CAUTION

Note to CATV system installers in the USA
This reminder is provided to call the CATV system installer's
attention to Article 820-40 of the NEC, which provides
guidelines for proper grounding, and, in particular, specifies that
the cable ground shall be connected to the grounding system of
the building, as close to the point of cable entry as practical.
Precautions
Installing your TV
* Place the TV on the floor or on a sturdy platform. The
mounting surface should be flat and steady. If you install the
TV on a soft floor, make sure that the floor is not damaged by
the weight of the TV.
* Place the TV far enough away from the walls to allow proper
ventilation. This will prevent the TV from overheating and
avoid possible damage to the TV. Avoid dusty places too.
* Damage may occur if you leave the TV in direct sunlight or
near a heater. Avoid places subject to extremely high
temperatures or humidity, and temperatures of 41°F(5°C) or
lower.
Using your TV
* Do not stand or climb on the TV.
* Do not put any heavy object on top of the TV.
* Do not place containers with liquids such as drinks or
cosmetics on the TV. If any foreign material or water leaks into
the TV, unplug the AC cord and contact your dealer.
* If the room temperature suddenly rises, condensation may
occur on the lenses resulting in picture distortion or color
fading. In such a case, simply wait a while (with the power on)
and the condensation will evaporate.
Avoid displaying stationary images on your TV screen for —
extended periods of time. Stationary patterns generated by a
picture-in-picture (PIP) display, Multi-Window display,
computer displays, video games, stock market reports, etc., can
become permanently engrained on the picture tube. This
damage is not protected by your warranty because it is the
result of misuse. If you wish to use your TV to display still
images, reduce brightness and contrast settings. Never leave a
PIP, Multi-Window, computer, or video game display
unattended.
Sit approximately 10-25 feet away from the TV. Sitting too far
to the left or right of the screen will cause the picture to appear
dull as will direct sunlight and room lights. Turn the TV oft to
check for reflections on the screen. Then remove the source of
any reflections while viewing.
Cleaning your TV
* Clean the TV with a soft dry cloth. Never use strong solvents
such as thinner or benzine which might damage the finish of
the cabinet. If the cabinet is very dirty. Use a damp cloth to
wipe the cabinet clean, then finish with a dry cloth.

Introduction
Welcome to Toshıba
Congratulations! You have purchased one of the finest projection
TV's on the market. The goal of this manual is to guide you through
serting up and operating your Toshiba TV as quickly as possible.
This manual applies to models TN50X81, TN55X81 and TN61X81.
Before you start reading, check your model number by looking at the
rear of the TV.
The TN50X81 is the model used for illustration purposes.
Instructions in this manual are based on using the remote control.
You can also use the controls on the TV if they have the same name as
those on the remote control.
Please read all the safety and operating instructions carefully, and
keep the manual for future reference.
Exploring your new TV
You can operate your TV by using the buttons on the front panel or
the remote control. The back panel and front panel (behind the door)
provide all the terminal connections you will need to connect other
equipment to your IV.

Connecting your TV
ANTENNA
Coaxial Cable
If you haven't connected electronic equipment before, or you have
been frustrated in the past, you may wish to read this section. (Cables
are not supplied. AUDIO

* A coaxial cable is the standard cable that comes in from your
antenna or cable converter box. Coaxial cables use “F”
connectors. Cable
* Audio and video cables are usually color coded according to use:

yellow for video and red and white for audio. The red audio cable S-VIDEO
is for the stereo right channel, and the white audio cable is for Cable
the stereo (or mono) left channel. If you look at the rear panel of © T>— —
the TV, you will see that the terminals are color coded in the Color Stream
same manner as the cables.
* S-video cables provide better picture performance. S-video cables Caution:
can only be used with S-video compatible components. Do not plug the TV in until you have finished
* ColorStream™ cables come in sets of three and provide the best connecting all of your equipment
picture performance. ColorStream cables can only be used with
ColorStream compatible components.
Connecting a VCR
This connection allows you to watch local channels and video
programs, play or record on the VCR while watching TV, and to
record from one channel while watching another channel.
You will need:
* one coaxial cable
* one pair of audio cables (only one cable for a mono VCR)
* one video cable

Caution:
If using a mono VCR, connect L/Mono to
VCR Audio OUT using only one audio cable.
If you have a S-VHS VCR, use the S-video
connections and remove the video cable.

Connecting a cable converter box
This connection allows you to watch cable and premium channels.
You should keep your TV selected to ANT-1 so that you can use the
TV features. When viewing premium channels, select AN 1-2 and
tune the TV to channel 3 or 4 (whichever channel is vacant in your
area), then use the converter box to change channels.
You will need two coaxial cables.

Note:
When you use a converter box with your TV,
there may be features that you can not
program using the remote control, such as
programming your favorite channels, labeling
channels, and blocking channels.
Connecting a cable converter box and a VCR
This connection allows you to watch and record basic and premium
cable channels, as well as watch videotapes. You should keep your TV
selected to ANT-1 so that you can use the TV's features. When
viewing premium channels or recording with the VCR, select AN T-2
and change the TV channel to 3 or 4 (whichever channel 1s vacant in
your area), then use the converter box to change channels.
You will need:
* three coaxial cables
* one pair of audio cables (only one cable for a mono VCR)
* one video cable

Caution:
If you want to record one channel while
watching another channel, a splitter (not
included) must be added between the cable
and ANT-1. One output of the splitter goes to
ANT-1 and the second output is connected to
IN on the cable converter box.
If you have a mono VCR, connect L/Mono to
VCR Audio OUT using only one audio cable.
If you have a S-VHS VCR, use the S-video
connections and remove the video cable. Do
not connect the video cable and the S-video
cable to Video-1 simultaneously.
When you use a converter box with your TV,
there may be features that you can not

Connecting a DVD/satellite receiver and a VCR
This connection allows you to watch DVD/satellite, video and TV
programs. You can record one TV channel while watching another

Caution:
You can use a video cable instead of the
S-video cable, but the picture quality will
decrease. If you use a S-video cable between
the TV and DVD/satellite receiver, make the
audio connections only and remove the video
connection.
Do not connect the video cable and the
S-video cable to Video-1 simultaneously.

Connecting a DVD with ColorStream™ and a
VCR
This connection allows you to watch DVD, video or TV programs
and to record DVD or TV programs. You can record from one source
and watch a program from another source. Your TV is capable of
using ColorStream (component video). Connecting your TV to a
ColorStream compatible DVD, such as a Toshiba DVD, can greatly
enhance picture quality and performance.
You will need:
* one coaxial cable

* one set of ColorStream video cables

Connecting a DTV receiver (or Set Top Box)
and a VCR
This connection allows you to watch digital broadcasts, video or TV
programs and to record DTV or TV programs. You can record from
one source and watch a program from another source. Connecting
your TV to a ColorStream (component video) compatible DTV
receiver can greatly enhance picture quality and performance.
You will need:
* one coaxial cable
* three pairs of audio cables (only one cable for a mono VCR)
* two video cables
* one set of ColorStream video cable

Caution:
To play from the DVD, the DVD and TV must
use ColorStream connections, To record from
the DVD, the DVD and TV must select Video.
To monitor recording from the DVD, the VCR
must select Line IN, and the TV must select
Video-1.

Note:
You can use either the ColorStream HD) 1 or
HD 2 inputs for connecting the DVD or DTV.
However, you will need the mode selection in
the PREFERENCE menu. See “Selecting the
ColorStream mode * on page 36.
The ColorStream HD 1 and HD 2 jacks are
available for both Progressive (480p) and
Interface (4801, 10801) scan systems.
Caution:
To watch DTV. the DTV receiver and TV must
use ColorStream connections. To record from
the DTV the DTV receiver and TV must select
Video.

Connecting two VCRs
This connection allows you to record (dub/ edit) from one VCR to
another VCR while watching a video program. You will also be able
to record from one TV channel while watching another channel.
You will need:
* one coaxial cable
* two pairs of audio cables (only two cables for mono VCRs)

Connecting an audio system
This connection allows you to use an audio amplifier to adjust the
audio level. This also allows you to use external speakers.
To control the audio, turn on the TV and the stereo amplifier, then
turn off the built-in speakers. (See Turning off the built-in speakers”
on page 41.)
You will need one pair of audio cables.

Connecting an A/V receiver
If you use a system that delivers Dolby Pro Logic* surround sound,
you will probably want to use the TV speakers as center channel
speakers.
A center channel speaker adds to the realism of a surround sound
system such as Dolby Pro Logic.
You will need:

* one video cable
* one audio cable for audio center channel

Caution:
Make sure the TV is turned off before
connecting or disconnecting an audio cable to
the Audio Center Channel IN jack.
The speaker may be damaged.
Note:
Refer to the instructions furnished with the
connected A/V receiver for detailed surround
system.
When the Audio Center Channel ON/OFF
switch is in the ON position, the TV speakers
will function only as the center channel
speakers.
Adjust the volume for center channel
speakers with the center level control on the
A/V receiver.
If you use the TV speakers as normal
speakers, set the Audio Center Channel

Using the remote control
Preparing the remote control for use
With the remote control, you can operate your TV, most VCR
models, and cable TV converters together, even if they are different
brands. If you will be using your TV with a Toshiba VCR, your
remote control is already programmed and ready to use.
* If you own different brands of VCRs and/or converters, you first
have to program your remote control. (See “Programming the
remote control for use with a VCR or a cable TV converter” on
page 13.)
* Also, this remote control is capable of learning operating codes
from most infrared remote control transmitters. (See “Learning
operating code of another remote controller” on page 16.)
Installing the remote control batteries
To install the batteries:
1. Slide the battery cover off of the back of the remote control.

2. Install two “AA” size alkaline batteries. Match the + and - signs
on the batteries to the signs on the battery compartment.
3. Slide the battery cover back on to the remote control until the
lock snaps.
Using the remote control with a VCR or a cable
TV converter
To control a Toshiba VCR:
Set the TV/CABLE/VCR/AUX switch to the VCR position. The
buttons shown to the right will then control the VCR. The rest
of the buttons will operate the TV as usual.
If you own different brands of VCRs, program the remote
control to recognize the brand of your VCR. (See “Programming
the remote control for use with a VCR or a cable TV converter”
on page 13.)

Note:
This remote control's functions may or may
not operate your VCR or cable TV converter.
Refer to the owner's manuals supplied with
the equipment to see which features are
available. In addition, the original controllers
may have features not available on this remote
control. If you would like to continue to use
these features, you May want to use the
original remote control.

To control a cable TV converter:
Program the remote control to recognize the brand of your
converter. The shaded buttons will control the cable TV
converter.
Set the TV/CABLE/VCR/AUX switch to the CABLE position.

Learning operating code of another remote
controller
This remote control is capable of learning operating codes from most
infrared remote controllers. You can control the functions of your TV
and a variety of video/audio equipment with the supplied remote
control only.
The 21 buttons marked with @ can be used as the Learning buttons.
1. Set the TV/CABLE/VCR/AUX switch to “AUX” position.
2. Place the supplied remote control and the remote controller to be
learned, head to head approximately 1 to 3 inches (3 to 8 cm)
apart.

When you press a button other than a Learning button, the
indicator will blink. (The button you pressed is not a Learning
button.)
5. Hold down the button of the function to be learned on the other
remote controller for about 3 seconds until the learning indicator
starts blinking. ———— —]
Note: If the learning indicator blinks rapidly, the supplied remote control
cannot learn the operating code or an error has occurred.
Try steps 4 and 5 again.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for storing other functions into other
buttons.
7. Press EXIT to release the learning mode.
8. To check your programming, operate the appropriate equipment
with the supplied remote control. If the equipment does not
operate as expected, repeat steps 1 to 7.
If necessary, try changing the distance between the two remote
controllers.
9. Reset the TV/CABLE/VCR/AUX switch to “TV” position to
control the TV.

After you've installed the batteries and programmed the remote
control, you need to set some preferences on the TV using the menu.
You can access the menu with the buttons on your TV or by using
the remote control.

Changing the on-screen display language
You can choose from three different languages (English, French and
Spanish) for the on-screen displays. Adjustment menus and messages
will appear in the language of your choice.

antenna input (ANT 1 or ANT 2).

Using the ANT/ VIDEO button
You can monitor or change the signal source that is connected to the
TV. By pressing the ANT/VIDEO button on your TV, you can select

ColorStream HD 2, ANT 2 or ANT 1 mode. The signal source you
are currently connected to will be displayed in purple.
To select the antenna input:

Setting up
Adding channels to the TV’s memory
Your TV will stop on specific channels that are stored in the TV's
channel memory when you press Channel À or W. Use the steps
below to set all active channels in your area automatically.
Programming channels automatically
Your TV can automatically detect all active channels and store them
in its memory. After the TV has stored the channels in its memory,
you can erase channels or add your favorite channels. If you use both
ANT-1 and ANT-2 terminals, you must program channels for each
Input source.
To add channels:
1. Press MENU, then press €or P until the SET UP menu JA

Adding and erasing channels manually
After you've programmed the channels, you can add or erase specific
channels.
To add or erase channels:
1. Select the channel you want to add or erase using Channel A or
V. If adding channels, you must select the channel to add by
using the Channel Number buttons.
2. Press MENU, then press € or > until the SET UP menu
appears.
3. Press Y or A to highlight ADD/ERASE.

Changing channels
To change the channel, you can:
* change the programmed channels using the remote control
e select a channel directly using the remote control
* scan the channels using the TV buttons
To change to the next programmed channel:
Press Channel A or ¥ on the TV or remote control.
To change to a specific channel (programmed or unprogrammed):
Press the Channel Number buttons (0-9 and 100).
For example, to select channel 125, press the 100 button, the 2
button, and the 5 button.
Adjusting the color convergence
This projection TV uses three separate TV tubes: a red one, a green
one, and a blue one. The red, green, and blue images are projected
onto the screen where they converge to form a full color picture. You
can see a clear picture only when they converge correctly. Conver-
gence may drift over time or if you move the TV. If you can see clear
images on the screen, skip this procedure.
This adjustment should be made after the TV has been on for at least
30 minutes.
To check and adjust the color convergence:
1. Press MENU, then press € or > until the PICTURE menu
appears.
2. Press À or ¥ to highlight CONVERGENCE.
3. Press dor P to display the center CONVERGENCE menu.

Adjusting the channel settings
Switching between two channels
You can switch between two channels without entering an actual
channel number each time.
To switch berween two channels:
1. Select the first channel you want to view.
2. Select a second channel with the Channel Number buttons (0-9,
100).
3. Press CH RTN. The previous channel will be displayed.
Each time you press CH RTN, the TV will switch back and forth
between the two channels.
Programming your favorite channels
You can preset up to 9 of your favorite channels each for FAVORITE
1 and FAVORITE 2 modes using the Favorite Channel Programming
feature. Because this feature scans through only your favorite channels,
it allows you to skip other channels you do not normally watch.
You can still use Channel 4 Y to scan through all the channels you
programmed in the TV's memory.
To program your favorite channels:
1. Press MENU, then press € or > until the SET UP menu appears.
2. Press A or Y to highlight FAVORITE CH1 or FAVORITE CH2.

Watching picture-in-picture (PIP)
The picture-in-picture (PIP) feature allows you to watch two pictures ——

Using V-CHIP control
Some TV programs and movies include signals that classify the
content of the program (violence, sex, dialog, language). The V-CHIP
control feature in this TV detects the signals and blocks the programs
according to your selections. To use this feature, perform the follow-
ing setup.

Setting the off-timer
You can set the TV so it turns off automatically.
To set the off-timer:
1. Press TIMER once to select the OFF TIMER.
2. Press two Number buttons (0-9) to enter how long you want the
TV to remain on (up to three hours, in 10 minute increments).
Enter the numbers after the number position starts to blink.

Adjusting the sound
Muting the sound
Press MUTE to temporarily turn off the sound. While the sound is
off, the screen will display the word MUTE in the lower right-hand
corner. To restore the sound, press MUTE again.
When you press the MUTE button, you automatically activate the
closed caption feature. To deactivate this feature, press the MUTE
button again. This feature only works when the closed caption mode
is set to off. See “Using the closed caption feature” on page 37 for
more information.
Selecting stereo/SAP broadcasts
You can enjoy watching TV while you listen to high-fidelity stereo
sound with the Multi-channel TV Sound (MTS) feature. MTS can
also transmit a second audio program (SAP) containing a second
language or other audio information.
When the TV receives a stereo or SAP broadcast, the word STEREO
or SAP appears on the screen when the TV is turned on, you change
the channel, or press the RECALL button.
The MTS feature is not available while in the VIDEO mode.
To listen to stereo sound:
I. Press MENU, then press €or P until the AUDIO menu
appears.

Viewing the demonstration mode
When you press DEMO on the TV, the TV will automatically display
a variety of its on-screen menus and special features. This function is
provided for demonstration purposes only.

demonstrate.
To stop the demonstration mode:
Press DEMO again or press Exit or Recall on the remote.
Auto power off
The TV will automatically turn itself off after approximately 15
minutes if it is tuned to a vacant channel or if a station completes its
broadcast for the day and stops broadcasting on that channel. This
feature, however, does not work in the VIDEO mode.
Understanding the last mode memory feature
If the power is cut off while you are viewing the TV and the power 1s
resupplied, the last mode memory feature will turn the TV on
automatically.
If the power is going to be off for a long time or you are going to be
away from home for a long time, remove the power plug from the
wall outlet to prevent the TV from turning on in your absence.

Limited United States Warranty
Toshiba America Consumer Products, Inc. (CTACP”) and Toshiba Hawaii Inc. € TH1) make the following limited warranties. These limited
warranties extend to the original consumer purchaser or any person receiving this set as a gift from the original consumer purchaser and to no other
purchaser or transferee.
Limited One (1) Year Warranty
TACP and THI warrant this product and its parts against defects in
materials or workmanship for a period of one (1) year after the date of
original retail purchase. During this period, TACP and THI will repair
or replace a defective part, at their option, with a new or refurbished
part, without charge to you. TACP/THI Authorized Service Station
personnel will come to your home when warranty service is required.
Depending on the type of repair required, che service will either be
performed in your home or the set will be taken to the TACP/THI
authorized service station for repair and returned to your home at no
COSE TO you.
Owner’s Manual and Demographic Card
You should read this owners manual thoroughly before operating this
product. You should complete and mail the enclosed Demographic card
within ten days after you., or the person who has given you this product
as a gift, purchased this product. This 15 one way to enable TAC?P/THI
to provide you with berrer customer service and improved products.
Failure to return the Demographic card will not affect your rights under
