Frequently asked questions

To balance the telescope on the R.A. axis, loosen the lock lever and slide the counterweights along the shaft until they exactly counterbalance the telescope. To balance on the Dec. axis, loosen the lock lever and slide the telescope forward or back in the tube rings until it remains horizontal when you let go.

Point the main telescope at a distant object, center it in the field of view, and then adjust the finder scope's alignment screws until the object is also centered on the finder's crosshairs.

Level the mount, set the latitude scale to your observing site, and point the R.A. axis roughly at Polaris. Then use the polar axis finder scope to center Polaris in the small circle by rotating the tripod and adjusting the latitude T-bolts.

Calibrate the setting circles using a bright star near the celestial equator. Then look up the coordinates of the object you want to view and rotate the telescope until the R.A. and Dec. values on the setting circles match those in the star atlas.
