales receipt.

audio adjustments

Adjust the gain of the subwoofer amplifier to blend in with the midrange and high frequency speakers.

Ideally the amplifier powering the ie subwoofer has an electronic crossover, If it does adjust it for the best sound quality, the crossover setting should be between 50-100 Hz. If the amplifier does not have an electronic crossover, a 5 mH coil in series with the enclosure is acceptable. If the system is lacking mid-bass response reverse the speaker wires to the ie subwoofer and listen again. If the mid-bass response improves leave it alone, if not return the wires to the original position.

1. First turn factory radio to 3/4 volume.

unpacking

These subwoofers are heavy. Rather than lifting the unit out of the shipping carton, turn the open carton over, and lift it off the subwoofer. Then remove the packing corners from the subwoofer and then remove it from the plastic bag.

placement

Unlike high frequency sound, our ears have difficulty locating the source of deep bass sounds.

Consequently, you have a fair amount of flexibility in where you place the subwoofer in your vehicle.

Typically the subwoofer is mounted in rear of the vehicle, either in the trunk, hatchback, or rear cargo area. For proper performance the port must not be closer than 3" from any walls, this will cause the performance to suffer. The enclosure can stand up or lie it on its side.

2. Turn up/down gain to blend with mid and high speakers.

3. Adjust crossover of amplifier for best sound.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until desired sound is achieved.

mounting locations

Brackets are supplied for mounting the enclosure either vertically or horizontally. Remove the proper screws from the enclosure and replace the screws through the bracket and then into the enclosure.

Repeat for the other side. Screw the enclosure into the floor of the vehicle being careful to note where brake and fuel lines run on the other side. Do not mount the enclosure directly against a hard surface with out first putting down a piece of felt or cloth to prevent buzzes and rattles. Check to make sure that the enclosure screws are tightened properly, failure to do so may cause unwanted air leaks. Check to make sure that the screws mounting the enclosure to the floor are secure and tight.

warnings and tips

Always disconnect the battery ground wire before doing any work on your vehicle. Reconnect the cable only after the installation is complete and the wiring has been checked to make sure that there are no problems. If your radio features a code type security system, be sure you know the code before disconnecting the battery!

system configurations

The ie series subwoofers are designed to integrate with a wide variety of full range speakers. A typical installation consists of a factory stereo system driving an external amplifier powering the ie series subwoofer. A more advanced system utilizes separate midrange and hi frequency speakers and multichannel amplification, such as an a/d/s/ PH30 amplifier powering 346is speakers front and rear along with an ie series subwoofer.

factory upgrade speaker connections

The ie series subwoofers have a terminal cup mounted on one end of the speaker enclosure. One terminal is labeled + (red) and the other one is – (black). Connect the positive (+) wire of the amplifier to the positive (+) wire of the speaker enclosure. Then connect the negative (-) wire of the amplifier to the negative (-) wire of the speaker enclosure.

advanced system maintenance

Normal maintenance of the subwoofer consists of keeping the unit clean and dust-free. Use a soft cloth or brush to remove dust without scratching or marring the finish. Do not use strong cleaners or solvents of any kind. Avoid spray cleaners or waxes, they can produce spotty glossy areas.

No sound

Buzzes and rattles

Check the speaker cables connected to the inputs of the subwoofer.

Locate the source of the noise and secure it. Place carpet, or felt under the subwoofer then securely mount it down.
