Quick Setup Guide I NS-R5101HD 5.1 Receiver Congratulations on your purchase of a high-quality Insignia product. Your 5.1-channel surround sound receiver is designed for reliable and troublefree performance. Use this guide for initial setup of your receiver. If you have questions, see your User Guide for more information. 1 Install remote control batteries Remove the cover from the back of the remote control, insert the batteries as indicated in the battery compartment, then replace the cover. 2 Connect speakers Position speakers around your room and connect as shown. Loosen cap, insert speaker wire into the side, then tighten cap. Remote control ON/STANDBY Press to turn on your receiver or put it in standby mode during normal operation. Speaker On/Off Press to turn off speakers when using headphones or TV speakers. Input Selector Turn the knob to switch between components such as tuner, DVD, CD, or TV. Volume FM antenna AM loop antenna Power Press to turn off main power before connecting components. Headphone Jack BAND Press to select the radio band, FM, FM-MONO, or AM. Tuning/Preset Press TUNING buttons to choose an AM or FM radio station. Press PRESET buttons to choose a saved station. Video 3 Input Connect a game console or video camera here. 3 Connect devices, continued For each device, plug one end of the cable into the back of your receiver. Plug the other end into the device you are connecting. Use the input buttons on your remote control to switch between devices. SURROUND BACK PRE OUTS To extend your system to 7.1, connect the PRE OUT SURROUND BACK to a powered amplifier connected to speakers. A separate amp is necessary to make these speakers work. AUDIO IN GAME/AUX2 L/R Connect the audio for the GAME/AUX 2 device. SUBWOOFER PRE OUT Connect a powered subwoofer to this SUBWOOFER PRE OUT jack. CD IN L/R AUDIO Connect a CD player to these jacks. MONITOR OUT Connect a TV to this jack, using a Composite cable (not included). VIDEO IN GAME AUX2 Connect a VCR to these VIDEO DVD IN jacks, using a Composite Connect a Blu-ray Disc player or DVD player to this cable (not included). jack, using a Composite cable (not included). COAXIAL IN1 Connect a coaxial digital audio device to this jack. TV IN AUDIO L/R Connect the audio for a TV to hear its sound through your receiver. COMPONENT VIDEO OUT Connect a TV to these jacks, using a Component cable (not included). COMPONENT VIDEO INPUT 1 and 2 Connect a DVD player, set-top box, or other component using a Component cable (not included). ANTENNA GND/AM Loop Connect the FM and AM loop antennas to listen to radio broadcasts. DVD IN AUDIO L/R Connect the audio for the device connected to the COMPONENT VIDEO IN 1 (DVD) jacks or the VIDEO DVD IN jack. CD player Connecting a VCR To connect a VCR: 1 Connect a standard video cable to the VIDEO IN GAME/AUX2 jack on the back of your receiver and to the VIDEO OUT jack on the VCR. Connecting a TV Connecting a Blu-ray Disc player or DVD player To connect a Blu-ray Disc player or DVD player using HDMI (Best): • Connect an HDMI cable to the HDMI IN DVD jack on the back of your receiver and to the HDMI OUT jack on the player. To connect a Blu-ray Disc player or DVD player using component video (Better): 1 Connect a component video cable to the COMPONENT VIDEO IN 1 (DVD) jacks on the back of your receiver and to the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT jacks on the player. To connect a cable or satellite box using CABLE/SAT box using component video (Better): 1 Connect a component video cable to the COMPONENT VIDEO IN 2 (CABLE/SAT) jacks on the back of your receiver and to the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT jacks on the player. Blu-Ray Disc player or CABLE/SAT box Blu-Ray Disc player or CABLE/SAT box To connect a cable or satellite box using CABLE/ SAT box using standard (composite) video (Good): 1 Connect a standard video cable to the VIDEO CABLE/SAT IN jack on the back of your receiver and to the VIDEO OUT jack on the player. To connect a TV using standard (composite) video (Good): Connect a standard (composite) video cable to the MONITOR OUT jack on the back of your receiver and to the VIDEO IN jack on the TV. Blu-Ray Disc player or CABLE/SAT box To connect a TV to hear its sound through the receiver: Connect an audio cable to the TV IN AUDIO L/R jacks on the back of your receiver and to the AUDIO OUT jacks on the TV. NOTE: When viewing video program sources through MONITOR OUT jack, you must use the same type of video jacks that you did connect to video playback components such as Blu-ray Disc player, DVD player, or cable TV tuner. CABLE/ SAT NOTE: An HDMI cable carries both video and audio. You do not need to make an audio connection. 2 Connect an audio cable to the CABLE/SAT IN AUDIO L/R jacks on the back of your receiver and to the AUDIO OUT jacks on the player or use digital (noted below) for better Audio experience. 2 Connect an audio cable to the AUDIO IN CABLE/SAT jacks on the back of your receiver and to the AUDIO OUT jacks on the player or use digital (noted below) for better Audio experience. Connecting a device to the front AV jacks Connecting digital audio To connect a device to the front AV jacks: 1 Connect a standard (composite) video cable to the AUX 1 VIDEO jack on the front of your receiver and to a standard video device. 2 Connect an audio cable to the AUX 1 L/R jacks on the front of your receiver and to the audio out jacks on the device. To connect digital audio: 1 Connect the video for a device to the CD, GAME/AUX2, DVD, or CABLE/SAT video jack(s). 2 Connect the digital audio for the device to a digital audio jack on the back of your receiver. • If the device has a coaxial digital audio jack, connect a 75Ω coaxial digital audio cable to the COAXIAL IN 1 (DVD) jack on the back of your receiver and to the COAXIAL OUT jack on the digital audio device. Or, • If the device has an optical digital audio jack, connect an optical digital audio cable to the OPTICAL IN 1 (GAME/AUX2) or OPTICAL IN 2 (CABLE/SAT) jack on the back of your receiver and to the OPTICAL OUT jack on the digital audio device. 3 Press input selector button on the remote control (CD, GAME/AUX2, DVD, or CABLE/SAT) to select the video jack(s) the device is connected to, then press D.INPUTS one or more times to select the audio jack(s) the device is connected to. Each time you press D.INPUTS the audio source changes from O(ptical) 1, to O(ptical) 2, to C(oaxial) 1, H(DMI), or A(nalog). NOTE: If you press select CD, you cannot select HDMI as the audio source. NOTE: The default settings are as for the digital audio jacks are: • OPTICAL IN 1 for devices connected to the video GAME/AUX 2 jack. • OPTICAL IN 2 for devices connected to the video CABLE/SAT jack. • COAXIAL IN 1 for devices connected to DVD video jack. 4 Connect power 1. 2. 3. 5 Complete setup Connect the power cord to a power outlet. Press POWER on the front of your receiver. Press STANDBY/ON on the receiver or POWER ON on your remote control to turn on the receiver. Adjust speaker settings with Auto Setup 1. Connect the supplied microphone to the SETUP MIC jack on the front of your receiver. • Press the input buttons on your remote control or rotate the INPUT SELECTOR knob on the front of your receiver to switch between devices. See “Selecting the input source” in your User Guide for more information. • Press the SOUND PARAMETER button on your remote control to adjust the sound parameter. See “Adjusting sound parameters” in your User Guide for more information.
