50” Cutting Deck Idler Hardware Upgrade for 2005 Model
Year Garden Tractor Units

Read through and understand these instructions completely before proceeding with repair.
PURPOSE: A spacer replaces the flat washer under the idler pulley to improve the belt path alignment.
NOTE: These materials are prepared for use by trained technicians who are experienced in the service and repair
of equipment of the kind described in this publication, and are not intended for use by untrained or inexperienced
individuals. Such individuals should seek the assistance of an authorized service technician or dealer.
NOTE: Save this Instruction Sheet. Refer to it when ordering replacement parts.

Installation Instructions:
1. Turn off engine, remove key from ignition switch and
allow engine and muffler to cool.

2.Disconnect the spark plug wire(s) from the spark
plug(s) and ground wire(s) to the engine block.

3. Lower cutting deck to lowest position.

4. Locate the 3/8” square hole in the idler bracket. See
Figure 2. Using a 3/8” drive breaker bar or long handle
ratchet in the 3/8” square hole, rotate idler bracket to
release tension in the belt and slip the belt off of the idler
pulley. CAUTION: Idler bracket is under a high spring
force.

5. Using a 9/16” box wrench and a 9/16” socket and
ratchet remove the idler pulley from the idler bracket.
Discard the bolt and the flat washer that is between the
idler pulley and idler bracket. Retain the idler pulley,
upper washer and hex flange lock nut for reinstallation
later.

6. Place the Spacer, Item 2, between the idler pulley
and the idler bracket. See Figure 2.

7. Using the new Hex Head Screw, Item 1, secure the
upper flat washer (retained in Step 5), idler pulley and
new spacer to the idler bracket with the hex flange lock
nut removed in Step 5. Tighten securely.
9. Check that the deck drive belt is properly routed
around blade spindle and idler pulleys. See Figure 2.
8. Remove and discard the old belt. Install the new deck
drive Belt, Item 3, using the 3/8” drive breaker bar or
long handle ratchet in the 3/8” square hole of the idler

10. Replace spark plug wire(s) onto the spark plug(s).
11. This completes deck belt tensioning idler hardware
update.
