IMPORTANT
RULES FOR SAFE OPERATION
THIS SYMBOL POINTS OUT IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS WHICH, IF NOT FOLLOWED, COULD ENDANGER THE PERSONAL SAFETY
AND/OR PROPERTY OF YOURSELF AND OTHERS. READ AND FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS IN THIS MANUAL BEFORE ATTEMPTING
TO OPERATE YOUR LAWN MOWER. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY. WHEN
YOU SEE THIS SYMBOL— A HEED ITS WARNING.
A
А Y DancER 3
Your lawn mower was built to be operated according to the rules for safe operation in this manual. As
with any type of power equipment, carelessness or error on the part of the operator can result in serious
injury. If you violate any of these rules, you may cause serious injury to yourself or others.
RAINING
1. Read this owner's guide carefully in its entirety before attempting
1
to assemble or operate this machine. Be completely familiar with
the controls and the proper use of this machine betore operating
it. Keep this manual in a safe place for future and regular reference
and for ordering replacement parts.
. Your rotary mower is a precision piece of power equipment, not
a plaything. Therefore, exercise extreme caution at all times.
. Never allow children to operate a power mower. Only persons well
acquainted with these rules of safe operation should be allowed
to use your mower.
. Keep the area of operation clear of all persons, particularly smail
children and pets. Stop engine when they are in the vicinity of
your mower to help prevent blade contact or thrown object in-
jury. Although the area of operation should be completely cleared
of foreign objects, an object may have been overlooked and could
be accidently thrown by the mower in any direction and cause
serious personal injury to the operator or any others allowed in
the area.
Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used
PREPARATION |
A “ Remove all stones, sticks, wire, bones and other foreign objects
which could be picked up and thrown by the mower in any direc-
tion and cause serious personal injury to the operator or any others
allowed in the area.
. Always wear safety glasses or eye shields during operation or while
performing an adjustment or repair, to protect eyes from foreign
objects that may be thrown from the machine in any direction.
. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and close-fitting slacks and
shirts to avoid entanglement in the moving parts. Never operate
a unit in bare feet, sandals, or sneakers.
. Check the fuel before starting the engine. Gasoline is an extreme-
ly flammable fuel. Do not fill the gasoline tank indoors, while the
engine is running, or until engine has been allowed to cool for
two minutes after running. Replace gasoline cap securely and wipe
off any spilled gasoline before starting the engine as it may cause
a fire or explosion.
. Disengage the self-propelled mechanism or drive clutch on units
so equipped before starting the engine.
. The blade control handle is a safety device. Never attempt to bypass
its operation. Doing so makes the safety device inoperative and
may result in personal injury through contact with the rotating
blade. The blade control handle must operate easily in both
directions.
. Never attempt to make a wheel or cutting height adjustment while
the engine is running.
. Never operate the equipment in wet grass. Always be sure of your
footing. A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury. Keep
a firm hold on the handle and walk, never run. Mow only in daylight
or in good artificial light.
9.
For your safety, use the slope gauge included as part of this manual
to measure slopes before operating this unit on a sloped or hilly
area. If the slope is greater than 15° as shown on the slope gauge,
do not operate this unit on that area or serious injury could result.
Do not change the engine govemor settings or overspeed the
A
1. i
engine. Excessive engine speeds are dangerous.
2.
10.
11.
Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts. Keep clear
of the discharge opening at all times as the rotating blade can
cause injury.
. Stop the blade when crossing gravel drives, walks or roads.
. After striking a foreign object, stop the engine, remove the wire
from the spark plug, and thoroughly inspect the mower for any
damage. Repair the damage before restarting and operating the
mower.
. If the equipment should start to vibrate abnormally, stop the engine
and check immediately for the cause. Vibration is generally a warn-
ing of trouble.
. Shut the engine off and wait until the blade comes to a complete
stop before removing the grass catcher or unclogging the chute.
The cutting blade continues to rotate for a few seconds after the
engine is shut off. Never place any part of the body in the blade
area until you are sure the blade has stopped rotating.
. Before cleaning, repairing or inspecting, make certain the blade
and all moving parts have stopped. Disconnect the spark plug wire,
and keep the wire away from the spark plug to prevent accidental
starting.
. Do not run the engine indoors.
‚ Mow across the face of slopes, never up-and-down. Exercise ex-
treme caution when changing direction on slopes. Do not mow
excessively steep slopes. Always be sure of your footing. À slip
and fall can cause serious personal injury.
Never operate mower without proper guards, plates or other safety
protective devices in place.
Do not operate this mower with the chute door open, unless the
complete grass catcher or chute deflector is properly mounted
on the mower.
Check the blade and engine mounting bolts at frequent intervals
1 MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE

for proper tightness.
2.
3.
Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight to be sure the equipment
is in safe working condition.
Never store the equipment with gasoline in the tank inside of a
building where fumes may reach an open flame or spark. Allow
the engine to cool before storing in any enclosure.
. To reduce fire hazard, keep the engine free of grass, leaves, or
excessive grease.
. Check the grass catcher bag frequently for wear or deterioration.
For safety protection, replace only with new bag meeting original
equipment specifications.

GRASS CATCHER IS IN ITS PROPER PLACE.
KEEP HANDS and FEET AWAY
FIGURE 21.
Keep hands and feet away from the chute area on cut-
ting deck. See figure 21.
The operation of any lawn mower can result in
foreign objects being thrown into the eyes, which
oa can result in severe eye damage.
Always wear safety glasses or eye
shields. We recommend wide vision
safety mask for over spectacles or
standard safety glasses.
NOTE: For best results raise the cutting position until
it is determined which height is best for your lawn. See
cutting height adjustment section.
GAS AND OIL FILL-UP
Service the engine with gasoline and oil as instructed
in the separate engine manual packed with your
mower. Read instructions carefully.
A been allowed to cool for at least two
minutes after running.
BEFORE STARTING
1. Before each use, check for proper drive clutch
operation by performing the following before start-
ing the engine:
With the drive clutch control released, push mower
forward. It should move freely. Pull mower
backward. It should move freely.
If it does not and the rear wheels tend to lock up,
the clutch may not be releasing completely. Do not
start the engine until corrections have been made.
WARNING: Never fill fuel tank indoors,
with engine running or until the engine has
14
Check the control cable for severe bend, kinks and
binding, or grass build-up in the pulley groove. Cor-
rect and adjust as required. Refer to adjustment
section for additional information.
2. Attach spark plug wire to spark plug. Make certain

TO START ENGINE AND ENGAGE BLADE
IMPORTANT: Move the shift lever only when the
engine is running. Shifting the speeds with the engine
off can cause damage to the unit. Disengage the drive
clutch control when shifting speeds.
WARNING: When starting the unit for the
A first time, place mower in first speed (slow)
position. Face the mower against a solid
object such as a wall, fence, etc. Start the
unit, and if it shows any signs of motion
with the drive clutch control disengaged,
shut the engine off immediately. Make cer-
tain the drive clutch control is adjusted so
the drive belt is as loose as possible. Refer
to the Adjustment Section.
1. Model 120898R: Move the throttle control lever to
CHOKE position. (A warm engine may not require
choking.)
Models 120897R and 120899R: Move the throt-
tle control lever to FAST or START position.
2. Models 120897R and 120899R: Prime engine as
instructed in the separate engine manual packed
with your unit.
. Standing behind the unit, depress the blade con-
trol handle and hold it against the upper handle.
Make certain drive clutch control handle is
released.
4. Grasp the recoil starter handle and pull back rapid-
ly, extending rope fully. Return it slowly to the rope
guide bolt.
5. After engine starts, move throttle control to FAST
or desired engine speed.
NOTE: /f any problems are encountered, refer to the
Trouble Shooting Guide on page 19.
WARNING: Never operate your unit
without either the side chute deflector or
entire rear discharge chute and grass
catcher assembly in place.
A
TO STOP ENGINE AND BLADE
1. Release the blade control handle to stop the
engine and blade.
e À
2. Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it
against the engine to prevent accidental starting
while equipment is unattended.
WARNING: The blade continues to rotate
for a few seconds after the engine is shut
off.
USING YOUR ROTARY MOWER
Be sure that lawn is clear of stones, sticks, wire, or other
objects which could damage lawn mower or engine.
Such objects could be accidently thrown by the mower
in any direction and cause serious personal injury to
the operator and others.
For the best results, do not cut wet grass because it
tends to stick to the underside of the mower, prevent-
ing proper discharge of grass clippings, and could
cause you to slip and fall. New grass, thick grass or
wet grass may require a narrower cut. Speed of the
mower should be adjusted to the condition of the lawn.
When using the side discharge mower, the best mow-
ing pattern is one that allows the clippings to discharge
towards the uncut part of the lawn. This permits re-
cutting of the clippings to further pulverize them. When
cutting high weeds, discharge towards cut portion, then
recut at right angles to first direction.
For best results, cut off one-third or less of the total
length of the grass. Lawn should be cut in the fall as
long as there is growth.
15
This mower is designed to be operated at full throttle
to give you the best cut and do the most effective job
of bagging the cut grass.
WARNING: If you strike a foreign object,
А stop the engine. Remove wire from spark
plug, thoroughly inspect the mower for
any damage, and repair the damage before
restarting and operating the mower. Exten-
sive vibration of the mower during opera-
tion is an indication of damage. The unit
should be promptly inspected and
repaired.
ADJUSTMENTS
WARNING: Do not at any time make any
adjustment to lawn mower without first
stopping engine and disconnecting spark
plug wire.
DRIVE CLUTCH CONTROL ADJUSTMENT
Use the adjustment wheel located on the underside of
the clutch control housing to tighten the drive belt if
mower does not self-propel with the drive clutch con-
trol engaged, or if drive belt is slipping (unit hesitates
while engine maintains the same speed). See figure 24.
In addition, the adjustment wheel may also be used to
determine the position in which the drive clutch con-
trol is engaged. If it is more comfortable to have the
drive engaged with the lever further away from the han-
die, tighten the drive belt.
Make certain to retest the unit for neutral as instructed
in the Operation Section. Move the adjustment wheel
in the opposite direction to loosen the drive belt if
necessary.

necessary. Remove the screw and cable clamp shown
in figure 5. Remove the cable from the clamp. Adjust
as instructed in step 4 of ‘Attaching the Throttle Con-
trol Cable” in Assembly Instructions.
SIX SPEED SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT
Periodic adjustment of the six speed shift cable may
be required due to normal stretch and wear on the
cable. Adjustment is needed if all six speeds cannot
be obtained.
The adjustable cable bracket is located on the left side
of the mower, beside the engine. To adjust, loosen the
hex nut which secures the adjustable cable bracket.
See figure 26. Pull backward on the bracket (toward
the rear of the mower). Retighten the hex nut. Test the
speeds on the mower (engine must be running).

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENTS
WARNING: If any adjustments are made to
the engine while the engine is running
(e.g. carburetor), keep clear of all moving
parts. Be careful of heated surfaces and
muffler.
Minor carburetor adjustment may be required to
compensate for differences in fuel, temperature,
altitude and load. Refer to the separate engine manual
packed with your mower for carburetor adjustment
information.
NOTE: A dirty air cleaner will cause an engine to run
rough. Be certain air cleaner is clean and attached to
the carburetor before adjusting carburetor.
LUBRICATION
WARNING: Always stop engine and
disconnect spark plug wire before clean-
ing, lubricating or doing any kind of work
on lawn mower.
Blade Control—Lubricate the pivot points on the blade
control handle and the brake cable at least once a
season with light oil. See figure 27. The blade control
must operate freely in both directions.
A
FIGURE 27.
Wheels—Lubricate the wheel bearings at least once
a season with light oil. Also, if the wheels are removed
for any reason, lubricate the surface of the axle bolt
and the inner surface of the wheel with light oil. A 4
oz. plastic bottie of light oil lubricant is available. Order
part number 737-0170. Engine oil may also be used.
Engine—Follow engine manual for lubrication in-
structions.
Throttle—Periodically lubricate throttle control lever
and throttle wire assembly with a few drops of light oil
for ease of operation.
Transmission—The transmission is pre-lubricated and
sealed at the factory. It does not require checking. If
disassembled for any reason, fill with 2 ounces of
Alvania grease, part number 737-0168.
MAINTENANCE
WARNING: Be sure to disconnect and
ground the spark plug wire before per-
forming any repairs or maintenance.
NOTE: When tipping the unit, empty the fuel tank and
keep engine spark plug side up.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
Refer to page 19 of this manual for trouble shooting
information.
CUTTING BLADE
When removing the cutting blade for sharpening or
replacement, protect hands by using heavy gloves or
a rag to grasp the cutting blade. Remove the bolt and
bell washer which hold the blade and adapter to the
engine crankshaft. Remove the blade and adapter from
the crankshaft.
If the blade or blade adapter needs replacing, remove
the two small bolts, lock washers and nuts which hold
the blade to the adapter.
A
WARNING: Periodically inspect the blade
adapter for cracks, especially if you strike
a foreign object. Replace when necessary.
When sharpening the blade, follow the original angle
of grind as a guide. It is extremely important that each
cutting edge receives an equal amount of grinding to
prevent an unbalanced blade. An unbalanced blade will
cause excessive vibration when rotating at high speeds,
may cause damage to the mower and could break,
causing personal injury.
It is recommended that the blade always be removed
from the adapter for the best test of balance. The blade
can be tested by balancing it on a round shaft
screwdriver. Remove metal from the heavy side until
it balances evenly.
Before reassembling the blade and the blade adapter
to the unit, lubricate the engine crankshaft and the inner
surface of the blade adapter with light oil. Lubricating
the bolt holes, bolts and inner surface of the nuts with
light oil is also recommended. A 4 oz. plastic bottle of
light oil lubricant is available. Order part number
737-0170. Engine oil may also be used.
When replacing the blade, be sure to install the blade
with the side of the blade marked “Bottom” (or with
part number) facing the ground when the mower is in
the operating position.
Blade Mounting Torque
Center Bolt and Blade Adapter Bolts: 375 in. Ib. min.,
450 in. Ib. max.
To insure safe operation of your unit, all nuts and bolts
must be checked periodically for correct tightness.
DECK
The underside of the mower deck should be cleaned
after each use to prevent a buildup of grass clippings,
leaves, dirt or other matter. If this debris is allowed to
accumulate, it will invite rust and corrosion, and may
cause an uneven discharge of grass clippings at the
next cutting.
17
The deck may be cleaned by tilting the mower and
scraping clean with a suitable tool (make certain the
spark plug wire is disconnected).
ENGINE
Refer to the separate engine manual for engine
maintenance instructions.
Maintain engine oil as instructed in the separate
engine manual packed with your unit. Read and follow
instructions carefully.
Service air cleaner every 25 hours under normal con-
ditions. Clean every few hours under extremely dusty
conditions. Poor engine performance and flooding
usually indicates that the air cleaner should be ser-
viced. To service the air cleaner, refer to the separate
engine manual packed with your unit.
The spark plug should be cleaned and the gap reset
once a season. Spark plug replacement is recom-
mended at the start of each mowing season; check
engine manual for correct plug type and gap
specifications.
Clean the engine regularly with a cloth or brush. Keep
the cooling system (blower housing area) clean to per-
mit proper air circulation which is essential to engine
performance and life. Be certain to remove all grass,
dirt and combustible debris from muffler area.
BELT REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT
1. Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it
against the engine.
2. Drain the fuel tank or place a piece of plastic
beneath the cap to prevent gasoline leakage.
3. Remove the grass bag, rear discharge chute
assembly and catcher panel.
4. Remove the transmission belt cover by removing
three bolts. See figure 28.

The purpose of warranty is to protect the customer from defects in workmanship and materials, defects which are NOT detected at the time
of manufacture. It does not provide for the unlimited and unrestricted replacement of parts. Use and maintenance are the responsibility of the
customer. The manufacturer cannot assume responsibility for conditions over which it has no control. Simply put, if it's the manufacturer's fault,
it's the manufacturer's responsibility; if it's the customer's fault, it's the customer's responsibility.

Frequently Answers and Questions

How do I adjust the cutting height?
The height adjustment handle is located on the left side of the deck. Push the handle to the left and then either forward to lower the cutting height or backward to raise the cutting height.
How do I change the speed of the mower?
The six speed shift lever is located on the drive clutch control housing on the upper handle. Release the drive clutch control when changing speeds. Important: Move the shift lever ONLY when the engine is running. Shifting the speeds with the engine off can cause damage to the unit.
How do I remove the blade for sharpening?
When removing the cutting blade for sharpening or replacement, protect hands by using heavy gloves or a rag to grasp the cutting blade. Remove the bolt and bell washer which hold the blade and adapter to the engine crankshaft. Remove the blade and adapter from the crankshaft.
